I could maybe, MAYBE see using one if you're in a band that plays all-cover sets at a few bars every week and you need a ton of different sounds to be able to play a U2 song one minute and Sheryl Crow the next.

As a player, I personally find them to be tonally lifeless and just not fun to plug a guitar into, and I've never been to a show and seen a modeling amp keep up with a good tube amp.

The most recent model I actually plugged into was one of those new Fender Champs (I forget whether it's the Super XD or the Vibro XD that has amp models) and was thoroughly unimpressed. The last time one I used before that was whatever Line 6 had the same brain as the POD 2, and I didn't like it, either.

As a result of that, I have no idea what that kind of stuff sounds like when recording. I know my old Boss BR-8 has some built-in models that I've occasionally used for scratch tracks, but I wouldn't say they sound good, just passable for when I'm in a hurry or late at night when it's not possible to mic up and dial in an amp.

When I'm playing a show, I know what the music's like and what I want my sound to be, and the amp I use reflects that. A couple months back I filled in on a pair of shows with my friend's band, and I had only heard solo demos of the songs, not full band arrangements, so I took three amps to the first practice. I knew within twenty minutes which amp I'd be using for the gigs, but it was different from the one I expected to use going in.

Anyway, I'm likely to be biased in answering this question, because I'm big on quirks and playing into an amp's strengths versus trying to make one into a catch-all. I have a '66 Champ and a '71 Champ, and they sound completely different from one another, and I like that. I could probably coax some nice sounds out Amp Farm with some time in front of the computer, too, but I'd rather have a room full of neat old amps that all sound great and unique and be able to pick out a tone from my head and see it in that room instead of having to twiddle a scroll wheel for an hour to make the Tweed Deluxe model sound ratty like a Champ.
