If you watched the first 3 episodes you should know who those guys are and why they are training.

Maybe I should, but sometimes its hard to understand their dialect and I missed their purpose of being there. Thanks for the help though!

I haven't read the books, so someone correct me if I'm wrong. There is a region of the continent (the extreme north) where the creatures/people that were in the first 5 min of episode 1 live. The wall is what separates that northern area from the rest of the land.
5/11/2011 3:43:45 PM
They are the nights watch, They guard the wall from stuff coming from the north. There are supernatural things up there but they mostly just guard from barbarians (they call them wildlings)It's like a fantasy version of Hadrian's Wall http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadrian%27s_Wall
5/11/2011 3:46:29 PM
That makes sense. And the blondes (hot girl and her brother) were exiled when their father was ousted, and the brother married off his sister in hopes of getting an army of Hungarians and taking kingdom back. Right?
5/11/2011 4:32:00 PM
not sure why you are comparing them to Hungarians (maybe you meant Mongolians as a comparison? I guess I always thought the whole Hungarian Calvary thing was later than feudal times) but yes. [Edited on May 11, 2011 at 4:35 PM. Reason : .]
5/11/2011 4:33:32 PM
lol I think he's combining Huns and Mongolians
5/11/2011 6:54:55 PM
Hungolians.

5/11/2011 7:21:28 PM
The Sam shit is something they could have pared out to make it a better show. Find some other way to convey what he did.
5/11/2011 7:54:25 PM
5/11/2011 10:19:36 PM
Sam definitely grows into his own as the books go on, don't count him out yet.I think I might have to start re-reading this series before the next book comes out...that and it'll be nice to be refreshed before season 2 pemieres

5/12/2011 9:36:31 AM
Can someone create a separate book thread?Something as simple as "he comes into his own throughout the books" is actually a spoiler. We know he will be around for a while now. Big spoiler? No. But still a spoiler.Let's try to keep this thread show only?
5/12/2011 9:40:33 AM
^^is this guy trolling or what?
5/12/2011 10:21:56 AM
^ Nope, just interested on getting opinions/info on what is happening by people who know more about the series then I do. Didnt watch the series as close as I should have, and started/stopped them several times so just wanted to make sure Im understanding them correctly

Oh I agree. I was just clarifying for him that if he thought they were actually some specific historic people he is mistaken.
5/12/2011 11:06:40 AM
ah yeah good point.
5/12/2011 11:07:02 AM
I mean I would hope that is understood by anyone who has watched more than a few minutes of the show But he did say he had only watched it intermittently so far.[Edited on May 12, 2011 at 11:08 AM. Reason : .]

a slightly edited, spoiler free description of the night's watch from the wikihistoryThe Night's Watch mans the Wall, a huge fortification built primarily of ice located in the far north of Westeros. The Wall is 300 miles long (100 leagues) and over 700 feet high. It extends from the Frostfangs mountain range in the west to the Bay of Seals in the east. According to Westerosi legend, it was built after the period known as the Long Night by the nearly mythical Brandon the Builder (who was a Stark) over 8,000 years prior to the present setting. The Wall was constructed after The Long Night in an attempt to forever shut out the inhabitants of the far north, who had overrun Westeros during that period, before being turned back by unknown forces. However, the severely reduced Night's Watch is limited to maintenance duty. The greatest antagonist to the Watch has been the Others, a race of mystical creatures not seen for thousands of years. For the vast majority of the Watch's recent history, they have served as a practical penal colony, filled with petty and violent criminals, political exiles, and vanquished nobility. Although their numbers are dwindling and the title of Brother of the Night's Watch no longer holds the honor and prestige it once did, the core of the Watch is still composed of capable and dedicated men. These men now serve the Watch and the Realm of Men by helping ensure that the barbaric human settlers of the areas north of the Wall, known as wildlings, are not allowed to raid south of the Wall.

