"our d was soft and the 3s aren't falling."

that has been the case in EVERY game against a decent opponent (plus elon of course). as a team we are shooting 32% from 3. take out Wood's disgusting shooting and it only goes up to 36%. horner is the only player on the team shooting above 35% from 3.

and good god scott wood sucks. how many 0-for games has he had now? he is currently 8-38 or 21%.

and for you people asking about vandenburg, he doesnt play b/c he is absolute garbage. even compared to wood. vandenburg is lost out there. at least woods KNOWS what to do, he just doesnt have the skill. vandenburg looks like he just learned how to run yesterday.

Freshman... gotta love them.

People are expecting 'Zo and Ryan to come in next year and be studly All-Americans. It ain't gonna happen. Never thought I'd say this, but thank God we'll have Javi as a SR leader next year! And Smith of course...

^ thats the stupidest shit i've ever heard. Sounds like something Dick Vitale would come up with.

And I'm curious...have the people knocking Wood even seen him play, or are you just looking at box scores? He looks pretty good for a freshmen. He can drive in for a layup, plays good defense, and he has great form on his 3ptrs, the range has just been way off (which makes me think/hope he is hitting the weight room hard and will adjust after some time).

what? you saying we shouldnt care that he has gone 0fer in multiple games b/c he has pretty form?? that is like saying that it is cool that jay davis threw 4 interceptions b/c they were all real pretty spirals. i mean it isnt like the college ball is heavier than the HS ball and he has to get ripped to be able to shoot.

look maybe the guy is a great shooter and just has something in his head and cant adjust to the college environment/speed, but dont give me this BS that he needs to buff up to shoot 3's.

and to answer your question, i was at the NO game and saw the NW game on tv.

^ umm, how about practicing some reading comprehension? I never said anything about him needing to buff up to shoot threes. I was saying maybe the reason he is struggling so much is because he is in the process of bulking up and its throwing off his range.

V
Not really sure where I was so unclear. Maybe you should work on your reading comprehension

The high school 3 point line is shorter than the college line.

I mean, if we're talking about stuff that could be messing him up, the extra foot could also be an issue.

you cant call it a slump until he's done something in college to prove he should be a good shooter

is john henson in a "playing well" slump?

Since going 4-4 in an exhibition game....he's gone 8-38 over 9 games.

Not really, but you're busy talking about weightlifting and how much the ball weighs, I thought I'd bring it up that there is an actual difference between HS and college for a 3-pt shooter.

If you're asking what I'm saying, I'll say he's a freshman and the game in college is bigger and faster and he's in a slump for whatever reason. He'll get out of it sometime.

Dude, just want to throw this out there. Big Dandy Vandy may sound stupid, but that's kind of the point. Up to this point the guy hasn't done shit. To be honest, at this point in time he doesn't even deserve the nick name. Either way, I'll be reppin' for the Big Dandy in Winston tomorrow. Throwing up those V's.

Wood needs some confidence or something. The shots will fall, eventually. Vandenberg needs to put weight on and adjust to the game.

you made a blanket statement that "scott wood sucks" and that and that vandenburg has no skill and is "complete garbage...looks like he just learned out to run yesterday" after admitting to only watching two games, ones in which wood arguably had his two worst games, and vandenburg wracked up a total of 6 mins.

you're making judgements about the skills of two freshmen by watching 2 of their first 6 games as college players.

you don't see the idiocy in that?

(i just realized i have seen the Marq game too, forgot that was on tv, so i guess i have seen 3 games out of 9 and 2 games out of 3 against real competition, but anyway...)

i have watched bball long enough to recognize an uncoordinated white guy

how bout this

right now, Vandenburg has a long way to go. IN THE GAME I SAW, he look like a guy who grew into his height too fast and he was completely lost on the court. He had no place in that game and it was againt friggin New Orleans. Maybe with alot of hard work and practice, he will make it to the point where he deserves to see the court. But judging by the way he moved w/out the ball and played D against NO, he is not there yet.

as for scott wood, the guy is supposed to be a 3pt shooter, that is what he was touted as, that is how i am judging him. As for that, the stats speak for themselves. Javi is shooting a better % and javi has never been considered a shooter. the guy is shotting 21% from 3 and he has shot more 3's than any other player on the team, he is average over 4 3pt shots a game but has mad only 8 3's. and, again according to the stats, he sucked equally bad in GA South and Elon games as he did against NO. NW actually wasnt a terrible game for him. He didnt score much but played some decent D. The guy has shown potential, gettting to double digits in other games. But the fact is, he has ALOT of work to do. When your 3pt specialist shoots 3's as badly as he has, it is not a good sign.

btw, for all you people defending vandenburg, is he injured? if not, why isnt he getting any PT?

