Well an H1 has more room- my knees are basically in the dash on a D90. I would have to go with the Defender, though justifying the decision without showing some bias is hard.
11/27/2008 11:34:14 AM
I would take a NAS 110 or a SEMA CKD 110 over an H190 is a bit closer of a decision
11/27/2008 11:41:00 AM
you don't have to drill the manifold, the pipe off the collector is fine...
11/27/2008 12:23:36 PM
So it dosent matter if the probe is before or after the turbo?
11/28/2008 9:54:31 PM
i've usually seen/heard that preturbo is a better reading
11/28/2008 10:10:59 PM
OK im just gonna go back to putting it in the EGR block off plate- Matt can you weld stainless to mild steel?
11/28/2008 10:27:07 PM
i can't. somebody with a tig might be able to?
11/29/2008 1:02:16 AM
this is what I want to do, i think the threaded fitting for the probe is stainless, might be wrong. ill hit it with a magnet tomorrow and seewell except that I want to weld the threaded bit direct to the plate[Edited on November 29, 2008 at 2:56 AM. Reason : lol]
11/29/2008 2:52:22 AM
11/30/2008 1:18:22 AM
the plate isnt thick enough- and with the angle of the opening behind it it needs to be at a 45deg angle.but the threaded bung appears not to be stainless after all, so looks like all I need to do is MIG it where I want it.I should also mention that this little engine pushing this awkward box of a vehicle around means its working pretty hard, wether or not I am towing anything.[Edited on November 30, 2008 at 6:51 PM. hmmm...i might buy a Discovery or Discovery II as my DD and tow rig when I get back. Can't decide if I want:A: moderate sports car/DD (350z, C5, S2k), jet ski, possibly classic 4x4 project (prob early Bronco)or B: Disco as DD/tow rig/offroad toy, jet ski, boat, inexpensive track car (Miata, 240sx, DSM, etc)
12/3/2008 8:24:47 PM
they're getting cheap as hell now, good deals to be had. don't expect one to tow much though. the 4.0 is pretty weak for a v8, and the suspension is fairly soft.
12/3/2008 10:12:10 PM
i don't need it to tow much...just a 17-20' boat.
12/3/2008 10:15:14 PM
A D2 will pull a 20ft boat just fine, but I would reccomend the '03-'04 models as they got the bump in displacement from 4.0 to 4.6- and it does make enough difference when towing. Jennifers old '03 SE felt better pulling the 19ft Bayliner than the Escalade did, although the 'sclade could pull it 90mph and make it look good.Drawbacks to a D2 are all technology related. The Discovery started overseas in '89, and went for the most part unchanged until 94 when they started selling them here. It was a good old fashioned V8, solid axle, full time 4wd station wagon. If the ABS went wonky on you, fuck it, pull the fuse and the bulb from the cluster and keep rolling. Then in '96 they switched to a Generic Engine Managment System with distributorless ignition (and of course OBDII)- this in my opinion is the best of both worlds: the old school Disco, with the ability to scan for trouble codes using a cheap handheld scanner, and no problematic Lucas distributor to worry about. LR sold a million units in 1996, most ever, and I bet 70% are still on the road, especially the Discoverys. Then in 97 they went and dicked it up by starting an "advanced evaporative emissions control" program. These are still fairly simple trucks, with OBDII and all but parts like the ECU, evap components, fuel pump, etc are more expensive. 99 was the last year for the D1 (half year) and even the base SD models got the good parts inside, some I believe even had the dual moonroofs and leather that was usually reserved for the SE/LE/LSE models. Then the D2 came out, full of BMW influence. New motronic 5.2 engine management, reworked transmission with electronic control (and no dipstick ), trouble prone ABS system that requires a proprietary scantool to access, and a horrible tendency to shit head gaskets, front driveshafts, and gum up exhaust valves. Not to mention wacky optional systems with their own laundry list of issues, like self-leveling rear suspension, active cornering enhancement, etc. BUT it had better road manners and flashier looks, so folks snapped them up left and right. Better towing, fancy traction control, hill decent, much better radio, more cargo room (8in more in the back) and much MUCH bigger repair bills. The D2 is also a great truck, but at one point there were 5 independent shops in the triangle whos profitable work consisted almost solely of D2 repairs, not to mention the dealership in Cary. This is NOT the vehicle for someone with a DIY complex. In conclusion, I love the D2. Ive had 4 of them, and they drive marvelouslly, but I wouldnt want to own one if I didnt know how to work on them. A D1 on the other hand, is the european equivalent of a '79 F150 or a '86 Silverado. With some good guidance and mechanical aptitude anyone can keep one running (which is what a land rover is all about right?)

