I'm going to be doing a few track days this year with nesba. I'd like to find a bike I care less about than my pretty repsol RC51, but I'll be going regardless.

alright, n00b time!i took the rebel out last week to get dinner with some friends and it started up as usual (usually takes a couple of times, since it'll catch and then quit, but generally not a big deal)...when i went to start it after dinner, about an hour and a half later, it tried, but would never catchit doesn't have a kickstart, but i know you can roll-start them most of the time (the guy i bought it from demonstrated it from cold and it worked)...i tried to roll start on a pretty good incline, but no dice...eventually, it wouldn't even try to starti assumed a dead battery, so i had a friend jumpstart me from his car battery and it fired right up, no problemwhen i got home and put it away, i put the battery tender on it and it's been hooked up for a couple of days...i went to start it today and it barely even tried to turn over...after one near-catch, it quit completely and it won't even clicki think the obvious answer is that the battery is shot, but the neutral light and headlight are on, bright as they usually are...that may not mean anything, but my only experience with a dead battery was my mustang, and on that, NOTHING would come on, lights or otherwise, even if 15 minutes previously it had started up without trouble
3/18/2009 1:35:42 PM
Yeah, try a different battery
3/18/2009 2:07:31 PM
Probably battery. Cold will kill them quick if you haven't been riding.DO NOT jump from a car battery. If I recall correctly the voltage is far too high and can fry the shit out of your electrical system.
3/18/2009 6:00:07 PM
^ it was my understanding from browsing the forums (http://www.rebel250.com/ has become my favorite ), as long as the car's not on, it's okay...it's the car's charging system that does the damage, not the battery itselfi'm not an engineer or anything but the most basic of mechanics, but my understanding is that the battery just provides 12v max...it doesn't push anything through the motorcycle's electrical system but whatever the bike requires to start (unless the car's on, in which case it's recharging and WILL push that power through the bike)you need to car on when jumping another car because if you drain the battery too much with the jump, the provider's car might not be able to start...the bike doesn't pull enough to drain a 4-times-as-big battery, so it's a non-issuesomeone correct me if i'm wrong...i'd rather be corrected and know the truth than go on being ignorant also, from what i've read online, the 250 is pretty easy to bump-start, but you have to have it in 2nd or 3rd and there's a bit of technique to it...there are a number of people who said they've bump-started their bikes on level ground just by walking themas an update, i took the battery by advance and they checked it...after nearly 3 hours of charging, it's fully and only pushing 75 amps...my tiny bike needs 150 to start i wish i could find a sealed battery to replace this one...i didn't even know they made batteries you had to fill with acid, let alone ones you have to keep full of water
3/18/2009 7:27:44 PM
There's nothing wrong with jump starting from a car battery. It's even suggested in my owner's manual.
3/18/2009 8:39:09 PM
Quag, our bikes probably have the same engine ('91 cb250) and it's easy as hell to bump start. I would use 1st or 2nd. Just get up a light jog, dump the clutch and the bike will turn over. Pull the clutch in again, hop on, and ride to your heart's content. Or that's my method at least. As for the battery, I guess I overlooked the car being on detail. You guys are definitely right.

^Son of a bitch. Good shit happens after I get out.Of course, rocking a cruiser at a speed course might turn a few heads.
3/18/2009 11:10:56 PM
if u can't bump start a lil 250 then u need to start eating ur wheaties. cake walk compared to a liter twin.
3/19/2009 10:46:16 AM
it's not so much that i CAN'T, it's just that i've never seen it done in detail and so i've never tried to do it correctlyany reason this wouldn't work for the motorcycle? i currently have a 1.5a one from wal-mart that was $20...but this is only $5 and i would assume it would work for a car, too...my only concern is how it regulates the power it pushes out...i know motorcycle batteries are supposed to be maintained at ~1a...will this automatically do it correctly, or am i asking to kill my battery? dude at HF said it would be fine, but i can't bring myself to trust him http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=42292also looking at cut-off switches...not so much for theft deterrent as for reducing battery drainage when not in use:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=97853http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92688[Edited on March 19, 2009 at 11:53 AM. who on here does basic maintenance/tune-up stuff? the rebel is ALMOST back to what i would consider good working order, but occasionally it'll still stick and i get crap for power, so i'm thinking one more solid cleaning would be a good idea...yes, i SHOULD know how to take apart, clean, and reassemble a carb, but i don't (i'd like to learn, of course)...i was thinking that someone who knows more than me might be willing to look the whole thing over, tighten what needs to be tighten, let me know what might need to be replaced, and take it out for a quick ride to see if they feel anything weird (at about 50mph it feels like it shimmies a bit, but that could be because it's a small/light bike and a good breeze and/or rough roads make for a bumpier ride)also, i can't remember if i posted on here about the imploded tank, but i was hoping to take care of that...i don't know what caused it (it's a gravity tank and the wrong cap is on it, so maybe that did it...or maybe a vacuum hose is pinched - does the reb even use vacuum hoses? - and it caused the suction), but i was thinking someone with an air compressor might be able to help me pop it back out...it's also only got primer on it, since the guy before me had it chem stripped, so i'd like to paint it (if it's off anyway, might as well)so, any takers? let me know what you'd charge