Episode 4 was great, particularly the last few scenes. They nailed the Cat/Tyrion scene. Hope they continue with the rest of the tourney in episode 5 - more development for Gregor and the Hound!
5/12/2011 1:15:59 PM
They will definitely have more of the tourney to show. Some of the footage was used in early promos etc. I thought it was weird that they didn't include any in the Episode 5 preview but it will be in there. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

So I downloaded the ebooks of all 4. I finished 2 yesterday and went to pull up 3. For anyone who hasn't read the books each chapter is the name of a character and that chapter is from their perspective. Each time I've started one of the books I've scrolled through the chapter list just for fun.I did not realize that for some reason on the bookshelf of my ipad book 4 was listed before book 3. Lets just say I was really confused when I saw the names of each chapter for book 4.
5/13/2011 10:01:07 PM
yeah book four only has about half of the POVs that were intended. The other characters will show up in the fifth book.
5/14/2011 8:59:29 AM
bump for tonight.
5/15/2011 7:42:29 PM
looking forward to it as usual. Back to studying until then though...
5/15/2011 7:52:01 PM
one of the men in the dungeon (that arya overheard) looked like illyrio. was it that way in the books?also, renly + loras?
5/15/2011 9:46:11 PM
Yes in the books it was Varys and Illyrio talking, though they weren't called out by name since Arya didn't know them and it was her POV chapter. You just had to fill in the blanks based on description.Renly and Loras were also gay in the books. Just another thing that wasn't spelled out. Or maybe it was? I dono. A few passages hinted pretty strongly at it so I made the assumption at least. Surprised they dedicated an entire scene to it though here.Overall another solid episode.[Edited on May 15, 2011 at 10:00 PM. Reason : ]
5/15/2011 9:59:56 PM
i don't remember renly or loras being overtly gay in the books, but i can see why they would make the assumption.
5/15/2011 10:04:19 PM
GRRM confirmed it outside of the books so it removed any doubt I had but I remember my wife and I debating it after we read the books back when we did. They weren't overly gay acting or anything, it was just hinted through dialogue mainly.

Knight of the FlowersRainbow guardetc.
5/15/2011 10:12:59 PM
imo it wasn't that obvious in the first book, which the series is based from.
5/15/2011 10:14:48 PM
Agreed there
5/15/2011 10:17:44 PM
Still boring, haters?
5/15/2011 10:25:17 PM
arya absolutely steals every scene she is in.also, i thought the subtle gayness and banter between renly, loras, and littlefinger at the tournament was enough to establish loras and renly being gay. i don't think we needed arm pit shaving but w/e.also, i thought loras looked a little too skinny/frail to be a knight but it's not a very big deal.lysa arryn was pretty spot on.i think the show might work better when they focus on one or two plots rather than dancing between the wall, danerys, king's landing, winterfell, etc.poor jory.

Sweet, HBO Go will have the sixth and seventh episode next week. Gonna be ridiculous.
5/15/2011 10:58:53 PM
this episode was awesome. Action is picking up.

^^ to bad TWC doesn't carry HBOGO.
5/16/2011 12:08:12 AM
I've enjoyed most of the cast so far but I pictured the mountain and Bronn to be much larger than they are.[Edited on May 16, 2011 at 1:31 AM. Reason : and Theon is getting way too much screen time.]
5/16/2011 1:29:08 AM
I pictured Bronn a bit younger, but that's minor. And the guy playing the Mountain is 7 feet tall and 320 lbs.
5/16/2011 1:38:24 AM
NOT BIG ENOUGH!
5/16/2011 1:52:53 AM
haha yeah, I don't know that they could have found a better candidate for Gregor.
5/16/2011 7:49:20 AM
you'd think there might be some sort of law about a child actor sucking on a titty, but what do i know

5/16/2011 9:13:50 AM
That scene as a whole and the scene with Renly and Loras were my least favorite parts of the episode. And it had absolutely nothing to do with the content, I just felt they didn't add much to the episode and with limited time to cover lots of ground, that's an error you don't want to make.Overall though, as stated previously, I LOVED this episode. Thought it was awesome. I just thought that Theon's scene was pointless really (it didn't establish anything that we didn't already know about Theon) and Renly's and Loras' scene wasn't really needed either. The only thing I can think of with their scene is that they were trying to create some extra suspense tied to some certain future events I can't discuss here because of spoilers.[Edited on May 16, 2011 at 9:19 AM.
