yeah this is a game changing recruit. Gott's obviously done a fine job bringing in good recruits. But Dennis Smith Jr is on an entirely different level of any other recruit he's brought in. Seems like for a while now we've been close with some guys like him, but always lose out to more traditional powers. Getting Smith Jr and hopefully Bam and putting together maybe the best class in the nation...that's how things can really start to change around a program.
9/10/2015 9:58:38 PM
Let's just hope Smith is Gott's Rose in the sense that he elevates his recruiting and not in the sense that his career gets derailed from injury.

pay the man. Best recruit in program history besides maybe Wilkins.
9/11/2015 7:27:11 AM
^somebody on twitter dug up some old rankings and found Wilkins ranked 11 by one service, and Hodge was ranked 7...so smith jr is ranked higher than either of them
9/11/2015 8:45:05 AM
that david thompson kid was a good recruit

From what I remember hearing, Chris Washburn was the top ranked recruit in his class. (Although I'm not really sure what constituted recruiting rankings in the '80s)Obviously didn't work out well, but everyone wanted him out of HS.[Edited on September 12, 2015 at 10:46 AM. Reason : tbdv]

Washburn's wiki page says

Im just pointing out that recruiting hasnt seemed like a liniting factor to me. Gott has gotten the same (good) results regardless of the talent his teams here have had.

^^I think there's a difference in a few top 100 recruits in one class, versus a few top 10-15 recruits
9/12/2015 1:00:52 PM
Gott has never had a top 10 recruit here, let alone top 5 (or two top 10's). And he has gone to 2 sweet 16's....

+ credibility to him and buzz williams for calling out these new rules that are going to ruin college basketball.
11/12/2015 6:22:03 PM
I know I know 1st rule...but please explain?
11/12/2015 8:20:59 PM
A bunch of ACC coaches did a roundtable discussion with Jay Bilas talking about all sorts of things. They had an opportunity to talk about the rules and Gott was the first coach to say he was concerned about the changes leading to 70 combined free throws or lackluster defense.Up until then every coach fakely said they thought it was great and they'd just have to adjust. Gott opened up discussion for more coaches to speak out against these awful rule changes. Buzz Williams absolutely ripped the rule changes and said he's concerned that the referees already had too much control over games these rules, at the very least, just put the game more into the judgement of the officials. In addition to that, he said the rules will lead to more teams playing the same way, less conflicting styles which will ultimately lead to the more talented teams winning more often.Hamilton said if it aint broke dont fix it[Edited on November 12, 2015 at 8:28 PM. What rule changes are they referring to? I only remember the shot clock being like 5 seconds shorter.
11/12/2015 9:34:45 PM

11/12/2015 9:44:04 PM
1 less time out. and faking u got fouled is a foul. reduce double timeouts (team time out near an official time out will combine). 1 shot techsbut you can now dunk in the warm up, so there's that. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/13037928/ncaa-announces-rule-changes-2015-16-including-30-second-shot-clock-fewer-outs
11/12/2015 9:55:08 PM
10 seconds to cross half court won't reset on dead balls. Only 3 time outs in the 2nd half. If a timeout is called within 30 seconds of the media time out it will become the media time out. Coaches can't call to from sideline during a live ball. No more 5 second call if the guy is dribbling the ball. Arch under the basket moved out a further foot.
11/12/2015 9:58:00 PM
No doubling up on timeouts near the media timeout is pretty much the best rule change ever.
11/12/2015 10:23:34 PM
You guys left out the most important, most damaging rules.
11/12/2015 10:46:53 PM
So UVA won't be able to hack people all game and get away with it?
11/12/2015 10:58:50 PM
11/12/2015 11:16:12 PM
^^^ They've tried to push that before. We ended up with classics like when NCCU shot 50 FT's against State in Raleigh a couple of years back.[Edited on November 13, 2015 at 12:44 AM. Reason : tbdv]

These points of emphasis will be like the points of emphasis every other year: called heavily during November/December, then rarely emphasized during conference play.I love getting rid of the 5 second call, though. That rule is fine, if there isn't a shot clock.
11/13/2015 9:06:35 AM
11/13/2015 9:14:58 AM
making the arc under the basket has nothing to do with that. all of these rules are put in place to increase scoring. that was explicitly stated so stop saying it was about the quality of the game. its nothing but nbaification.

Debbie gave him +2020http://www.gopack.com/news/2015/11/13/MBB_1113154447.aspx
11/13/2015 12:05:38 PM
Well deserved IMO.I've come completely around on him.
11/13/2015 12:07:50 PM
yep...well deserved indeed. he's really worked out for us so far. especially considering he was sorta hired outta nowhere.
11/13/2015 12:32:00 PM
As in we whiffed on our top choices and Debbie happened to have a personal connection with Gottfried. I'd say we got pretty lucky.
11/13/2015 12:35:18 PM
I'll happily take the 4 or 5 maddening games per season if the recruiting/postseason success stays at such a high leveltotally deserved
11/13/2015 12:37:00 PM
^^maybe a bit lucky, sure. i doubt any of us expected 2 sweet 16s in his first 4 years. but remember what happened when Fowler whiffed on his top choices? we wound up with Lowe. seems like DY had some semblance of a back up plan after missing out on her top choices.
11/13/2015 1:02:46 PM
+everything. hope he stays for a very long time.
11/13/2015 1:54:49 PM
Trolling UNC by giving the women's coach an extension at the same time???
11/13/2015 2:11:45 PM
11/13/2015 2:54:41 PM
Hes doing well but lets hold off on the lifetime contract for now...
11/13/2015 4:33:54 PM
^^What I meant is that I feel pretty lucky that our backup plan happened to work out so well. What's so hard to understand about that? Were you even here for the Lee Fowler years? His backup plan was the guy sitting closest to him after everyone else turned him down.[Edited on November 13, 2015 at 4:41 PM. Reason : ]
11/13/2015 4:40:26 PM
^^lol...we quite literally are holding off on the lifetime contract
11/13/2015 5:24:55 PM
he's earning it tonight
11/13/2015 9:18:56 PM
the rules may have ruined things for our program. we were able to score without the new rules and now that its easier for everyone else to score our advantage no longer exists.
11/13/2015 9:20:43 PM
Way to return the favor for that extension. I cant wait for the CBI
11/13/2015 9:53:22 PM
^Aren't you the big Doeren homer? How could you possibly hate on Gott? When Doeren has us as one of the top 16 teams in the country, let us know.
11/13/2015 9:57:48 PM
winning two games in a row doesn't really make you a top16 team but nice try.
11/13/2015 9:59:24 PM
Lol I can't wait to hear the rationale for how this was the coaches fault and not the players thegoodlife3
11/13/2015 9:59:42 PM
+Credibility to sign the extension knowing this year's team sucks
11/13/2015 10:01:44 PM
Congrats on the extension, well deserved, but tonight was pathetic. Time to wear the team out after that.
