My back of the envelope calc on how the recent budget bill gets us to $5Trillion in deficit spending by 2030, rather than by 2034 as estimated by the CBO:

Start with the Score the CBO sent Senator Markley, which assumes that the tax cuts in the budget bill that are temporary, are instead continually extended:

To simplify the calc I take the average of the deficit spending over the next 5 years - about $550 Billion added to the deficit each year.

The Trump admin has not shown a lot of adherence to allocations or budgets. I think it’s baked in that no matter what they propose you should assume they will run 20% over that:

Assume an additional $100Billion added to the deficit each year.

I think some form of economic downturn is likely in the next year. If you look at past downturns revenue dropped between 5% and 15%. I assume a 1 year 10% drop in revenues (~$500 billion loss if yearly revenue are $5T) and distribute it over the 5 year span so that would add another $100 billion

Assume Dems win mid-terms and clawback some of the budget cuts to Medicaid and other programs - Add $50 billion each year to the deficit

Assume a catchall for the US’s support of Israel, Ukraine, Houthi war, etc that will be emergency funding and is not included in the budget proposal: Add $50 Billion to the deficit.

If interest rates remain high, or even climb, it adds significant mandatory spending. My understanding is the CBO analysis assumed an average rate of 4.1% for this year and then it falls to 3.6%. The CFRB estimates that for every 1% increase in interest rates it costs us an additional $2T over 10 years to finance the debt:

If we hit some kind of stagflation scenario and rates do not fall, it could be as much as $200B above the CBO in additional deficit spending.

Add it up $550B + $100B + $100B + $50B + $50b + $150B = $1T in deficit spending for the next 5 years. We hit our $5T deficit ceiling in 2030.
