Wouldn't there be huge implications on our solar system if a black hole was created close to Saturn?
5/10/2009 10:50:50 PM
yes, but they jumped out of our solar system prior to creating the BH

Wouldn't Spock from the future know everything that is going to happen and change as current timeline Spock changes etc.?

^ no

Saw this yesterday and was very pleasantly surprised. It definitely beat all of my expectations. I couldn't get over the number of "tributes" to the original series. The relationship between Spock and Uhura seemed a little out of place, though... but I reckon I could live with it. I will definitely be buying this on DVD when it comes out. For that matter, I find myself wanting a phaser toy now too. I do wonder where the franchise will go from here.A couple of questions...- Did the Klingon homeworld get destroyed? I don't recall. That would dramatically change the future, to be sure.- What was Nero doing for 25 years while he was waiting for old Spock to appear?- What was the significance of Nero having to try to get the Federation defense codes? It didn't seem like he needed it.- What was that thing was which accompanying Scotty?

As someone who as never a huge Trek fan, but enjoy sci-fi in general, I thought it was a great movie. The only things that bugged have already been brought up, like why in the hell couldn't Vulcan or Earth do anything to defend themselves from a giant mining ship drilling a hole into their core? Seemed that the drill could have been taken it out relatively easily by any sort of surface to air weapon.
5/11/2009 10:48:06 AM
I dont think vulcan has ever really had much in the way of defenses aside from Starfleet. As to why someone from Earth didn't just shoot down the drill, I imagine thats where the codes for Earth's defense grid came in handy. I doubt there's any privately owned weaponry capable of shooting it down.Of course I dont know why they dont just beam a big ass rock into the middle of it.[Edited on May 11, 2009 at 10:56 AM. - Did the Klingon homeworld get destroyed? I don't recall. That would dramatically change the future, to be sure.It was Vulcan first, Earth second. I don't think the Klingon planet got destroyed, but the ship did majorly fuck with a Klingon space fleet.- What was Nero doing for 25 years while he was waiting for old Spock to appear?Planning?- What was the significance of Nero having to try to get the Federation defense codes? It didn't seem like he needed it.So he could get so close to Earth to use the drill. I agree though, it should've been shot down immediately regardless.- What was that thing was which accompanying Scotty?Ugnaught What I'm wondering is why they couldn't just beam a capsule of the Red Matter onto the surface of the planet. A black hole will grow as long as there is shit to feed it, and I'm sure that even if it only ate half the planet...it ate half the planet. Mission accomplished.[Edited on May 11, 2009 at 11:04 AM. I don't think they killed the Klingon homeworld but as you said they took out a pretty significant chunck of their ships (47 or something like that) I don't know what the typical size of their fleet would be but that's got to be a pretty good chunk so it's gotta have some pretty big political ramification especially as everyone seems to figure out they were Romulans (basically they've gotta think the Romulans have some superweapon running around and that Star Fleet was somehow able to beat... that changes tensions slightly.)Likewise Star Fleet has had a pretty good chunk taken out of their fleet, 7 of their 8 newest ships around Vulcan and (I guess this is also my response to the "defenseless earth" questions) before Kirk took command they were en route to a rendezvous with "the fleet" (all star fleet ships in the area?) to make a stand against Nero before they got to Earth. We're not given any details but presumably it was similar to when the Borg attacked Earth and a chunk of their ships were massacred in some random system on the way to Earth which they showed briefly in TNG and in the flashback at the beginning of DS9.I thought the point of Nero trying to get the codes was that he presumably did, which is why it didnt seem like he needed to. I guess the defense net of Earth has something that actually could stop him, maybe planetary based weapons that are more powerful than anything they can fit on a Star Ship. That would explain the depth of Pike's injuries as well as Nero's delay in getting to Earth as well as its seeming defenselessness (long enough for a much slower Enterprise to meet up with the fleet somewhere on the way, or plan to at least).[Edited on May 11, 2009 at 11:17 AM. I'm assuming the brain worm things were the same ones Khan used in Star Trek II?They looked more like the bugs that were in one of the earlier TNG episodes. Can't remember the episode, but those bugs entered through the mouth and could control people. Its weird that in Star Trek II the worms entered through the ear and that they would change it to entering through the mouth.

that would mean that anytime someone asked a question he would tell the truth since the bug secretes a chemical that makes you willing to tell the truth.

