good post, solid read.only 3 weeks and 1 day til the game.... cannot wait to stomp App st.
8/11/2006 9:19:18 AM
^ I wouldn't be so eager to say we'll stomp App. State if I were you... Most major college football Division I-A schools start their season off playing a Division I-AA school, and we're playing the defending national champions of I-AA, and they should have the #1 ranking going into the pre-season. We will have to work harder for our first "W" than most people think, and it's VERY possible that we can lose our first home game of the season in a newly dressed-up stadium to a I-AA team.
8/11/2006 10:13:08 AM
^I'm with this guy. and they are ranked #1 according to the preseason polls.. We will have to play at the top of our game and not look past them.
8/11/2006 10:16:35 AM
Although we should never look past anyone... App State doesn't have a chance in hell at upsetting a decent 1-A school... I'd even venture out and say there is only a 20% chance of them beating Duke and <20% chance of them beating ECU
8/11/2006 10:45:12 AM
^ Are you serious, dude? You seriously need to do some more research on how college football works.Basically, what I'm saying is the only thing different between I-A and I-AA college football is the 1.) money/budgets backing the programs and 2.) the overall talent level of the players/recruits.Even if you are in I-AA, if you're #1 then you have to be pretty darn good and show a high level of competitive play. That competitive play can easy come up from behind and bite the Wolfpack in the ass during the first home game of the season. That's all I'm trying to say...
8/11/2006 10:54:39 AM
Yeah, but a truly talented player will not go to a I-AA team when he could play I-A ball. Therefore, the talent level on the best of I-A teams is not as good as the talent on a I-AA team which means: asswhoppin'
8/11/2006 11:00:29 AM
8/11/2006 11:05:43 AM
we might not "stomp" them as i said above but we are definitely going to win. the drop off in talent from a 1-A team and a 1-AA is a pretty significant difference. i dont care if they are the number 1 ranked team preseason. im glad they are number 1... hope they come in all jacked up and excited to defend their title, only to take an L. and what school do or did you go to? have some fucking faith, its a game against an in-state team. we will be pumped for that and the fact that its the first game in newly finished CFS.i think you are the one that needs to do some research on college football sm.i hate app too so this will only make the victory that much sweeter.[Edited on August 11, 2006 at 11:07 AM. 8/11/2006 11:06:09 AM
If we turn the ball over 4 times, which we have shown to do, we could be in trouble
8/11/2006 11:08:54 AM
It's true, a really good division 1-AA team beating an average division 1-A team in football, would be equivalent to the best women's college team beating an average men's team, there's no way its going to happen. Each player at each position on a 1-A team is going to surpass the 1-AA in athleticism big time. Appalachain St. might have one and only one player on their team that would start for State.

Football is such a team game, and at almost every single position we're going to have more talented athletes. Their starters *might* be equivalent to our backups in a few cases.A loss would be a total and tragic fluke of football nature. It'll never happen.I wouldn't want the players to look past them certainly, and I don't think it'll be an ass-whooping. But it won't be too close and there's not a bat's chance in hell that we'll lose.[Edited on August 11, 2006 at 12:27 PM. Reason : .]

Im not sure vegas will make a spread for this game but if they did or if they do I predict App St. would be about 21-24 pt dogs. We SHOULD beat the everliving shit out of app st., we have athletes on our team that could easily be playing for florida st., florida or miami right now

