seems like a good price with the specs you get, but damn, the version with windows is like a 100 bucks more.

^^^Why don't you just get the M11X? The older ones with the core 2 duos got cheap.

thinking about it but am also considering the asus UL30 and UL31 lines as well. just wondering if there are other machines that fit my criteria before i make my decision

yeah, I've been holding out on the m11x for a while, keep seeing the r1 version hover around 550 or so, but I'd much rather have the r2 version, but I'm not spending 900+ for one. Plus the hinge problem is a huge issue. I mean I'd rather have an updated cpu at least since my current one is c2d as well.If they had a 13 or 14" alienware for about 1k for a good value, I'd pick that up instead of a cheap netbook.

ohz m11x r2 on sale 699 for i5 and 8gb ram. You can get it around 660 with EPP.http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2659355

but is the battery life on the r2 the same as the r1?

depends on if you use the gpu, the nice thing about it is that it auto switches without rebooting unlike the r1. But people have said you get about 3 hours when gaming and about 5-6 hours when surfing the web.
