^^^ Yeah, so that you could use an app that outputs sound to output through your computer speakers. For example, I have the This American Life app, which (if I want to listen to at work) I would have to disconnect the speakers from my computer and hook them to my phone.

Just out of curiousity, people that have been using their jailbroken iphones with tethering, have you had any issues with ATT? Or any really crazy increase in your data usage that might tip them off?
5/2/2010 9:01:18 PM
really wish i could jailbreak mine just to tether occasionally. when i bought my 3gs the firmware on it was already too new to be able to jailbreak though
5/2/2010 9:05:45 PM
^^never had any issues. There's the unofficial whatever 4-5 gig cap per month and i think they bother you if you go over that but nothing else. ^yeah my replacement phone has 3.1.3 on it and can't be jailbroken. I hate not having backgrounder, and i just noticed how shitty the youtube videos look on 3g without 3g un-restrictor. They're all pixelated and look like trash. I miss having the wifi quality youtube videos anywhere. I'm almost too embarrassed to use youtube on 3g because it looks so bad.
5/2/2010 9:11:07 PM
i really just want sbsettings and tethering once every few months.. gahand yea youtube looks awful.. i didnt know about that unrestrictor but i'll def use it whenver i get to jailbreak again[Edited on May 2, 2010 at 9:15 PM. Reason : asf]
5/2/2010 9:14:38 PM
^yeah it just tricks all the apps into thinking they're on wifi instead of 3g. So you can download larger than 10MB apps in app store, skype works (think it does on 3g now anyway), youtube is same quality, etc. I use backgrounder daily for pandora and games. sbsettings too. tethering all the time.
5/2/2010 9:17:24 PM
Does help.benm.at not still work on 3.1.3 to allow tethering without a jailbreak? I know it worked up to 3.1.2 with no issues.]
5/2/2010 10:33:31 PM
or you could just jailbreak your new 3.1.3 iPhone. http://chronic-dev.org/blog/2010/05/boom/
5/2/2010 10:52:31 PM
^anyone tried that yet? About to.-holy shit that was easy. JAILBROKEN ONCE AGAIN!!!![Edited on May 3, 2010 at 6:24 AM. Reason : g]
5/3/2010 5:59:04 AM
I'll be trying it later today on my iPad. Assuming I can find one. They're not sold out, are they? Guess I'll find out later.]
5/3/2010 6:28:14 AM
^^does that work for 3gs too?!?!
5/3/2010 6:33:46 AM
^^ I thought you already had an iPad?
5/3/2010 6:41:16 AM
5/3/2010 6:42:42 AM
Fuck yeah. Jailbreakng when I get to work!
5/3/2010 6:51:40 AM
w00tit worked
5/3/2010 8:27:04 AM
what themes/lock screen apps do you guys use? Found a cool OS4 theme.
5/3/2010 8:29:27 AM
that was far and away the easiest jailbreak I have ever used. Took about 40 seconds to do my 3.1.3 3Gs iphone.Debating on doing it to the iPad.
5/3/2010 8:54:51 AM
yea that one and blackra1n or whatever it was called were stupid easy..
5/3/2010 9:00:48 AM
dumb question: once you jailbreak, can you go back to the regular apple software if you don't like it?
5/3/2010 9:32:47 AM
yabut there's not really anything to "not like"[Edited on May 3, 2010 at 9:33 AM. Reason : as in it's exactly the same until you start installing apps that apple doesn't allow...]
5/3/2010 9:33:31 AM
^^yeah it doesn't actually change anything until you start adding new apps. WARNING!!!!!Using the spirit jailbreak will delete your photo roll. i just found that out the hard way. I'm wondering if iTunes backs up your photo roll somewhere i can find it that spirit didn't delete.-going to try restoring from an earlier backup hoping my photo roll was backed up then jailbreaking again and copying photos over. still doesn't solve the not being able to see the photos on your computer from the blog roll or being able to sync photos. seems like the jailbreak is nuked because of this. [Edited on May 3, 2010 at 10:00 AM. Reason : s]
5/3/2010 9:45:52 AM
damn that sucks. i had some funny pics from Friday night on there that got deleted
5/3/2010 10:13:16 AM
yeah seriously. try taking some pics then trying to get to them in windows. can't do it. someone mentioned photo syncing might be broken too. weird.
5/3/2010 10:15:14 AM
Why on earth would the jailbreak delete your photos?
5/3/2010 10:18:07 AM
^ don't know sucks though. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=909234--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DO A BACK UP BEFORE USING SPIRIT. After the back up jailbreak using spirit. Your photos are gone and you can't access your photo roll through usb via computer. Go back and restore using backup and your photos show back up and it fixes the camera roll issue while keeping your jailbreak. Figured that out just now. Don't think anyone's posted that on the web yet. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Edited on May 3, 2010 at 10:41 AM. Reason : s]

