Started it on a whim (got it used for cheap) but it's actually really good. Told from the perspective of a autistic teenager (though very high-functioning autistic). Interesting stuff.

^ I read that when it came out and I'd seen/heard a lot of hype about it. I seem to remember it as just OK. A few good parts, but nothing spectacular or memorable for me. Maybe I would have liked it more if I hadn't had such a high expectation.

^^that's a great book, I really enjoyed it. If you like that you may want to read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. It also has a child narrator who while is quite naive, is still extremely intelligent for his age.

Right now I'm reading Ghostwritten by David Mitchell. It's a good, well-written book, but a bit strange. I'm hoping it all comes together at the end. Has anyone else read it?

^^^How recently did that come out? I've been wondering what Stephenson's been up to since finishing off the Baroque Cycle.

Finished Curious Incident; definitely interesting and gives a (from what I've heard) pretty accurate glimpse into a type of mind very different, and then again not so much in some ways, different than mine. Very good read, and didn't take too long.

Still digesting Guns, Germs, and Steel in small quantities. Made the mistake of bringing it to work and it's been sitting neglected on my desk for quite some time. At home I just started on:



Saw this a couple months ago and thought it looked interesting; picked it up a couple days ago. Should be fun as long as he doesn't delve too far into the scientific minutiae...

Finished Wonder Boys this morning. Stellar overall, but it almost felt like things wrapped up a little too nicely. Can't beat a fight scene involving a tuba and a dead snake, though.

Went by the library and picked up two more Chabon novels (Final Solution and Yiddish Policeman's Union) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

Barnes and Noble still had Oryx and Crake, one of the most profoundly effecting books I've ever read (although I think people kind of think I've gone off the deep end when I say that) and Black Swan Green, along with The Areas of My Expertise if you're looking for hilarity, in the super duper cheapo bargain bin.

Oh, and if you haven't read it, I cannot recommend Cloud Atlas highly enough. It's my favorite book, hands down. I just started to read it again and I'm still blown away by basically everything about it.

Recently I've read the first 3.5 books of the Earthsea Cycle, a bunch of shitty but cool Isaac Asimov books, and I'm about 90% done with Asimov's Nemesis, which is great (conceptually, at least--but he's a fucking terrible writer).
