I would too, but he's definitely coming back as a reliever. No idea how long he'll stay there, though.
5/22/2008 2:46:47 PM
Smoltz is coming back as a reliever regardless of what anyone else says or wants, including Bobby Cox. I guess working as a reliever will lessen the stress on his shoulder although I'm not sure how. Also
5/22/2008 5:19:54 PM
According to ESPN, Hampton is due $20mil next year!
5/22/2008 10:07:53 PM
It's a team option (that will be declined).
5/22/2008 10:14:03 PM
he'll probably go to the marlins or dbacks and win 25 games, while making 1 mil/year
5/22/2008 10:15:35 PM
Smoltz' problem isn't about pitching....its about pitching multiple innings in a row. Smoltz could go 5 innings, but that would be it. Thats what he has done all season so far. He would go 5 innings, and his shoulder would knot up. So he is thinking that by coming back to the bullpen, and at max throwing 2 innings in a game, it won't knot up on him
5/23/2008 12:35:26 PM
^ hopefully that idea will work out and he won't destroy his shoulder pitching/warming up in multiple games in a row.Anyway great last week for the Braves, 2 out of 3 from the A's and four straight vs. the Mets. Sure played both of those teams at the right time. Wish this team knew how to play on the road. If we just had a 500 record on the road, we'd be sitting pretty. This weekend's series against the D-backs is going to be tough, but atleast we will miss Webb although Micah Owings will probably hit 4 Hrs against us and pitch a shutout like he did last year.
5/23/2008 12:51:33 PM
ugh.. what an ass whooping
5/23/2008 11:46:48 PM
jo jo got roooocked
5/23/2008 11:48:20 PM
Exactly why I said:
5/24/2008 2:28:07 AM
For all those knocking Reyes, who would you rather replace him? And no, Smoltz is not an option. Right now, as bad as it sounds, other than Smoltz, Reyes is our best option for a starter, and yes, it is as bad as it sounds....and looks.I mean some of you are just acting like the Braves have some miracle arm in the minors who could jump right in and instantly start over Reyes or some others in the SR. The fact is, we have shit in the farm system as far as pitching right now that is ready to move up and the best we have that is ready is already starting. [Edited on May 24, 2008 at 2:33 AM. Reason : .]
5/24/2008 2:30:45 AM
I'd go with Smoltz.. Why is he not an option? Throw every 5th day, it's not that hard.Yeah, I know he still has to throw on the 3rd and 4th day. There is no reason being a starter should be harder on your arm than a reliever. Relievers throw before games, then during games maybe multiple times, and then in games if they get into the game that day. Starters are on a much more regimented program, there's no way being a reliever should be easier on your arm than a starterWho's in the starting rotation? Hudson, Glavine, Jurrjens, Reyes, Campillo? I mean I know it's not very pretty right now, and that they were counting on Smoltz/Hampton being a starter, but I always thought Reyes would be like the 6th or 7th guy we should turn to. I didn't realize Buddy Carlyle was hurt, so that's a minor blow to a could be replacement, and obviously Hampton's a lost cause. But Smoltz needs to stop thinking about the bullpen and worry about his stamina unless he simply cannot do it, in which case I would say Bennett, Reyes, James, or maybe even Charlie Morton need to fill in as a 5th starter/spot starter[Edited on May 24, 2008 at 3:00 AM. Reason : last paragraph, and yeah, woo 500]
5/24/2008 2:48:11 AM
No one is knocking Reyes, he just got rocked tonight. And by "best option for a starter", I'll assume you meant "fourth best option for a starter", which is exactly what everyone expected Reyes to be: the number four or five guy. Reyes isn't pitching badly (besides this was only his fifth appearance), but Hudson, Jurrjens, and Glavine are all pitching better. Plus there's Campillo (still an unproven commodity with just one start), who's pitching lights out; he should get more starts if Smoltz stays in the pen. We don't have anyone in the minors ready to go right now. Tommy Hanson could be by the end of the summer and Cole Rohrbough just got healthy, so he's a ways off.But we don't need them. We lead the league in ERA and hits allowed and we're in the top five in walks and strikeouts. You're still an idiot, MacGyver.