Ive actually considered building a little hot rod one, A black '94 or '95 but with a 4.6, cam, headers, 5 speed, and 4.75s... total and absolute waste though. There is this old fucker in Cary with a '89 I think Range Rover and a worked over 4.6 in it, I got to ride one day, its a strange feeling doing 95mph in an old shitbox like that. I think he said he thought it was 325hp, I laughed to myself and walked off.

Well then, I think you have me talked into the D1 if I go the Rover route. Sounds like you avoid a large chunk of the Rover headaches and wallet drains by going that route--and you get shorter overhangs, to boot.I'm sure it'll still tow all I need.http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ctd/923401465.htmlthat looks like an awful lot of truck for the money.
12/4/2008 7:58:01 AM
If you had to pick the first generation body style Range Rover, which one would you get?
12/4/2008 8:43:19 AM
87 or 88. No swaybars, no ABS, and most importantly a transfer case with a locking center differential. 89-95.5 had a Borg Warner case that you couldnt lock.Drawbacks to the 87-88 trucks- Interiors arent as flashy (if that matters), the stock axles are 10 spline (easily upgraded with later model parts) and the 3.5 engines are fucking weak. However- you have to remember the truck is 20 years old at this point, and that a later 3.9 or better yet 4.2 engine will bolt directly in. You can keep the 3.5 but you will need to keep the truck light as possible and regear for certian- unless you are cool with getting passed by horse and buggy funeral processions. I wheeled my '88 a lot at Uwharrie with stock gearing and a worn out motor, with a detriot, 33s, 24 spline rear conversion, etc and had a lot of fun.

12/6/2008 12:08:39 AM
Oh, Luke is the crazy guy who works for Larry at Rover Automotive.Wheres it leaking? Before:Update on my truck- new stance, got rid of the clear corners, etc, installed flares, coming along nicely. After:Got the diff guards installed today, need to do the steering rods next. Currently reworking the front bumper a little, then new winch w/synthetic line, and probably lifting another inch.[Edited on December 9, 2008 at 8:49 PM. Reason : yeah]

So it sounds like, for my purposes, I need a Discovery 1, without air suspension, and the later the year, the better...right?do they all have lockable center diffs? any of them come with diff locks? how stout is the drivetrain?
12/9/2008 9:58:53 PM
i can vouch for disco 1.my sister had one (sold it to optmus after tranny issues). man talk about stout, that thing would run and drive over anything and anyone. never had a major issue. heck, changing the oil was harder than swapping out the front shocks. .but yeah, up until the tranny problem, it was an awesome car. I would def. love to own another one. my sister too. not the best gas mileage though. of course we bought ours from a lady who barely drove it and sold it to use for cheap.
12/9/2008 10:03:53 PM
paint those damn rims. what are you going to do with the green truck?^^most all of them except some of the later disco 2's had cdl's, or you could at least easily enable it to lock. the axles aren't very strong. rest of the drivetrain is decent. i wouldn't bother with one personally, and knowing you i don't think you'd like one much either but that's pure opinion/speculation.

12/10/2008 7:04:10 PM
^^^, 6^Is it just the axle shafts that are weak? That sounds like no big deal...beat on them until/unless they pop, then spend a few hundred bucks for better ones.If I got one, I'd prob go with 33s and lockers.
12/10/2008 7:09:16 PM
for the rears, go for the $400 rovertracks shafts (made by moser) I may have twisted mine a little but havent broke them yet for the fronts, HD upgrades are currently not in production, but a couple people are working on getting them made again at the moment. i have never broke one of these, but ive taken care not to wail on them too badly, and never run a locker up fronti forget how much a detroit for the rear is, trutracs are about $450 and ARB air lockers can be gotten through ECGS for $750 but youll need a compressor, etc. I run a detroit rear at the moment, its enough to have fun at uwharrie but there are times where guys locked front and rear have more fun than i do. all that is about to change though.
12/10/2008 7:16:16 PM
Cut some tube and the stupid ass limb riser tabs off the bumper.OK next project, steering link swap from the other truck, and paint the wheels black.
12/10/2008 11:02:04 PM
put some of that black paint on the snorkel while you're at it.