From reading the comments above regarding my feelings above about this football contest, and in decency, I REALLY would like to see the Wolfpack win this game (they need to win in order to compete for a "good" bowl bid), but all I'm saying is that given the way the Wolfpack has played poor offensively the past 2 years along with the good nature of the App. State team, I just think that this might as well be treated like any other ACC game. From previous years, we seem to not win against the mediocre programs and dominate the powerhouses"How do you beat FSU, GT, and play BC and VT well, but lose to the likes of UNC, Wake Forest, and almost Southern Miss by a large margin."And that stuff about the "best Division I-AA team is = worst Division I-A team" is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard.Let's investigate into this further: 1.) Not all Division I-A football players are necessarily more athletic than Div. I-AA. Alot of players just don't make the academic cut in high school to even be considered for a Division I-A school (especially if they didn't get a athletic scholarship).2.) Some players aren't just in the best high school programs with enough consistent recognition to even be considered by Div. I-A recruiters. For example, Chuck likes to recruit from Miami's Killian High School, but that doesn't mean that everyone that plays for them is a potential star (not including Stephen Tulloch): that would be against the laws of probability. If a stellar player in a no-name high school isn't getting his name out, nobody will know about him untill he get's his chance, and his only chance might have been just a Division I-AA school.3.) Alot of players, in general, aren't as good as they're intended to be in the future at a given time. College football doesnt not equal high school football. Some players don't really discover their full potential untill college. That's why you really can't rely heavily on those "recruiting stars" on those sites. This is what makes recruiting so tough. Like the above statement, if someone that may not look like he has alot of talent in high school goes to a Division I-AA school and grows as a player, he's an instant impact player.Like I said, the team is #1 in Division I-AA college football, and the media professionals these days do alot of research into their rankings, and you don't become #1 in anything in life automatically. I surely hope to God that we win, but it WILL be a very hard fought battle, if you don't believe that, you better go ask somebody!
8/11/2006 1:28:18 PM
the chances of a player going unnoticed in high school and playing for a division 1-AA school and then blow up into a big star is very very rare. Its like pitchin a no-hitter it just doesnt happen much. The majority of people that play for a div. 1-AA team play there for a reason: they suck, they never had quite what it takes to play Div 1-A, and in the ACC at that. They dont run quite as fast, dont jump quite as high, or arent quite as strong. EVERYONE that starts for state has all those capabilites and they are all that much more talented then the APP St. players. I have a buddy that went to high school with me that plays for App St...there were 2 people on our team in high school that were better than him just at that position. We will dominate the shit out App St.
8/11/2006 1:42:17 PM
Yeah, saying that we shouldn't overlook them is one thing, but saying it's on par with an ACC game is completely ignorant.
8/11/2006 1:54:31 PM
^^ Well, I surely hope so...GO PACK! [Edited on August 11, 2006 at 1:56 PM. Reason : NCSU better win against App. State]
8/11/2006 1:55:40 PM
i would expect a win, but if the teams is thinking of this game like the people in this thread are thinking of this game.. we'll probably lose. while we should win, i doubt it'll be like our normal 40 point wins over the random i-aa schools we play.
8/11/2006 2:30:41 PM
so whats the deal with j hannah ?
8/11/2006 3:53:51 PM
i heard that FSU is now one of our rivals on NCAA 2007 for the X-Box 360, and Wake has now been dropped. is this true. if so, wow. i mean i didn't know we could be considered their rival yet, but we do have more ACC wins against them than Clemson does, and they're rivals on the NCAA games(mainly due to the father/son connection).
8/11/2006 5:11:00 PM
This is true, UNC, Clemson, and FSU are our rivals. And it sorta makes sense. We're the team that's beaten FSU the most and there's the Amato/Bowden connection. That totally overrides the Wake rivalry in football.
8/11/2006 6:55:15 PM
^ Bobby Bowden and some players pretty said as much. They said we've given them fits and battled them consistantly back and forth to consider us a rival

it is pointless to compare a team from 2001 with a 2006 team. That is like saying "we won and ACC championship in 79, so we should be able to win one now."It isn't the same fucking team. The same goes for App this year vs App last year. Yeah they are ranked #1 preseason. But that is a preseason ranking, which means absolutely shit. We will not play "the team that is 1-AA champs." Technically, yes, they are. But they lost key players that contributed significantly to that. And even if it was the same team, look at the record of last years team. They lost to the 1A team they played.Norris Notebook day 5http://www.gopack.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=41956&SPID=3730&DB_OEM_ID=9200&ATCLID=537475[Edited on August 12, 2006 at 11:40 AM. Reason : ]

^I was simply replying mainly to the posts saying that ASU has no chance.ASU lost to LSU 24-0 the same LSU that beat Miami 41-3.And for the record in 2000 ASU beat WAKE FOREST, a Division 1-A team at Wake, 20-16. That ASU team went 8-3 that year so why couldn't the 2006 ASU team be that good as well?[Edited on August 12, 2006 at 12:01 PM. Reason : 2000]

they could.we could very easily not show up and them be well prepared and they could win. But the chances of everything working out perfectly for them are small.

If you saw the statistics from the scrimmage today, I have some worries.Stone's 9/20 with 2 TD's and 1 INT(against 2nd-D) doesn't look promising. And our running game is either REALLY strong or our D is in trouble. Both Brown and Baker had over 100 yards on less than 12 carries each(11 for one, 8 for the other).