5/24/2008 2:55:25 AM
BJ, you don't get it. Smoltz said at max all he could do was 5 innings during his starts, and he doesn't want that because he feels that would be doing more harm than help. So he is goin to the pen where he should be able to help shut some teams down at the end of games. Possibly having Soriano, Gonzalez and smoltz at the end of your bullpen.......thats nice to know
5/24/2008 3:04:16 AM
I didn't know that. He still went 5, 6, and 7 in most of his starts this year. Which is better than reyes giving up 7 in those 4 or 5. I still question Smoltz, he is much too competitive to worry about his arm hurting, and will try to go out and throw a lot to prove he is more ready than he is. I wish he could just calm it down a little, but then I guess he wouldn't be John Smoltz. Anyways, if he's unable to be a starter again, I'd still say they can find a solid #4 and #5 out of the remaining people. Smoltz would make their bullpen pretty untouchable (if they all get healthy) so finding somebody out of James, Reyes, Hampton, Bennett, Carlyle, and Campillo to throw 5 or 6 innings shouldn't be out of the question[Edited on May 24, 2008 at 3:14 AM. In Smoltz's rehab game last night. He pitched one inning, giving up one hit....to Matt Camp.

More back spasms for Chipper

not every chance I get[Edited on May 27, 2008 at 3:05 PM. Reason : I don't see what the risk of not knowing someone is on a bet that won't be paid for 4 months anyway]
5/27/2008 3:02:40 PM
What happened to the offer of 3/2 odds?
5/27/2008 3:08:31 PM
I reconsidered and thought better of it
5/27/2008 3:11:52 PM
^^^ what? what does that matter? unless you assume we will "get to know each other" over that four months
5/27/2008 3:29:36 PM
make it a thousand thenboth us us send the money to a neutral 3rd party and he/she pays the winner the full balance at the conclusion of the season
5/27/2008 3:38:08 PM
I would not bet $1000 on the collective outcome of approximately 110 games spread out over 4 months... a $100 is doable, which is why I offered to bet NyM410 that amount
5/27/2008 3:40:59 PM
I am a neutral party. Please send me $2000.
5/27/2008 3:41:34 PM
I'll take 5:1 odds the marlins win the division
5/27/2008 4:47:58 PM
Seriously? Cause I'd be all over that.--durr I thought you said 3:1. I'd still consider 5:1.[Edited on May 27, 2008 at 5:42 PM. Reason : ]
5/27/2008 5:41:30 PM
Haha I would consider it. Wish I could have at least a week to make that decision but that would be unfair. I'd like to see how they play in their next two series.
5/27/2008 6:32:01 PM
Dammit, the Mets beat the Marlins and Jeff Bennett catches bullpenitis.
5/27/2008 10:50:04 PM
Diaz to the DL, but who needs him anyways, and Soriano's back.
5/28/2008 3:38:44 PM
Fat Guy update:133 AB, .165/.273/.271, 2 HR, 7 RBI
5/28/2008 3:52:32 PM
its outings like that one by JO JO Reyes that makes me believe he can be a solid starter in our rotation
5/28/2008 10:08:32 PM
0-0 in the 8th, Reyes has allowed just two hits... I know, let's put in Boyer!Sometime I hate you, Bobby Cox.
5/28/2008 10:10:06 PM
a weekes triple puts the brew crew up 1-0fuck life as a braves fan this year. I swear....it feels like you're playing a video game and you KNOW the motherfucking thing is cheating you, but you keep playing it hoping that you'll finally beat it
5/28/2008 10:14:47 PM
that's funny. I mean your closer is available, and your former closer is available, in a 0-0 game, in the 8th. Oh, fuck that, lets throw some dickhead who's given up clusters of runs many times already this season. I guess Boyer gives good head.
5/28/2008 10:18:27 PM
and our road woes continue. Fuckin horrible. 3 hit a team and get the L. wtf
