My interpretation is directed punishments like scholarship losses are sport specific. But probation is departmen wide. I could be wrong, though. Seems to be a common question.Even if probation only applies to football, common sense would tell you to come down harder since you now have two fucked up programs. The example wasn't made the first time, it seems.[Edited on July 13, 2013 at 12:05 PM. Reason : but its carolina so, whatever]

^ yep that's what would happen with a normal school. This is UNC, the NCAA's money maker, so it'll be different]
7/13/2013 12:52:25 PM
The things, it would be prudent for them to come down hard. Otherwise other schools will try this crap, and sue the shit out of the NCAA when they get stronger sanctions. People are already pissed off at the NCAA for ineptitude, and handling this incorrectly could really undermine them further...But they don't do shit intelligently.
7/13/2013 1:06:42 PM
I don't know that other schools would have any standing to sue. They agree to abide by all decisions the NCAA hands down, so they don't have much of a leg on which to stand. Further, we already see the absurd decisions they have mad regarding who to punish and who not to punish. The Duke player gets a 30k "loan" and the NCAA shrugs its shoulders. Cam Newton's father gets paid, and the the NCAA shrugs its shoulders. UNC football has a coach who is an agent, a tutor with limited funds paying thousands in parking tickets for players, and an entire fake academic curriculum for athletes, and the NCAA shrugs its shoulders. NC State has players selling a couple pairs of shoes and the NCAA drops the ban hammer. UConn fails a new regulation retroactively and the NCAA drops the ban hammer. All of this has happened, and schools haven't sued. Moreover, if other schools do try this and then sue, I imagine any court in the land would immediately rule against the school, because the school admitted to knowingly violating the rules. Unclean hands, yo. What instead will happen is that schools will either just start breaking rules left and right and deal with the consequences when and if they come (like UNC is currently doing), or enough schools will get fed up and leave en masse.

I don't feel like doing any research, so tell me what SMU did to get the death penalty
7/13/2013 1:28:40 PM
They were caught paying players, essentially via contract. The NCAA told them to cut it out and put them on probation. SMU continued paying the contracts.

aaronburro may be wrong about that detail, but the essence of his post is on point.I mean, I can recall historical details for days, but I don't really need them. What's been happening--what we've all known about forever--is an epic travesty of athletic "competition." Chapel Hill needs to go down, and everybody needs to know about it. Otherwise, fuck it.
7/13/2013 3:10:41 PM
NCAA has historically hammered smaller schools for much lesser violations. In addition, they do not mind penalizing major football programs like USC and Ohio St, because the NCAA gets most of its cash from the NCAA tournament anyway. Imagine Kentucky caught paying its players last year, will the NCAA vacate their title? No way, because it takes away from the credibility of March Madness. Of course, they've vacated a couple final fours with U Minn and Memphis, but that's about it. Kentucky, Duke, UNC and Kansas are the 4 college basketball programs that will never get hit. UCLA used to be too, but not now. Basketball programs need to cheat more than ever to get recruits and keep them on campus for more than an year. And the NCAA is obviously looking the other way to make it happen.Alabama State and Arkansas State did something exactly similar to UNC, forged grade changes via a rogue Prof with the athletic department claiming they had no idea. had to vacate wins. Double standard indeed.http://hbcuconnect.com/cgi-bin/forum.cgi?thread_id=16087

good luck getting any members to vote for that rule, its ridiculous.
7/14/2013 12:18:22 AM
They don't have to vote for it. The NCAA is judge, jury, and executioner. That's the beauty of it
7/14/2013 1:44:14 AM
Yeah except that the schools make the rules. the voting members would never agree to such a retarded rule.
7/14/2013 12:14:16 PM
Wait Penn state definitely sued and named unc in the lawsuit
7/14/2013 12:32:38 PM
The Penn State lawsuit is irrelevant. It is not an appeal to remove the post season ban and vacated wins. Its purpose is to keep the $50m or so in fines from leaving the State...
7/14/2013 1:04:10 PM
^^Penn State did not sue. The State of Pa. sued. There is a difference. See ^
7/14/2013 1:31:41 PM
That's the thing. The specific school doesn't have to sue. But so many people are growing weary of the NCAA right now, its at a tipping point. College sports doesn't need the NCAA to survive. Nothing says the college presidents can't form a new governing body.
