Really? My remote is simple, click to open shutter, click to shut.

Cody, if it's the wireless, I <b>think</b> you can set the shutter to bulb and hold down the release. I've got both the cable and the wireless remote, and the cable works better for me.nm...I've got the RC1.[Edited on July 3, 2009 at 11:54 AM. Reason : ]

i guess i'll go ahead and be the first one to post July 4th pictures... i'm sure everyone has some. i ended up getting a cable release instead of trying to shoot with the remote; it was an excellent decision as the thing was super easy to use. for my first fireworks shoot, i was decently pleased with the results. i wish i could see more foreground, though.sunset from our vantage point in Bensonfireworksi like this one because it looks like an angry, mustached asian firework then we made our escape...]

Does anyone know if an sb600 can slave with the novatron 250 studio lights? I have an sb800 that will but unfortunately I won't very soon.

^^ some nice ones, man.I straight up forgot to pack my tripod, so I stuck with shorter long exposures and hoped for the best. these are from the fireworks show at lake Norman. From my dock I could see about 5 or 6 different places shooting them off. I've never seen so many boats on the lake at once. Working on stitching a panorama.one we lit off ourselves, taken with the 35mm

No, just straight up handheld, manual focus, 2", f/16 for most. The keeper rate was low . I was propping the camera up when I could for other stuff. I've been poking around on flickr and I've seen some nice faster shutter pictures - but generally at nicer fireworks shows.trying to get Hugin to work on a pano but it threw an error when I went to save it.
7/6/2009 12:05:22 AM
cool man. that's impressive stuff for a 2" hand held shutter! i think i shot most, if not all, of my shots around f/11. since i had a tripod, i just left it on ISO100 and used the cable release on bulb setting for the shutter.[Edited on July 6, 2009 at 12:08 AM. Reason : " not ' ]