Kickass movie.

Yes or NoDid they time travel through black holes?
5/11/2009 6:08:17 PM
yesI think that's why they still fired on the ship at the end.. to make sure that it was destroyed.Kinda silly, cos a black hole would rip a ship to shreds anyways
5/11/2009 6:16:08 PM
right but who knows what special properties red matter black holes have!
5/11/2009 6:30:12 PM
In Star Trek IV and I think in the series, going warp around the sun (because of its gravity) resulted in time travel. In the Trek universe, extreme gravity is a viable means of time travel...
5/11/2009 6:57:04 PM
Plz 2 have black hole with machine gun and kick some ass in the civil war!
5/11/2009 7:51:52 PM
Or in First Contact where the Borg magically time travel, then somehow the Enterprise can replicate it at the end.

TIME TRAVEL IS SO EASY BECAUSE IT HAS A HAPPY ENDING!

i mean you people are complaining of stretched physics when the premise of the show is a spaceship that routinely travels faster than light by warping the fabric of space?

WHO GIVES A FUCK?!?!?
5/11/2009 10:07:38 PM
^^ i don't think warp drives actually warp space...It creates a subspace bubble, and travels through subspace
5/11/2009 10:15:26 PM
I dont mean to get technical here.
5/11/2009 10:21:34 PM
^^Didn't Scotty say something about realizing that you can warp space?Professor Farnsworth came up with it first.

One of the best Trek films in years. The opening sequence was great, though I hated the bit about young Kirk stealing a vette and blasting the Beastie Boys. The bit from II about "You have been and always will be my friend" was a great addition.Get cranking on a sequel.
5/12/2009 1:09:47 AM
Not a bad movie. The last half of the movie was an action movie on autopilot, though -- no intellectually stimulating surprises. I can't really point to any message or characterization in the last half that would make the movie distinctly star trek.I guess the main point of the movie was to reintroduce kirk as the center of the star trek universe. He turned out much less douchey than I expected, but someone should tell him to stop doing that fucking pose where he lowers chin and looks upward to look ahead. If the next movie is like this one, I'll wait for the dvd/netflix.Props:uhuragreen chickmini skirts (they need to make a comeback in the modern workplace!)unprops:uhura banging sylar[Edited on May 12, 2009 at 1:34 AM. Spock died but because of the force Kirk is able to see him. That's how he directs him to Dagobah.

I don't know that they were members, but through the events of DS9 they certainly became close allies.
5/12/2009 8:07:12 AM
I doubt the klingons would ever join the federation as a member state. Also, if you remember in the "alternate" future of TNG, relations between the federation and the klingon empire had broken down. The war with the dominion would surely unite the klingons and the federation for a while, but eventually they'd need someone new to fight. I could see a possible future where the klingon empire invades and captures a weakened cardassian state, which causes animosity with the federation (much like what happened when the klingons invaded cardassia in ds9). The result would be a renewed cold war between the federation and the klingon empire. A strong klingon empire would be a threat to the Romulans as well, and I'm sure the Klingons would attack any remote Romulan colonies or deep space mining ships. The Federation and the Romulans would probably cooperate more. So it would make sense that Nero just hates klingons because he's had to deal with them in the future. Plus he blames the federation and spock for failing to save Romulus.

Say... I wonder what happened to Spock's whirlybird science ship? There's gotta be some great tech in it which could be reverse engineered and even further change the course of this timeline.
5/12/2009 8:49:15 PM
didnt he crash it into the mining ship, which caused to to make a blackhole but this time not time travel through it?
