saw this on Saturday and I was entertained. I wish there had been some further explanation about Nero vs the Klingons and more info on the red matter, unless that is some trek thing that went over my head. Looking forward to more of these.

^wow, someone who actually cares about meaningless technobabble filler
5/17/2009 11:34:12 PM
star trek has a strong "treknology" that I enjoy...
5/17/2009 11:47:27 PM
^^^ Read the comic that came out before the movie. It explains basically everything, from the red matter, to how Nero's ship got so damn powerful.

^ I had not considered that Kirk would also be emotionally compromised. Good point. But, then again, Kirk did not lose his entire home world and had a few decades to work out his issues. I'm sure he would have a emotional grudge against Nero, but that could almost be said of anyone that wanted to stop Nero because he was attacking their "home" planet. Feeling something about your mission isn't the same as having your judgement clouded by emotion. But then again, Spock actually wasn't doing anything "crazy". Indeed, it was Kirk that insisted they break their original mission and follow Nero to save earth and Capt Pike.I talked myself out of and back into your position. I don't think the motivation was as solid as it could ahve been.
5/18/2009 10:13:55 AM
Kirk doesn't care if emotions cloud his judgement and probably sees them as helping rather than hurting. Spock, on the otherhand, is a vulcan. Any kind of emotion is bad. That said, it still was a pretty weak way to get kirk into the chair.
5/18/2009 10:31:08 AM
it was kirk's fate to be captain.

^ I thought their orders to rendevue with the other ships in some quandrant or another if things went wrong. Wasn't that what Spock was going? Its been a while since I saw the movie.
5/18/2009 12:24:31 PM
I thought they were to recover Pike and stop the Romulans but maybe you're right now that you mention it I can't remember it well enough to say that with 100% confidence... I still think the marooning a fellow officer is the real off the rails moment either way. Also this just came up on Digg, and I think raises a good point:http://io9.com/5255881/what-is-jj-abrams-trying-to-tell-us

Daniel Day Lewis as a Khan would make it the most beast ass sci fi villain on screen ever.
5/18/2009 1:50:06 PM
^That would be pretty awesome. I could see lots of stupid internet fads rising from it though... "I DRINK YOUR ROMULAN ALE!"

Kahn would have to be charismatic (he led armies and almost conquered the world after all), but still sinister.A young Orson Welles basically nailed that type of role in Citizen Kane. But since he's dead Daniel Day Lewis came the closest in my mind to being the next best option.Given that DDL probably won't do it...Lawrence Fishburne would be my #3 choice. He can do confident leader and sinister villain pretty well. Plus he has no qualms of staring a sci-fi movie.#4 would be Kenneth Branagh. He actually starred with Fishburne in an adaptation of Othello as Iago so you know he can do sinister really well. And his performance in Hamlet shows that he can put on an aristocratic swagger that would suite Kahn well. But I dunno. I have a fear he come off as a puff. *shrug* Still better than anyone else I could thing of (aside from those previously mentioned of course).[Edited on May 18, 2009 at 3:00 PM. Reason : ``]
5/18/2009 2:52:40 PM
Kenneth Branagh would also be a good choice but he'd definitely lack the sheer force that Lewis can muster. Of course, lewis wouldn't happen either since he does one movie every five years basically. Lawrence Fisbhorne is too cool of a customer for Kahn. What do you guys think about Gary Oldman? He's played psychotic villains quite well before.
5/18/2009 3:18:06 PM
Gary Oldman could do it. Gary Oldman can do anything.
5/18/2009 3:19:01 PM
I second the nomination for Gary Oldman. And by the 4th sequal when they're ready to introduce Data, my vote is for Justin Long (he's already played a computer so he has the experience...plus his career started with Galaxy Quest so he knows cheesy sci-fi).
5/18/2009 3:25:16 PM
i kinda have the urge to see the final battle from undiscovered country but can't find a link. the part where spock and bones trick out that torpedo to find the cloaked bird of prey
5/18/2009 3:28:23 PM
I don't know. Gary Oldman doesn't strike me as someone that could play "a leader of men" in the sense I imagine Kahn would be. *shrug* He does play villians pretty well and maybe they could take the character in another direction. Maybe like make Kahn more of a Guerrilla than a General? That could work and be cool.PS* SandSanta, in retrospect I think you're right about Fishburne. Too cool to be Kahn. Wrath of Kaun is so full of plot holes its sick - no clue why this movie makes everyone hard.
5/18/2009 9:57:49 PM
Is there any websites streaming Wrath of Kahn in English? I only found it in Korean.
5/18/2009 10:22:00 PM
I predict that this director will not make memorable villains.

the gun was already there on the platform
5/19/2009 5:35:26 AM
what are they going to have as the plot for wrath of kahn though? they've already established that they can do pretty much whatever they want canon wise...
5/19/2009 3:23:00 PM
I was wondering about that. I guess they could revisit the TOS episode and make a feature length version of "Space Seed".YES I KNOW THE NAME OF THE EPISODE.
5/19/2009 3:25:28 PM
^ that was what I was thinking they would do, which could be pretty cool. But I wonder if there would be enough material there to go feature length. Knowing Abrams, he will probably want to make the story "more complex" by adding some or other subplot on top of it anyways, so I guess it will be fine.Of course, if they were revisiting star trek episodes, I think "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (the first episode of the series) is a gold mine for going to feature length. Mystery (what happened to the lost ship, Valient) and the fact that crew members accuire God like powers as the result of something or other (I cant rember details). That would probably be up Abram's alley too. He could delve into issues like what it would mean for a man to have god-like powers and how it is we concieve of God anyways and his role in our lives. [Edited on May 19, 2009 at 4:36 PM. Would they really try to sell new fans on the concept of a Eugenics War at the end of the 20th century?

WHO'S GOING TO 10PM IMAX
5/19/2009 7:26:16 PM
^^you don't remember that shit?
5/19/2009 7:28:13 PM
Of course, but they'd have to add a decent amount of backstory for the new fans that they're trying to appeal to.
5/19/2009 7:31:35 PM
i mean, i remember the eugenics war like it was yesterday... I was still in high school when we finally chased them off planet in their sleeper ships.
5/19/2009 7:55:47 PM
I still question the logic of chasing them off in sleeper ships. It seems like they could resurface one day in the future and cause trouble. Oh well. Not my problem.
5/19/2009 8:17:30 PM
well, from what i remember, we didn't necessarily want them to go away in sleeper ships... it was kindof an escape, but they were gone from earth, so we partied like it was 1999.
5/19/2009 8:23:36 PM
well -- i was just concerned that some alien intelligence one day would find a sleeper ship and graft the supermens genes into their own.... perhaps at the expense of one of their most notable facial features....
5/19/2009 9:17:56 PM
I'd be more concerned about alien intelligence giving our old space probes sentience.Or coming to investigate extinct whales.