3/26/2009 2:33:24 PM
Igor is in maryland or some shit. I'll tell ryan to take a look at this thread
3/26/2009 7:33:47 PM
yeah, Igor moved to MD like a year and a half ago... you might try zxappeal also if you can't get up with tripleD4u, as far as i know he's still taking on work.
3/26/2009 9:00:53 PM
Ryan definitely knows his shit. but if he can't or you're closer to me, then yes, I do bike work. Have for many years.
3/27/2009 9:36:16 AM
oh, i know he knows what he's doing...all the work he's done for me in the past has been top notch and he's awesome about explaining, in terms someone like me can understand, exactly what he's doing...i just figure he must be pretty busy, and i think he's moving in the next couple of months...all things considered, i'd rather not be the obnoxious guy who keeps pestering him when he's got other things going on [Edited on March 27, 2009 at 9:43 AM. From personal experience, Rebel carbs are a bitch. They're simple, but the space you're working in is so small it makes life unnecessarily difficult. Good luck with that We ended up grinding down the adjustment knob (for lack of a better term) so that it was adjustable after being installed. I am just assuming yours is the same because they have seen little to no change, but I don't remember the exact year of your rebel. Also, my Rebel definitely had a shimmy in the 55/60+ range. Never hurts to check it out, though.
3/29/2009 7:07:37 PM
How do you guys feel about bandits(mainly the 600)? The price point is REALLY appealing, but I have to think they're dirt cheap for a reason. I know there are reasons, but what makes, say, an sv, so much more valuable? Also, anyone who's ridden one, I would love to hear simple commentary on power, ergos, repairs, etc. Advice on the 1200 is welcome.
4/1/2009 8:43:22 PM
When I had my SV, I loved it. It never broke down unless I came to a stop sign and I pretty much just fell over It was pretty heavy compared to my R6. But I don't think its a bike that will "get away from you." Lots of low end power versus the 4 cylinders which have the high speed power. But it was definitely mechanically sound and easy to maintain. I always felt the ride was pretty smooth too... Would I go back to an SV? Umm I wouldn't go "back" I would just get another one and have the R6 too
4/2/2009 9:59:37 AM
one question... inspections???i just got my new 2010 registration, and it's got an inspection deadline on it. any of you peoples like me and never had a bike inspected? it's going to be more trouble getting my bike to pass inspection than its worth.[Edited on April 4, 2009 at 12:58 AM. Reason : ]
4/4/2009 12:29:30 AM
my biggest concern with not having the bike inspected would be the weak point it creates in your court case in case you get run over. If someone runs you over and it's entirely thir fault, they can still claim contributory negligence on your part and say your bike was not safe to have on the road. laws regarding contributory negligence vary from state to state, but in your situation i would rather find a shop that would pass your bike with minor modifications rather than forgoing inspection alltogether. I hear medical bills get ridiculous with bike accidents. just ask BigBlueRam and ncsukat
4/4/2009 11:05:18 AM
^True. It isn't that hard to get a bike inspected either. One of my friends took his cbr to a local dealer, and it only took a few minutes and was something like 10 dollars. I think they just check signals, headlights, horn, tires, etc.
4/4/2009 11:45:15 AM

4/8/2009 5:59:49 PM
yes
4/8/2009 6:50:07 PM
who gets a bike inspected
4/8/2009 11:45:50 PM
Someone who wants to renew their fucking registration.
4/8/2009 11:46:17 PM
ive never had a problem with it. altough ive never had 1 bike for more than 2 years. ive never been called out on it
4/8/2009 11:57:10 PM
Well now bikes are being handled like cars. No sticker, but you have to have it inspected to renew the registration.
4/9/2009 7:48:38 AM
^ didnt realize that, how do they track it? do they have the barcodes, etc. on the stickers now?
4/11/2009 7:38:59 AM
and are older bikes exempt?
4/11/2009 9:50:56 AM
Your registration card I'm guessing. When you go to renew your tags, they'll probably ask you about your inspection, or if you do it online it'll have a due date on the new card. When I registered my R6 in November, the card had an inspection due date on it. If you gotta put tags on it, I'm pretty sure it's not exempt...
4/11/2009 10:15:46 AM
thats why i like tn, no inspections
