LOL The cop just ripped the kid's press patch off of his shirt. A shame though, they were last reporters not corralled into the whitewash zone. All media are now being ordered to leave under threat of arrest. Sickening.[Edited on August 19, 2014 at 12:58 AM. Reason : .]

How is this not illegal? If there is no martial law, no active investigation, no official curfew, what is the basis for detaining masses of people??
8/19/2014 1:00:12 AM
Media has been shut down. Oh well, we'll have to wait until the locals upload the rest of the night's events on Worldstar.Having the army to back them up made police much more brave. It's their town to do as they wish.Once the effectiveness of protests is neutered like it was tonight, you'll see anger turn into daylight shootings or terrorist attacks, crude at first but increasing in sophistication as the crisis continues.[Edited on August 19, 2014 at 1:07 AM. The Vice reporter is Tim Pool who made his mark during Occupy Wall Street as an essential livestreamer. There was an "I am Mike Brown" stream that showed a more overhead view of things. There are a few other livestreamers I am sure out there that I am not aware of.

They can't "legally" do it. But we as a society empower them with force. We don't have a police force that cares about citizen's rights and that's the story just as big as the killing of the kid here.

The numbers from that article aren't reliable. Several of the counties around Raleigh have acquired MRAPs in the past few months(they've since taken the photos of them bragging about them down from their websites), and that isn't shown on the wral map. By my count they could mass at least 8 fully armored vehicles and 700 assault rifles at a disturbance in the triangle area within a few hours...without asking for any federal assistance. It also says they have 18 police helicopters in Raleigh.[Edited on August 19, 2014 at 10:17 AM. Reason : .][Edited on August 19, 2014 at 10:24 AM. Reason : .]

police just want a reason to use all of their cool shit. smoke grenades? why not?
8/19/2014 10:10:05 AM
some of those are more legit than others
8/19/2014 10:19:35 AM
They really like the MRAPs and are trying to get as many as possible before the 1033 program is shut down, but really it's only good for the intimidation factor. Word on the street is the MRAPs are pretty easy to immobilize anyway, they're built for blast survival, not being overrun by a mob. Those old armored bread trucks are actually probably better suited for the personnel carrier roles that crowd policing requires.
8/19/2014 10:28:38 AM
I don't think the problem is that police have that equipment, its how they are using it. Some of that shit could prove useful in the event of a soft target terror attack, but really does not need to be used to raid a pot grow house....
8/19/2014 10:31:55 AM
Only one of those is an MRAP, and it's not in Raleigh or Wake County
8/19/2014 10:34:01 AM
I failed to post photos of these, but Raleigh and Durham also have a half dozen RV's they would use to process large numbers of prisoners on site before putting them in busses for transport. You'll be able these in action at this weekend's back to school festival on hillsborough street. They refined their techniques during the recent raleigh protests. I suppose the dozens of busses and RVs could also be used to build walls and corral protestors like they have been in Ferguson.^They have them too, I just don't have photos. It's only the redneck counties that are dumb enough to parade them around like it's a mudsling. Any of the neighboring counties would gladly drive their vehicles to Raleigh within an hour. So really, the number could be much higher. You can see that even journalists at WRAL and The News and Observer are having a hard time estimating the amount of military equipment here in the triangle.[Edited on August 19, 2014 at 10:48 AM. The problem very much is that the police have the equipment. It fosters a mentality, that I would prefer police don't have. We have things like a military and national guard for response to terror threats etc...
8/19/2014 11:26:59 AM
Would that mentality be?:-We are equipped with military hardware, so we must be at war.-Since we are at war, we are the good guys and the civilians are the enemy.-If I'm equipped with this hardware, my enemy must be as dangerous as I am, and are equipped with similar hardware-I need to use any means necessary to accomplish my goals in war against my enemy. There are no rules.

Which scenario is more likely:1.) Racist MO cop is rolling down the road having a bad day and decides to shoot a black teen innocently walking down the street after the kid gave him a little bit of lip.OR2.) Teenager who having committed a crime recently gets scared when stopped by police, gets into a physical altercation not wanting to end up in jail, and ends up getting shot.......
8/19/2014 1:51:14 PM
why speculate on what might have happened? we don't know.
8/19/2014 1:52:04 PM
3) Power hungry tough guy cop confronts teens walking in roads, is rude, is angry when kids don't respect his authoritay, escalates situation with his language and action, creates a confrontation where he has an unjustified fear for his life, fires weapon at kid, continues to fire until on the ground per training
8/19/2014 1:54:05 PM

^racially motivated these days means nothing more than "two races were involved"an unfortunate side effect of the overuse of the word "racism"sad but true[Edited on August 19, 2014 at 2:24 PM. Reason : ^^]
8/19/2014 2:21:53 PM
In context like this, I'd take "racially motivated" to mean that this cop saw two black kids walking down the street and he was kinda looking for trouble. Assuming they were up to no good. Racial profiling, I guess. Which would be why he stopped them...and then backed up and confronted them again, or whatever it was that happened. And from there things escalated. Of course, I don't know what happened, and I don't pretend to know. But that's what I kind of assume people mean when they say this may have been racially motivated.
