Only way I see that being plausible is if some stranger picks that up, sets it in front of the weird bag, near the mail box just to put it out of the way.... On the crowd side of the railing it could wrap it around the mail box, and destroy the funny bag.

Idk. Seems like that other bag would be a stretch.

Its also possible the bomb is not even there yet, and was put next to the railing/mailbox.

Rainbox 6 dropped in and Noonan used his gadgets to kill cell service.

Could have also been intentionally cut off so as to prevent subsequent cell-phone initiated explosions.

...yep, I've kinda had this feeling that this is gonna turn out to be RCIEDs from an Iraq and/or Afghanistan veteran, maybe with PTSD issues.

RCIED = RC IED = Remote Controlled IED

Thats what CNN was saying happened that they cut the towers off for awhile till everything was locked down.

That bag beside the mailbox is pretty accurate in terms of the size that would be needed with a pressure cooker like this.

that has a timer on it as well.

yeah they probably do not get the most expensive pressure cooker to make a bomb

yes, but i would think you could easily swap out a cell phone inside the main portion with some type of powder or liquid fuel underneath some shrapnel and when that circuit is triggered it would send the spark causing ignition.

the only problem with the cell phone theory is why you gonna carry a bomb around in a bag on you knowing that if someone dials the wrong number you will be blown to bits?

what if whoever had the number last has bad credit and has bill collectors calling?

Thank you for the huge-ass picture of a pressure cooker for those of us that have never been to a store, kitchen, kitchenstorewebsite, or attended a garage sale. Very helpful

^^ That's not exactly how it works. There's a little more to it than that.

^^^^Yeah there are a ton of ways to remotely command detonate a bomb...cell phone, walkie-talkie, garage door opener, long-range cordless telephone, etc...and all kinds of other trickier stuff that I won't talk about here.

^^^^^^ You're thinking a slow-cooker (a "crock-pot")...this is a pressure cooker. They make them where they're just a really stout cooking pot with a strong lid that locks on with lugs.

Like I said in an earlier post when we were talking about low vs high explosives, low explosives (black powder, etc) can be used for bombs, but they need to be confined (pipe bomb, pressure cooker, etc) to generate a violent explosion. That's the purpose of the pressure cooker.

Something that bothers me'after seeing more pictures... That scorch mark was far from when most of the carnage was. Wonder if its unrelated.

For some reason, I'm compelled to want to known what happened, now. Instead of waiting.

Looks exactly like the bag I pointed out in the pic. Must be the culprit.

I'll bet that left picture is the lid, with the ripped part just to the right of the hand being where one of the locking lugs was, and that fitting being the overpressure safety valve (which obviously wouldn't be able to vent anywhere near quickly enough to prevent rupturing due to a bomb--it's designed to cope with getting it too hot on a stove).

its the nature of the beast.

closure.

and yes, anything with an electric current from a battery that is triggered can essentially be used.

C4 gives a dark smoke plume shown here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwyniA5ryhY

Tannerite is much more readily available and has a white plume but takes some kind of impact to ignite
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBMEpzN0oy8

and finally TATP which is the most likely culprit

Think they'll ever find who did this? It'd be so easy to get away with it. But also, maybe hard with all the cameras these days

I'm sure they will. Somebody probably caught something. Everyone has phones with cameras on them. A big even like like, I doubt any second went undocumented.

How long did it take them to track down McVeigh? If I remember right, the best lead they had was the axle with a VIN on it. Other than that, they were scratching their heads.

I wonder if well learn about them after their suicide is revealed. Fucking coward!

Blown off limbs, shoes connected to feet resting behind a dead woman's head, blood everywhere, shit can't be unseen. I can't imagine actually being there and seeing it in the real. I'd probably would've broke down crying and been useless help. .

not to mention all the surveillance and security cameras in urban areas of large cities like Boston

or the fact that half the New England media had people in the area of the finish line

Conversely:

One could assume the perpetrator was well-aware of that when planning.

when i'm out in public, i assume 100% of what i do can/will be seen/recorded

only practical use for me is not to pick my nose or scratch my butt, but if i was gonna bomb a group of people, i'd either be pretty paranoid about that, or be crazy enough to not give a shit

I walk around Boston all the time with a backpack... its not uncommon. That being said, a regular size backpack couldn't have held the pressure cooker. I thought they mentioned it being a duffle bag now at this point, no?

Surreal situation. We weren't able to contact people from work at the race because they cut cell service for a while.

Myth. They did not cut any cell service off. Cellular networks were undated with request, ATT even eased up their wifi network access to help with the amount of call traffic.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/16/tech/social-media/social-media-boston-fakes/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Quote :
"Authorities shut down cell phone service
Reports flew around social media, mainly Twitter, on Monday that police in Boston had shut down cellular networks to prevent an attacker from using a cell phone to detonate another explosive. At least one media report quoted an unnamed source with information to that effect, before later recanting.

In truth, Boston's wireless network was simply overwhelmed with the volume of calls and other communications in the aftermath of the attack. Service was slow and spotty, but never shut down. Verizon and other mobile carriers confirmed they'd never been contacted by officials asking them to shut off service.

Soon after the bombings, mobile carriers were beefing up their networks in the Boston area. AT&T made its Wi-Fi system publicly available for free to help take the load off traditional phone lines."

"Lid of pressure cooker found on roof near scene of marathon bombings" now reported by CNN

I wonder if this has any relation to the "guy on the rooftop patio" (see page 6) or if the lid of the bomb was blown sky high and landed on a nearby rooftop

IIRC, about 90 minutes.

'93 WTC bombing took a few days.

Atlanta olympic bombing took a bit longer, b/c they ID'd the wrong guy at first.

9/11 was almost instantly identified, mainly b/c AQ was all over the place saying they did it.
