That is why you should have an assistant or 2nd photographer shooting with you when doing weddings. When I do weddings with my friend, one of us always has a look out on our equipment. I went to a friend's wedding two years ago and the photog there had three camera's (30d's) and all geared out on top of a table next to the buffet line. He'd just leave it wide open.

Such a rad building.

True indeed.

This pic sucks but it scared the shit out of me. I was hoping to capture some lightning hitting the top of the mountain in the distance, but it ended up hitting just behind the tree, spewing out sparks all over the place... very loud!!![Edited on June 9, 2009 at 10:35 PM. Reason : .]
6/9/2009 10:33:02 PM
^ That picture is awesome. the sparks behind the tree and the reflection of the bolt on the car. how long was the exposure? You must be quick on the trigger
6/9/2009 10:34:54 PM
wow great timing
6/9/2009 10:40:41 PM
I'd almost expect squeezing of the shot was just a reaction to the bolt.
6/9/2009 10:41:42 PM
i'd guess a 1/3 to 1/2 a second. you can clearly see motion on the truck on the road, and the sparks are bouncing off the ground.

God damn that is an awesome shot! Love the reflection and the sparks!
6/9/2009 11:06:21 PM
that is a fucking SWEET shot. I was thinking earlier while I was at work that I wished I had my camera so I could start to attempt some lightning shots. That one is just ridiculous!

Any tips for someone who is left eye dominant and shooting. I keep finding my face and right hand all smashed together. I've tried shooting with the right eye but it doesn't feel very comfortable.Anyone have any ideas?
6/11/2009 8:54:18 PM
^I sight with my left eye also, and even on the small body of the d40, it doesn't cause me problems. I smudge my nose on the screen though. Not that that's helpful, but I don't think it's that weird.Wikipedia claims 2/3 of people are right-eye dominant...
6/11/2009 9:32:24 PM
^(12x) Fucking sweet capture

Very cool lightning shot. I just got a bunch myself...I'm down in Charleston and we've had some crazy lightning storms come through the past two nights.Unfortunately last night I had to run downstairs and grab my tripod, which I left in my car. By the time I got back up here the lightning had essentially passed. Not wanting to make the same mistake twice I was quick on the draw tonight and I think I got some decent (but nowhere near 'amazing') quality -- just some cool shots for memories. I'll post them soon.
6/11/2009 10:40:57 PM
Charleston Harbor just before 9pm this evening. I'll post some more lightning shots later.

That is from my Nikon D40, shutter priority at 6sec, camera chose F/9, ISO200. I also splurged $15 when I bought the camera and got the remote clicker, which makes lightning shots pretty easy.It went something like this...Lovely bride: "Charles, it's going to storm, grab the camera!!!"*grabs camera and tripod, runs out to balcony*"Holy crap that looks nice"I set it up, fired off a few shots to check out the view, then just clicked the remote clicker continuously for awhile. It is interesting to watch the clouds and cars move as I flip through the photos....you can watch the stormfront come in, and watch it get progressively darker. This was my first time really playing with shooting lightning, and I learned a lot. If you leave the shutter open really long (30sec+) you have a higher probability of catching some lightning. On the other hand, if the lightning storm is intense, this will probably overexpose (even at 11pm!) the shot.On the other hand if you have the shutter open a short amount of time (defined by me as 6sec or less), you'll have nice dark photos and bright lightning, but chances are the biggest lightning ever will strike between photos...It can be a fine (and frustrating) balance. Each time I would move to a different location, look at a shot on the LCD, or fiddle with settings, a fantastic bolt of lightning would strike right in front of me.
6/12/2009 12:02:32 AM
The best of my lightning shots from tonight. I probably took 200+ shots until my battery died (didn't charge it inbetween shooting earlier today and tonight).Basically it was a bunch of this:*set up camera**click*...wait a bit...*click*...wait a bit...etc.Just a bunch of hoping that I got lucky.

just looking at beginning. but looking at a d60 or a d5000.would like something that will be easy enough to use to get into, but something advanced enough that in a few weeks/months i dont look back and wish for something more.can anyone offer advice on them?
6/12/2009 1:36:09 PM
^x5I'm just a few islands south of you and that was pretty intense last night. The rain wasn't bad, which left good conditions for getting some of those shots. Unfortunately for me, it was raining just enough to make me not wanna go out, and by the time I did decide to go out, all the storm was coming from a direction that I just could not find a nice, clear shot. Fuckin' live oaks and palmettos all over the damn place.

@grimx I just did a quick price check:d40: $449d60: $449 (newegg)d5000: $729 (newegg)there doesn't seem to be much the d5000 adds to justify the price difference (the tilt screen doesn't impress me)go for the d60. note though that these bodies don't have a focus motor in them and won't be able to autofocus any lenses that aren't labeled AF-S (nikon). So if you plan on getting a full complement of lenses, you might ultimately save money getting something like a d90 ($1130 kit), then buying lenses which in some/most cases are less expensive.you should also go to a store and try holding the cameras. Some people think the d40/d60 is too small. My mom has a Canon 40D and she sometimes complains about the size.@Wintermute I'm waiting on a lens, too: 35mm f/1.8 af-s from Amazon. Seems like around a 4-6 week wait. I'll be sure to post when I get it, and I hope that's before my kid's birthday![Edited on June 12, 2009 at 9:47 PM. Reason : ..]

6/15/2009 11:32:55 AM
i'm annoyed by the term kiwi crop. it was my way of filling the frame while cutting out as little as possble without moving or zooming.^^,^my camera was starting to give way. had damage protection on it. Worked there so knew that if they could fix it they would... and they would do a bad job of it. and i would end up having to get them to fix more than what i asked for. so i finished the job. slightly immoral.[Edited on June 15, 2009 at 11:39 AM. 6/15/2009 1:54:43 PM
I actually bought my 30D from someone, on craigslist, who was getting shipped to Iraq. After speaking to some people about it, he decided it was not a good idea for him to bring an expensive camera, at that time, and have it ruined by dust and sand.It lasted a long time but unfortunely died on me and needs repair. But got un early father's day gift a couple weeks ago, a 50D. Really happy with it so far. Haven't had a chance to really shoot a whole lot with it but the LCD is is huge and clear. Plus there is a lot of new options that I need to read up on and figure out.
