FS: 86 Honda VF500 InterceptorSo I have told myself I was selling this for the past 4 yrs, only to not be able to let go. But now it is time I have owned it since '94 It is a 86 V4 500, 17k miles, red, white and blue ( what other color would a rice burner be?) It has a new front tire, as in no mileage, a rear tire with about 100 miles on it, new chain, new plugs, new battery, and all new fluids(actually I should say it will as I am doing them all this weekend) The bad, well there is really very little. It has been laid down once, by yours truely. It did very little damage scratched up some of the plastics and a little on the motor. This is a great first bike, or forever bike. It is more like a sport crusier than a pocket rocket. The V4 is a great engine, much better torque than any of the I4's. Will post pics up this weekend, after I wash it $1250
6/3/2005 3:03:20 PM
^ hehe, I would have loved it if you actually had sold it to me last semester. Well I love my honda.

gauging interest on my 1990 GS500: 14xxx miles on the body 54xx miles on the motorred and blacklaid down by yours truly but very minimal damage, new headlight ordered. no scratches in the paint from it (went down in grass). clean title, great to learn on, 50+mpg riding hard ON 87! $1500 as-is (completely rideable and will come with new headlight)$1700 with the new lens for tach, new bracket for tach/speedo, new plastic casing for tach/speedo/instrument lights.

If smoothcrim and crazybob would post some pics...I know both bikes fall into the upper limit of my price range, but I am in the market and would be interested.

Both of you guys, what are your insurance costs like? I'm very interested in both bikes
6/7/2005 11:10:12 AM
as you may know within the last 3 years I've totaled 2 brand new cars and my insurance is sky high. I also had a period of 6-8 months without any insurance (hurts your rate). that said, I only pay $600 a year for full coverage on my bike, theft, nature, etc.
6/7/2005 12:58:26 PM
My insurance was $125 a year on the VF500
6/7/2005 1:02:48 PM
I'll offer $600 for the CX500
6/7/2005 1:33:40 PM
I am in no rush to sell as I have another bike. My insurance on 600cc Honda Shadow 2000 year model for liability only is $130 a year. That's the only vehicle I have on that insurance plan.

6/7/2005 9:19:14 PM
Sorry if $600 seems like a lowball offer, but I looked the retail value up on KBB and it said $725 was the retail value of that bike.
6/7/2005 9:30:36 PM
I realize that, but given engine rebuild, new tire, and new paint I expect more.
6/7/2005 11:06:45 PM
btttany deals aroundi need to holler at smooth crim to see if he still has that bike...
6/18/2005 10:21:53 PM
^ i thought you had a bike that needs fixing?what year/make/model? what's wrong with it?
6/18/2005 10:43:59 PM
91 GS500apparentlya piston is slappingand its not really worth fixingi'll just buy a new(er) bikeand i'll prolly get like 40-60% of my initial investment back in the trade in, even with the slappy piston
6/18/2005 11:59:27 PM
how do u guys get such cheap rates with full coverage on bikes, are u on your parents plan?"progressive is charging me 400 for the year for liability only, although im covered if uninsured or underinsured drivers hit me etc..but they quoted about 5000 for complete coverage.. im 19 and only have one minor accident on my record and have been driving for 3 years
6/19/2005 12:37:33 AM
Must be the accident and the years driving. My wife is European and the faact that she had her license more than 5 years before she moved to the US was a big factor in her rates.I am betting that your driving for less than 5 years and the fact that you have had an accident....PLUS you on a motorcycle...they are just counting the days till that claim comes in.Not to say you will file a claim but that is probably what they are thinking.
6/19/2005 7:01:58 AM
it also will probably depend largely on the bikesome of the more popular bikes that are stolen a lot will have higher rates on theft coverage.
6/19/2005 9:46:20 AM
progressive quoted me 3300 for the honda cbr, clean record (atleast until last weekend )
6/19/2005 9:12:19 PM
^damn
6/19/2005 9:47:51 PM
but thats for full coverage with deductable thingy.

anyone still has a 250 or 500 ninja for sale?
6/26/2005 12:45:33 PM
I'd sell my 99 Ninja 500r for $2500 3600 miles
7/2/2005 6:20:17 PM
I'm 5'2" and female, and looking for a bike to ride around town on weekends (I'll have to keep it in Wilmington). I'm considering getting a Yamaha Virago 250 or something similar because I'll probably only ride 3-4 times a month, and it is much more affordable for that purpose ($3500 MSRP). I'll be getting a real job in a year, and could upgrade then if need be. Would this be a bad choice, and does anyone know of any used cruiser style 250s for sale?
7/5/2005 5:56:15 PM
a honda rebel would work too
7/5/2005 6:27:10 PM
^A coworker's dad owns a Yamaha dealership, and he claims he can get me a good deal. If that's the case, I'm going yamaha. If its the same sort of deal I can get elsewhere, I'm open to pretty much anything in that price range. The Rebel seems to be a bit smaller than the comparable Yamaha and Suzuki.
7/5/2005 6:42:54 PM
The Virago is not a bad starter bike if you like that style. Have you sat on one? How's the ergos? Can you flat-foot it? Are the bars comfortable? etc. I usually suggest Japanese & used for first bikes, but if you can get a good deal on a new yammie... Whatever you decide, take the MSF basic rider course.
7/6/2005 1:26:15 AM
buying a brand new cruiser so small probably isn't the best idea if you're planning on upgrading quickly just because the resale will be hurt because it isn't as flashy as a sport replica. something like a ninja 250 will have great resale because people want to learn on something cool looking
7/6/2005 2:10:03 AM
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/mcy/82603859.htmlThis one is in my price range. How easy/hard is it to get a used motorcycle loan from a bank for that low of an amount though?
7/6/2005 9:28:45 AM
don't get a loan for your first bike
7/6/2005 9:29:41 AM
i'm gonna stop by suzuki of durham on my way home today and see what's up. my hunt for a suitable used bike has been a failure. might have to just suck it up until the "selling" (winter) season starts again. sure would hate to miss a whole summer of riding
7/6/2005 2:18:30 PM
I just wish I could find a good 2000+ R6, 600RR, gsxr-600, or zx6rr for $3000 or less
7/6/2005 3:31:38 PM
^^i know right
7/6/2005 4:51:00 PM
^^good luck... i've been trying to do the same. bike prices have skyrocketed in the past year. i'll be damned if i'm going to pay 3k for a 7-10 yr. old sportbike.
7/6/2005 5:24:33 PM
haha, the insurance on my old 83 virago is $60 a year, i wish somebody would steal that bitch to make room in my driveway, i could't give it away, even though its a good daily commuter/beater, i haven't ridden it in a month
7/6/2005 5:31:59 PM
^want to sell it? i need something for a dirt cheap ugly as sin chopper/bobber project.went and looked at the suzuki sv650 and a kawasaki zzr600 today. can't really beat the sv650 for bang for your buck. sticker price just under 6k. gonna give them both some thought this week...
7/6/2005 9:08:56 PM
I'm lookin for something along the lines of a virago too. if anyone comes across anything, how bout givin me a shout