Granted his 3s aren't falling yet, but he's earning his minutes with his >decent D lay. You say you watched the Marquette game, but you fail to mention his 5 steals. take those away, and we lose that game.

^ Vandy is more than slightly better than Bart. Vandy actually pays some D, gets some blocks and looks like he has at least the slightest idea of what he's doing out there. I don't see him playing that many minutes, but he's a bunch better than Bart.

^ That's just asinine. Taking away 5 steals in a game that was decided by 3 points is freakin' huge. Granted this is a minor point in discussing Wood's potential, but dismissing five steals? Really?

Alright, I know better, but I think we win this game. You damn well know Sid put a boot up some asses after the Elon debacle (a game we easily would have lost any of the last 3 years). It's time for Wood to put on his big boy britches and shoot like you know he's capable of. Davis is raw, but he's going to be a great 4 year guy for us. If we can get 20 servicable minutes out of Javi, and IF the rest of the team gets their bitch on, we win this.

I know, I know...

javi only played 20 mins in the elon game, which would seem to indicate that he wasn't 100%. i know what sid said about the situation, but i don't think mays would have gotten as many of javi's mins if he wasn't still hurting a little.

before anyone tries to shittalk to me

wood has played well tonight. still has work to do, but is showing much more potential than in the previous 9 games. he still cant shoot a 3 to save his life, but his overall game was decent tonight.

vandenburg still blew. made a good block/def play, then got lost on 2 defensive plays to give up easy layups and got a dumb off foul. plus he missed TWO fucking layups. ugh.

free throws are lowe's fault. Javi and horner miss waaaay too many FTs. wood misses too many for a good shooter. it would be nice if the guy who is picking up the most fouls, tracy, hits 70% or greater. the rest are all understandable

uh, it depends

davis missing FTs as a raw freshman is not his fault

he did a good job improving Tracy's FT form the last couple years but it would be nice if he could keep working on it since Smith gets fouled so much

Javi shooting so poorly as a guard is inexcusable. He doesnt bend his knees, and the coach should get on him about that

Umm, wat?

V thats what I'm doing over here....Skokiaan isn't talking about one guy missing...the whole team has been pretty terrible. Do you not think the coach should be responsible for instructing players to properly shoot free throws? Are they to be left to their own devices and figure it out on their own?

I'm hardly a Lowe hater, but saying the coach isn't responsible for teaching the team to shoot free throws is one of the more retarded things I've read on here lately.

for all the ills, it is good to see that this team seems to at least maitain their motivation when they're outmatched.

That said the missing of the free throws is troubling.

I'll blame bad inbounds plays, substitutions, sets, etc on Lowe if it goes wrong, but shooting a free throw is the on the player. period.

I find it funny that people actually insinuate that Sidney doesn't have our team shoot free throws in practice to help their argument as well. Seriously? Seriously?

serioulsy, how can you say that missed free throws are the fault of the coach? do you think they don't practice free-throws? i know there's team-psychology and confidence-coaching and all, but you think that it's the coaches fault that the players miss free-throws?

^^yes. just because they practice it doesn't mean the practice is effective. The effectiveness of practice is the difference between a good coach and a bad coach. Even if its the players' responsibility to do most of it on their own time, it's the coaches' job to make sure the practice is effective, that players are accountable, and that there is continual improvement.

If it were just one player for one year, that is one thing. But it's pretty much spanned a variety of players in all of lowe's years. None of us are privy to how the team practices, but the fact that this has been a general problem for Lowe's teams is not a good sign.

Shooting is the easiest skill to learn in basketball, has the greatest payoff on the court, and shooting FTs is the easiest type of shooting you will do on the court. Since the expected value from FTs is very high, a large amount of the coaches' emphasis should be on FTs.
