accepting the program is trash is how you become trashvirginia hadnt been worth a shit since ralph sampson and no that one leitao fluke year doesnt count. guess they shouldve just given up?fuck, we didnt accept being a mediocre football school when the best coach in our history is dick sheridan. losing @ wake - a travesty under tom obrien. A OK with mark gottfried
2/13/2015 8:24:19 PM
Yeah but we lost all (but 1) of the games that make it such a high SOS. I guess I'm just not willing to accept mediocrity like doss. The discrepancy between recruiting classes and results is my issue. Could you imagine what Tony Bennett could do with our classes?
2/13/2015 8:30:30 PM
Have them stand around for 30 seconds every possession?

tony bennett would go crazy coaching some of our guys

^Exactly how old are you? Check Herb's inherited roster for Browns, Woods, CJLs, etc.His last five years were as good or better than what Gott has done. And Gott has had more talent.
2/13/2015 11:51:05 PM
That's the thing, nobody is saying that. It's a fucking straw man. Of fucking course Gott has done things. That being said, there's shit happening in the games that are systemic. We basketball watchers have serious issue with the inanimate fucktard offense and complete lack of defense. Fucking shit if I have to again watch Turner lag his guy to give up a back breaker three I'm gonna puke.

can't wait til we run off another coach to be the laughingstock in the media again. I'm sure Archie is just dying to come coach at a school that has wanted to run off every football, basketball, and baseball coach we have had in the past 20 years.

Yea this is stupid, let's talk when he's missed a couple NCAA tourneys.

Tony BennetIf you have no ability to evaluate the talent of someone, then sure, you follow idiotic rules such as give someone XYZ time to prove themselves. You might not have that talent, but I sure can tell that Gott will never ever get close to what we want. You shouldn't project your own deficiencies onto others.

perhaps gottfried's most impressive win to date. on the road vs top 10 team that appeared to be a matchup nightmare. not to mention we were in the midst of a brutal stretch - losing 5 of 6 prior to this.

He played Freeman during some of our recent losses too. He was non-existent. Also I heard Tony and Gary talking (before the game) about how Washington stepped up against big time competition. For example he had his double double and a few other double digit scoring games against ND, UVA, UNC and Cincy. My wild guess is there was something non-basketball related that got him benched for a little bit. Or maybe just showing up late to a practice or something.
2/14/2015 6:58:24 PM
^in the postgame gott said it was just based off matchups and he thought freeman would be more effective. state had the highest points per possession of any louisville opponent all year also best offensive efficiency vs louisville this year... so much for that inanimate, fucktard offense i guess.
2/14/2015 7:16:11 PM
Boozie isn't wrong. Freeman is fundamentally our best big, and it's not even close. Good rebounder and great help-defender. He moves his feet so much better than Washington and Anya.Hopefully he gets more minutes and Washington gets less from here on out.
2/14/2015 8:34:25 PM
for sure...wish freeman could develop more of an offensive, post game. but he's definitely our best defensive big
2/14/2015 9:05:24 PM
Freeman probably knows what he is supposed to do more than the other bigs but that doesn't always translate on the court. None of our bigs are head and shoulders above the others, which is why we have to mix it up and play who's hot. Anya was the best big on the floor in the Jacksonville game. Washington was the best in the first UVA game. Abu was the best big in the Clemson game. Hell, Abu played better than Freeman today. He plays the hot hand. Still curious as to why Washington got benched for awhile though. I mean Dez Lee saw the floor before he did.Freeman had 3 rebounds today in 21 minutes. The only reason he looked good is he actually scored a couple buckets.Looking at the box score, both Anya and Abu had better games than Freeman. So his fundamentals seem a bit overhyped. He shoots 40% from the field as a big man. That's horrible.and while he is the leading rebounder per game, he got 32% of his total rebounds this season before Thanksgiving. No double digit rebounding games for him since Wake on December 6. Meanwhile in the last month, Abu had 12 boards in only 26 minutes one game, Anya had 10 boards today in 28 minutes and Washington had 10 in 24 minutes against UVA. Freeman hasn't been averaging quite as many minutes but it's because he hasn't produced on the court. The guy has regressed more than anyone else on the team since last year. I don't want to hate on him but he hasn't been very good since the beginning of the season[Edited on February 14, 2015 at 9:37 PM. Reason : 2 blocked shots in 425 minutes of basketball for our best defensive big man...]
2/14/2015 9:23:46 PM
Did you even watch the game? He completely shut one of the best bigs in the ACC down.[Edited on February 14, 2015 at 10:43 PM. Reason : Freeman could have went scoreless and still did great today]
2/14/2015 10:35:31 PM
Did you watch the game? We were rotating and doubling Harrell all game. All of the bigs were effective. You make it sound like Freeman just played him man to man all game.

2/15/2015 7:52:19 PM
Let's not pretend like for most of the ACC season Freeman wouldnt come into games and leave dudes wide open for 3s. That was his calling card for a long time right up there with blocked lay ups. He was a better match up for Harrell because Harrell hit like four 3s in the first game of the season and hasnt really been much of a threat from outside since.
2/15/2015 7:56:01 PM
You still lost 11 games. If that's the extent of Sendek's prosperity, I'm entirely confused why we hired him. Last I'll acknowledge that I'm not JB. Saw some of NC State's game yesterday and enjoyed Cat Barber's play.

^^I meant fundamentally on defense. All of our bigs struggle to score, unless Washington is shooting an 18 foot jumper. Freeman had some big put backs last night and is the least turnover prone, so at least he's not really hurting you on offense ... just not really helping. What Freeman gives you is quickness, rebounding, and high IQ on defense. It's not just the fact he played Harrell so well, but the fact he can basically guard anyone. There was a point in the first half around the 5:00 mark where Freeman and Cat got caught on a switch and Freeman had to guard Rozier -- arguably the best scoring guard in the ACC. He easily mirrored his movements through the lane, moved his feet, and forced Rozier into a really tough shot that he missed. It's something subtle, but it shows you his contributions go way beyond the stats.

I really like Washington shooting the ball, even from 3. But I cringe every time he gets the ball in the post. You know he's either going to (1) Turn it over (2) Force up a terrible shot, no matter how many people are guarding him. Occasionally those terrible shots go in though...I thought Anya was really good on the glass and on defense too. We know he can block shots, but he did a much better job on staying in control and not trying to block everything. Wish he would go up stronger on offense sometimes, because there's no one that can stop him when he goes up strong. Still a little too much finesse in his game, considering his size
