Its not really that improbable for someone to go their entire life without having a royal. What are the odds for a royal, like 1 in 649,739? (according to teh internets)For something thats that rare to become a statistically improbable event youd need at least like a 6.5 million hand sample set.im on the upside of the distrobution, having had 4.ive logged close to 500,000.now, saying youve never even seen one, like every ~65,000 hands you should see one.but i dont know the combinatorial distrobutions involved in that hwoever, so it could be lower... or soemthing, i dont know.

I would probably be worried someone else was on a flush draw. Even if it wasn't A high, that's two of yours outs down the drain. Although, you did have some pretty nice pot odds and an inside straight draw too, so I see nothing wrong with that play. Now Hish on the otherhand.......
11/1/2006 10:10:53 PM
i know...im terrible...i never make the right play, or move.
11/1/2006 10:16:58 PM
What exactly did you put him on?

11/2/2006 2:50:17 AM
11/2/2006 7:18:23 AM
moe,I don't hate that play in a tournament. I mean, you're getting about 3.7 to 1 on your money and you have the straight draw and flush draw, giving you 14 outs. That means you've got about a 51% chance of making either a straight or a flush (assuming no one's holding your outs). Even with only the flush draw, (9 outs) you've got a 35% chance or 2.9 against, still enough to justify a call even if you're missing some outs and there's always the chance that you'll make your hand and still lose.To me, I guess it depends on how deep the stacks were. Were you sitting on an average stack and needed to make a move?
11/2/2006 7:43:51 AM
11/2/2006 7:47:51 AM
^Well, pilgrim, you're probably right, because you play to win every tournament you're in. A lot of times I play to cash, so it makes a difference. I mean, I don't make that play and possibly go broke when we're 2 spots from the bubble when I could easily coast into a cash.I know you're supposed to play to win, but sometimes I just want to make my money back first, then attack. It is players like me that make it easier for players like you to steal and bluff near the bubble.
11/2/2006 8:06:15 AM
Why it is necessary is that:1.) in an online structure, the play is abreviated to a point where if you pass on this hugely + gamble, you may not get a better spot to stick it in before you're blinded to nothing.2.) you pass up so much equity by folding, and at this stage, cEV is very important. at 100/200 level, you're looking to gear up. remember, the later the tournament goes, the less $EV the chips are worth3.) this is Dam Theory in action
11/2/2006 8:18:40 AM
Nice analogy
11/2/2006 8:29:42 AM
Yeah, its a personal preference thing really. I mean, looking at it as an investor, REALLY close to the bubble I can take risk and increase my EV, but the spread has a -100% in it as opposed to a neutral EV (or slightly negative EV) of folding the hand in order to ensure a +5% or something without actually eliminating the possibilities of the +$Niger%
11/2/2006 8:30:28 AM
I used to play more of a tight game designed to make the money consistently but I wasn't winning anything. When I started playing more hands and gambling more I found that not only did I start winning more but I also was able to play a higher number of tourneys with the ones I spent the most time on being ones that I had a bunch of chips. It's just more fun.
