Anyone know a good photography class I could take in the Wilmington area? I've found this one http://www.ed2go.com/cgi-bin/oic3/newcrsdes.cgi?name=cfcc&course=eph&title=Secrets^of^Better^Photography offered through UNCW and CFCC online only. I'm skeptical about how good of a class you could run online.Or does anyone have any other ideas on how to learn more about photography; other than run rolls and rolls of film through.
5/30/2009 10:08:13 PM
^ well, the DSLR might kinda make that unnecessary. but i'd be interested in hearing some answers to your question, too.
5/30/2009 10:09:34 PM
Right now I've only have 2 film SLRs (one from my father, one from the father-in-law). Other than keeping a log of what setting I have for each picture it is very hard to figure out what works and what doesn't.
5/30/2009 10:15:25 PM
fair enough. i miss film sometimes.

Is this a good deal? usedCamera Canon EOS-1D Mark II- $460[Edited on May 30, 2009 at 10:37 PM. Reason : used]
5/30/2009 10:36:53 PM
Just give me the 460 bucks, its most likely a scam. 1D mkII's still go for about 1000-1300ish.
5/30/2009 10:52:29 PM
I'm sure my former roommate is gonna be THRILLED when he sees that the price of the 5d mark ii dropped $200 just a couple days after he bought one.[Edited on May 31, 2009 at 12:06 AM. Reason : math]

^ awesome
5/31/2009 9:11:23 PM
What sucks was that no one was at the Buttermilks. If I was there a couple weeks earlier I could have a got some awesome shots of world class climbers pulling scary highball stuff with white-capped peaks in the background.

^ on picasa? I got it to work by using the embed code they provide, pasting it, then grabbing the URL out of that.====So I need some recommendations on a bag. My tamrac adventure 6 shoulder bag is getting cramped. What I want is a bag that will carry all the photo gear I have (and room to grow) AND have room for personal stuff, too. Cost needs to be reasonable (~$100) I'm envisioning a day trip to the zoo or a museum where I carry all the camera stuff in one part and lunch and snacks and other junk in the other part.So far I've poked around on amazon and seen the Lowe slingshot 200 and the Kata 3N1-20 (or something). What would also be awesome is if the bag has some way to carry my tripod for day hikes, the tripod is a manfrotto 3001.anyone have suggestions? What stores have a good selection in Raleigh?[Edited on June 1, 2009 at 9:29 PM. Reason : ..][Edited on June 1, 2009 at 9:31 PM. Reason : ...]

i have a lowepro fastpack that i like it a lot. Its more secure and comfortable having two straps instead of the one like a slingshot, but it still has the side access like the slingshot.
6/1/2009 11:18:35 PM
$450 for a used nikon D60 kit in excellent condition? good/bad/average? at what price would it be a great deal?
6/2/2009 7:44:25 AM
I love my slingshot as it is easy to whip around from back to front and grab my camera. I also have a lowepro daypack which i use to carry my laptop and extra lenses. So for my over seas trip I could carry both at the same time, back pack and sling but in forward position, so that I have most of my gear on me. I then just used the sling for my walk around trips and swapped lenses when I knew what I was picturing at the hotel before I left. I lock up my excess equipment, including the day pack, in a pelican case at the hotel.

^ gotta get up earlier to make that shot stand out. And have something to focus the eye on, A deer drinking from the pond would be perfect, but good luck with that.
6/2/2009 5:39:09 PM
yeah, the picture definitely needs something else. and softer light would be good.pretty much what ^ said.

i've never done HDR before, and i'm not a huge fan of it unless it's really subtle (which is rare). anyway, i tried it out the other day... any thoughts?[Edited on June 4, 2009 at 2:27 PM. Reason : -when]
6/4/2009 2:13:26 PM
i like it you should post one of the same car in regular and i bet tons of detail is lost
6/4/2009 2:19:45 PM
^^ I have no idea what HDR is, but I like that shot
6/4/2009 2:26:20 PM
thanks. HDR stands for high dynamic range and it's basically a mesh of a bunch of shots at a range of exposures. this picture is 7 exposures blended together in photoshop.1/8s f/11 iso1001/10s f/11 iso1001/13s f/11 iso1001/15s f/11 iso1001/20s f/11 iso1001/25s f/11 iso1001/30s f/11 iso100http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imagingmost of the times the HDR stuff people make, i think, are gaudy and distracting.[Edited on June 4, 2009 at 2:33 PM. Reason : k]
6/4/2009 2:30:03 PM
Awesome, the detail is fantastic.
6/4/2009 3:13:40 PM
i think that you did not need to use nearly that many shots
6/4/2009 5:27:18 PM
go back on a mad cloudy day if possible.
6/4/2009 6:15:09 PM
^^ i probably could have, but i've read 7 is a pretty good number and i wanted a pretty dynamic range on the car. any reason for more or less exposures other than range? is detail affected? i honestly don't know much about it and it was my first attempt. ^yeah, more clouds/detail in the sky would be good. i did take the picture around 7:45PM to avoid harsh light, but the sky that night was pretty much a dud.
6/4/2009 7:15:49 PM
That there's some fabulous ferrous oxide.
6/4/2009 7:17:27 PM
^^ depends on what youre shooting. if there are trees that could sway in the breeze than keep your shot numbers low or else they wont perfectly match up...movement from camera or in photo is the only clarity concern i think?
6/5/2009 6:33:29 PM
^^^I like that. I've done HDR with 3 and 5 and haven't noticed too much of a difference. The only thing I would've changed is the power line and pole in the background, but you'd have to go in and clone that out of every exposure. Was in Asheville this week. Not enough time to do a lot of photo taking, but saw David Garibaldi last night.[Edited on June 5, 2009 at 6:44 PM. Reason : carrot]