^no you completely misunderstand what the jailbreak does. Ok lets say you jailbreak your iPhone. Initially the ONLY thing it changes is it adds the Cydia (jailbreak app store) app to your phone. Everything else stays the same, photos, music, apps, etc. You can still use iTunes, jailbreaking ADDS functionality to your iPhone, it doesn't take anything away. It doesn't completely restore the entire phone or anything. It essentially just adds one icon. You can jailbreak your phone and the only difference would be the Cydia app. Other than that no one would know you jail broke your phone unless you started skinning it or changing the appearance. You should try it. There's really nothing to lose. Although if you do have a 3gs with the newer baseband and 3.1.3 follow my directions and do a backup, jailbreak, then restore from backup and you won't lose your photo roll photos.
5/3/2010 11:26:11 AM
yup.. it just installs the cydia app. then that app lets you install apps that apple has not approved via an interface that isn't too different than the app store you're used to. these apps obviously have functionality that apple won't allow in their "approved" apps.you lose nothing(well, except some pictures apparently lol)[Edited on May 3, 2010 at 1:23 PM. 5/3/2010 1:21:48 PM
ohhhhhhhh. although i had never really even looked into it, i had been thinking that you're reformatting with some random OS or something...yeah i had no idea thank you for the explanation
5/3/2010 2:25:54 PM
so you still can buy apps from the app store AND from cydia...
5/3/2010 2:29:24 PM
haha yeah. Cydia has paid apps just like the app store. some of which are very useful. most of them are free though. ^^yeah it's not reformatting or anything. everything stays the same except for the addition of the cydia app. right now my jailbreak app list:five icon docksbsettingsboss paper/winterboard3g unrestrictorpdanet (tethering) + pdanet sbsettings pluginMIM (can change the network name to whatever you want)backgrounder (multitasking)nes/snes/n64/gba emulators. some of them even support the use of a wiimote over BT now.
5/3/2010 2:36:09 PM
so i decided to try jailbreaking and its pretty sweet, however my wifi doesn't seem to be connecting properly. anyone else having this problem? suggestions?
5/3/2010 3:16:09 PM
elaborate? wifi on iphone not connecting? Can you see the networks?
5/3/2010 3:21:27 PM
Go to cydia and look for push and wifi fix. Something like that, it's fairly common and I had the same problem on 3.1.2, but no issues for me on 3.1.3
5/3/2010 3:28:38 PM
yes iphone is not connecting to wifi. i can see networks under in the settings. but the status bar shows 3G as opposed to the wifi/airport looking symbol. when i try to choose my network the check mark appears like its connecting but then it disappears. but no matter what the status bar is only showing 3G not wifi.update: restarting modem and router seemed to fix the problem.[Edited on May 3, 2010 at 3:43 PM. soanyone have any recommendations on a golf GPS app?i really want one that can download entire courses at once bc i don't have very good service at most courses near where i work so it'd be pretty useless without that feature..[Edited on May 4, 2010 at 8:19 AM. Reason : asdf]

lol
5/4/2010 1:48:51 PM
5/4/2010 1:49:37 PM
like a golf app that tells you where each hole is? So you don't get lost? I'm confused.[Edited on May 4, 2010 at 2:00 PM. Reason : s]
5/4/2010 2:00:18 PM
for shot distances mainly..but they can do score keeping and a lot of other stuff[Edited on May 4, 2010 at 2:07 PM. Reason : (i'm just going to assume you've never played golf if you think getting lost is a concern..)]
5/4/2010 2:02:01 PM
Wasn't there someone on TWW that made a golf app when the app store first opened?
5/4/2010 2:27:57 PM
yea robster did
5/4/2010 2:39:32 PM
anyone jailbreak the ipad yet with success? i want to know battery life stats with multitasking, sluggishness, etc. so on the fence about this purchase but it all depends on that a4 chip and how good it is at multitasking
5/4/2010 2:44:42 PM
^ask in the iPad thread
5/4/2010 2:49:53 PM
the iPhone 3gs is great with multitasking. I'm sure the iPad is just fine.
5/4/2010 2:51:13 PM
yeah especially since the iPad is a 1Ghz proc.
5/4/2010 2:54:58 PM
iPhone 4.0 beta 3 is out.
5/4/2010 3:29:48 PM
