"Yeah, I saw that Tom Gabel has come out as transgender.

Can't say I've come to a better understanding of transgenderism. Gender is a social construct, is it not? Gender identity is in the brain. It has nothing to do with wearing dresses, playing football, or any culturally erected "norms" or "gender roles". But, what does it mean to feel like you're one gender or another when you have no point of reference? What if you lived on an island, never having any contact with any person, and as a result you did not know how your respective gender was "supposed" to act, how would you feel then?

What confuses me is that anyone "feels" like they are one gender or another. I can feel anger, sadness, compassion, but I don't know what it means to "feel" gender. I'm a male, but I've never been overly concerned with doing what is "masculine" for the sake of society's approval.

I would like to understand, although I can't help but wonder if the hormone therapy and sexual reassignment would be at all necessary or even desired if we lived in a society that didn't attempt to pigeonhole individuals.
"

I wonder about this too. I don't really have an answer to be honest. All I can say is that after living as a woman full-time the past 4+ months, it's a lot more of a physical thing than I originally thought. Some of my most pleasant days are when I'm just alone though and don't feel pressured to "act" a certain way. I mostly act the way that I want anyway but it still requires more energy to not out myself than I would like to expend. I identify as lesbian and even though I present a fairly feminine appearance I feel like I still act masculine in many ways.

Mostly my experience has just taught me to not care about gender much at all. I'm way more comfortable and happy than I used to be so whatever.

"Well many a transwoman regards the penis as a foreign object and wished as a child that it would go away; the social construction is more about gender expression than gender identity, as almost everyone, even trans people, knows what gender ze is from an early age but needs to learn how people of hir gender act and present themselves."

Why do they need to learn that? Why can't they just behave as they want? Assuming their parents aren't drilling one thing in their mind over another.

As far as regarding one's genitalia as a foreign object...I don't know. There are people that have felt the same about their arms and legs, and have over the course of time become convinced that they would be better off without the limb. It's called body integrity identity disorder, and I'm not seeing how it's any different.

That seems like a good, healthy approach.

Research has been done to show that trans people have brains resembling the sex or gender they identify as and not their biological sex. So it's not really the same thing. Trans people do tend to have high rates of BDD (body dysmorphic disorder) but I feel like that's pretty normal when your body doesn't match your brain. There are plenty of documented medical conditions that really have no business being called a disorder or disease or whatever.

In typical style for a tale of trans romance, this trans woman is now dating a trans man: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2154418/How-transgender-student-overcame-depression-bullying-broken-relationship-father-successfully-graduate-high-school.html

i have this theory that trannies get their junk snipped off because nobody liked them anyway but now they have a window of opportunity to instantly claim anyone who finds them unbearable is a biggot, and an instant fanbase among the internet lifers
it is a good theory

^but especially for people who, if they disclose their status, will lead the vast majority of potential partners to question their own sexuality

Anyway I posted ITT because someone from some show I never watch just came out as transgender; you can Google "Andy South" to find plenty of news articles, but just this clip from the first episode of Project Runway the designer appeared in should have given some clues: http://www.mylifetime.com/shows/project-runway/video/home-visits/season-8/episode-1/andy-souths-home-visit

I doubt it makes most people question their own sexuality. If you're a straight man and a woman you've been hitting on at the bar says, "btw, I'm transgendered and still have a penis," I can't see that man going, "hmm do I still want to hit that???"

What a fucking load of horseshit this is.

Just because you're not normal, you don't get to make up stupid terms to call people that are normal.

If you want to cut your sexual organs off, for whatever reason, that's pretty much so the definition of not normal. I can see the argument being made that neither are more correct than the other, that neither one is inherently "bad" or whatever, but by definition if there's <1% of the population that does something, that makes them not normal. Which, like, embrace it, be proud, tell the world about it, whatever you want to do, but don't pretend that it's normal. It's not.

that is the exclusive right of the hegemon amirite

Anyway, at least it's nice to be more specific about what type of "normalcy" is described, like "neurotypical" as opposed to "autistic," "heterosexual" as opposed to "queer," "able-bodied" as opposed to "disabled," "cisgender" as opposed to "transgender," "trichromatic" as opposed to "colorblind," "monosexual" as opposed to "a-" or "bi-" or "pansexual," "sighted" as opposed to "blind," or "binary" as opposed to "genderqueer"; it's clearer than using "normal" as the go-to word for "not autistic" and also "not queer" and also "not disabled" and so on.

(FTR most of the hegemonic terms in that list apply to me: I actually am able-bodied, cisgender, trichromatic, sighted, and binary; no Oppression Olympics intended here.)

no, it's common sense

we "normals" are so because we make the standard...we are typical of the species, and it is expected that a person is male or female...this is not an opinion, it is fact

for you "non-normals" to make up a word for the VAST majority is just silly...you people make a far bigger deal out of your faulty genes than the average educated non-conservative does and as such, you specifically, intentionally, and preemptively set yourselves apart

i give not two shits about the average "non-normal" (ie. anyone who isn't fully - physically, mentally, and emotionally - male or female)...i am 100% accepting of the fact that nature is not consistent and not belonging to majority does not make you less in MY eyes

when you open your (usually loud and whiny) mouth and make a big deal out of something that shouldn't be one...then i judge and dislike you*

OPs best chance at living a happy life has to be to move to a huge city like NYC, Chicago, SF, etc and seeks out a trans community. Given how NC's politics are, I would probably fear for my life, and even online dating would be like casting a narrow net.

not exactly sure what i said would warrant that type of reply, but i'll bite anyway

if you think the chances of a transgender person finding a warm, safe, supportive community in a state that just voted to amend the constitution to make gay marriage 'super duper illegal' are so high, go ahead and open a tranny bar and cash in.

i don't know a ton about trans people, but i have had a few trans students (ZOMG they exist!) tell me that they specifically moved to California because they weren't sure where else to go.
