The center backs blew that one for us. I think we will still get there, but it is getting tougher. We really need to win the next one. I never would have thought that we would only get 1 point out of the Mexico and Costa Rica games. We needed at least 4 to make it simple.

As for the AFC, Japan and Iran are in the World Cup. The AFC teams that still have a mathematical chance at playing CONCACAF 4 in a playoff are...

Besler or Gonzalez have to play. Arena got unlucky that Brooks and Yedlin are out but still. I'll bet Beasley and Omar play Tuesday. Cameron is usually better but again, something that JK was killed for - playing guys out of position compared to their club position - Arena gets a pass on. Cameron plays DM at Stoke.

^^I hope we get a top 3 finish and we don't have to resort to the playoff like Mexico did last cycle. China is a long shot. They can only tie for 3rd in their group if the correct teams win and it will take a serious blowout victory to turn that -3 goal differential into a positive one that gets them a tiebreaker. The run to the AFC playoff and the intercontinental playoff is very interesting right now.

Assume Panama beats Trinidad, that'll put them on 10. Honduras and the U.S. both 8. They can manage with a draw, but a loss there will be pretty bad.

This is good enough for now. Costa Rica still hasn't sealed a top 3 spot. If USA and Honduras win out we can tie Costa Rica in points if they lose out which means they may miss the World Cup. We should almost be a lock for the playoff, if we beat Panama and Costa Rica wins at home in their next game vs Honduras to seal their spot. Honduras is -7 and we are +1 goal differential.

Right now the odds are pretty high that it will be Panama/USA vs Syria/Australia unless Honduras pulls off an upset at Costa Rica and makes this more confusing.

I don't get what you're saying. Panama has 10 so a tie would give us 13 and +7 goal difference over them so it seems it would have been better for them to play an unqualified Costa Rica. Panama has to beat Costa Rica by 8 goals for any chance of us being 5th with a draw.

This outcome hurts us because it gives us less chance to be top 4 with a loss. (Costa rica has qualified and are now less likely to beat panama)

If Honduras won, the chance of Panama beating Costa Rica by 8 (which is what they would have to do) would essentially have been 0. The Costa Rica tie just qualified them for the world cup which means they no longer need to play hard against Panama.
