meh. mostly i just worded that way because at first it was going to be a jab at the decemberists. but then i switched course midway through to be more about music in general.

A better way to look at it is that perhaps giving people a taste of the wonders of classical orchestra via the music of a well-known band will encourage them to dig deeper and cultivate a taste for the classics[Edited on July 10, 2007 at 1:19 AM. Reason : typo]
7/10/2007 1:18:41 AM
It's pretty cool seeing some of my favorite groups using orchestral accompaniment but it does seem gimmicky on some level. Although with as much as I listen to nowadays I don't know if I can differentiate between a gimmick and an earnest attempt at music anymore.
7/10/2007 2:10:41 AM
And with the Decemberists, most of those songs already HAD string arrangements on the album versions. It would have been neat to see that come to life in a live setting. My friend in LA said she was losing her shit.
7/10/2007 2:15:54 AM
and that's great, really. i'm not a fan of the decemberists, but if i was, i'm sure i'd be going crazy for it too. it just makes me wish that more people were exposed to a more a deep appreciation of what an orchestra can do.
7/10/2007 2:22:15 AM
I do enjoy listening to an orchestra but nowhere near the level of someone who can appreciate the arrangements. Mostly comes down to the dated feel an orchestra has on most people unless Nickleback decides they need a power ballad with some feeling.
7/10/2007 2:26:41 AM
god i hate to keep going on this tangent. but yeah, i think contemporary music is certainly more visceral and immediate than much of classical music. and i certainly don't listen to classical most of the time when i'm driving in my car or anything. but certainly some of the most profound and beautiful moments i've experienced have been when listening to "classical" music (though much of my favorite stuff has been made in the past 100 years)
7/10/2007 2:32:23 AM
bottom line: fuck the decemberists

^ I'm seeing them in Atlanta with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra this Friday. I'm really excited about it. I've resisted listening to the full show, as I have a feeling it will be an identical or similar setlist, but what I've heard has blown me away.

Listening to the Twilight Sad album(14 albums, 15 winters) and saw this thread, thought I'd jump in. It's good.Went to Pitchfork this weekend, and really liked TS, Menomena, and Battles. I liked a lot of others like deerhunter and new pornos, but those three really stood out for me.
7/17/2007 11:06:06 AM

7/17/2007 12:33:32 PM
yeah, but, it's easier than searching through a years worth of EP's released monthly in order to compile it though. And, it actually is a bit different---- they reworked 9 of the tracks and they're different from how they appeared on the monthly EP releases:http://pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/43847-bishop-allen-tie-up-ibroken-stringi-tour
7/17/2007 12:42:35 PM
StillFuchsia, i think you try to come off as a bitch way too muchlighten the hell up some...by godjspack is a raging faggot also...that is all
7/17/2007 12:46:00 PM
I'm not being a bitch about it, it's a good collection for people who haven't heard anything of his before. But if you were excited to hear about the "new Bishop Allen" and then see a bunch of songs you already know, it's rather anticlimactic.