It's actually the novatron 240 and it has a slave already I just need something to trigger it. I have a d40 so the on camera flash will not work, sadly. Someone said I could get a sb600 and a slave??I'm looking for cheap but I want it to work as well.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/601729-REG/Impact_POWERSYNC10_T_PowerSync10_AC_DC_Radio_Transmitter.htmlWill this trigger the strobes?
7/7/2009 11:37:43 AM
why won't the on-camera flash work? is it an IR trigger? can't you just get a $20 optical trigger?
7/7/2009 1:52:46 PM
She doesn't seem to have any idea what she's talking about. If the strobes are capable of serving as an optical slave then you can trigger it with any flash as long as it is nearby and in the line of sight. This can be tricky and very limiting. If the strobes do not have this capability then you need to invest in some pc cables and jacks, or some radio or ir triggers. The transmitter doesn't work if there is nothing to transmit to, by the way (read: receiver). Do a little bit of research on your gear and figure out what it can/cannot do.
7/7/2009 5:41:28 PM
Well it has an infrared receiver. The sb800 can trigger the strobes wirelessly. I was told the sb600 cannot unless it has SOMETHING else but I can't remember what. I was also told, or read rather, that only the d70 and d200 can trigger the strobes with the on camera flash. I have the d40. Someone in the strobist flickr group said I could buy a cybersync which I put on my hotshoe to trigger them.
7/7/2009 5:55:17 PM
The link you posted above is a radio transmitter, dear. That will do you no good if your flash has an ir receiver. The sb600 cannot act as a master, the sb800 can. This isn't that difficult. Google would solve all of your problems, as well as reading your user manuals.
7/7/2009 7:02:34 PM
what are you shooting? a cable could be the easiest solution.you can use a pc sync cable, but the d40 doesnt have a pc jack, so you'll need a hotshoe adapter. Everything you need to know about this is on Strobist.or you could buy an optical trigger that will trigger the strobe when it sees a flash. as long as you can disable preflash (redeye) you'll only need the receiver. these can plug into a jack on the strobe, or act as a hotshoe.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&shs=optical+slave&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=jsp%2Fproductlist.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=submityou can only send master IR signals from an SB800/900 or a body with IR out. or an RF hotshoe adapter but those seem to cost a lot.you can get a radio transmitter and receiver, cheap or expensive, you get what you pay for, but how much do you need?$40: cactus triggers - (aka "ebay triggers")http://www.gadgetinfinity.com/product.php?productid=16766$130 (alienbees cybersyncs Rx & tx)$340 (2 pocket wizards plusII)I don't know if that helps, and I don't know if it's all right, but it's what I remember from looking into it.
7/7/2009 7:44:05 PM
From what I've read and have been told it sounded like all I needed was the radio transmitter since there's a receiver on the power box that the strobes are plugged into. Do I need to get a receiver as well??I was hoping I could avoid a cable so there would be less chance of tripping, getting tangled, etc.So crap, does anyone know if the novatron 240 can receive radio signal? I know it has an ir receiver but don't know otherwise... I'll google it. But it sounds like the optical trigger is my best bet?? [Edited on July 7, 2009 at 8:16 PM. Reason : ugh]
7/7/2009 8:13:50 PM
you have this?http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/241728-REG/Novatron_NV240D_V240_Watt_Second_Power_Pack.htmlthere is no receiver on that, unless there's something else you have and aren't mentioning. syncs with just a "household" jack. (standard extension cords fit that, which is nice. and cheap.)
7/7/2009 8:29:17 PM
It's that but the older version and it has an infrared receiver for sure. I used the sb800 without problem but I dont have that flash anymore so I'm looking for an alternative.Could I get an optical trigger and NOT need an external flash on my camera? Could I just slip the trigger on the hot shoe and go? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/109466-REG/Kaiser_201501_Hot_Shoe_Flash_Slave.htmlEDIT: Actually that has really bad reviews. Should I just buy a radio receiver? Do I have to buy two if I have two lights or does it plug into the power box?? Like thishttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/469181-REG/Impact_AC_RSS16K_AC_16_Channel_Radio.html#features Or should I just freaking buy a cable? Likethishttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/335659-REG/Hama_HA_6946_Sub_Mini_to_Male.html#featuresand thishttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/37086-REG/Nikon_3066_AS_15_Sync_Terminal_Adapter.html ???Except I looked and there's no place for me to plug the chord in in the power box! 7/7/2009 8:31:46 PM
It looks like this except where the chord is plugged in is an infrared receiver, I don't think it can be removed.EDIT: Ok it can be removed! Now would that be a household to PC plug for that hotshoe adapter I posted??[Edited on July 7, 2009 at 9:06 PM. Reason : omg]
7/7/2009 8:57:21 PM
that CORD with the coils is a pc-to-household CORD.the thing you posted two posts up is an optical trigger that IS a hotshoe, so hotshoe flashes go on it, and it is the receiver, it catches the flash. you ought to be able to use your pop up flash to trigger it. but it has the same drawbacks that Ronny mentioned for IR - it has to be able to see the flash.you want one that has a household plug:http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/273332-REG/Wein_W940050D_L8D_Micro_Slave.htmlyour strobe setup triggers both of the heads from the box, so you only need one receiver for both of those lights.what are you planning on using this for, again?
7/7/2009 9:24:02 PM
I found this cablehttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/38496-REG/Novatron_NMI001_15_Straight_Sync_Cord.html#accessoriesAnd this adapterhttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/37086-REG/Nikon_3066_AS_15_Sync_Terminal_Adapter.htmlIt seems to be the cheapest most reliable option at this point. Is it right?I am borrowing a small studio set up to play around with. A friend is letting me shoot her this Friday but the person I am borrowing the sb800 from needed it at the same time. So I was looking for a cheap option I can use in the mean time to play around and LEARN lighting because it's important.Oh and I have a slave, an infrared one, I just need a trigger!! So I'm opting for the cable at this point even though it's not wireless like I had hoped it is reliable and cheap.[Edited on July 7, 2009 at 9:29 PM. Reason : h,]

that should work, and at least the hotshoe-to-pc could be useful in other situations.but really if you need it for this weekend, just go to a local camera shop and tell them what you have and they should get you going.

We just did a class assignment about making a 'reasonable' wish list and mine ended up equaling 1.5 million in gear, staff and studio space. Apparently I went 1.4 million above the budget of the next closest classmates list. LOL The average was 12k with 3k being the min and 93k being the max. The funny thing is that my instructors nor my friends weren't that surprised for it being my list and all...

http://dvice.com/archives/2009/07/mit-developing.phpMIT developing fabrics capable of taking picturesWhat you see there is a cross-section of an "optoelectronic" fiber. It's a light-sensing strand MIT is developing that it says could capture an image. Led by Associate Professor Yoel Fink of MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the research is still far from yielding any real-world applications, but the project just hit a milestone, namely using the fabric to take a rough snap of a smiley face.In the future, the group can see the fibers used in multiple ways, including being weaved into a soldier's garment. Since the fibers can capture an image, he could observe his surroundings through a heads-up camera feed instead of having to swivel around. The fibers also one-up cameras as they have the potential to be far more durable. "We are saying, 'instead of a tiny, sensitive object [for capturing images], let's construct a large, distributed system,'" Fink told MIT News, "While the current version of these fabrics can only image nearby objects, it can still see much farther than most shirts can."Well, sci-fi-ish project or not, he's got a point there.http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2009/flexible-1-enlarged.jpg
