ugh. Dropped my Droid X in my house this weekend and it landed face down. Screen didn't crack or anything but there are a ton of dead pixels on it now. Probably going to have to replace it; luckily I do have the warranty. Not sure if I'll get a refurb'd DX or what.

^^^I have been patiently waiting for S-OFF on my 3D since 6/22 heh.

HTC did release a statement last night saying that they're 'working diligently' on a solution.

Does anyone have any experience with the ViewSonic gTablet (as seen on http://sellout.woot.com/)? I broke down and got one and plan on putting cyanogenmod on it once I play with it a bit... I've got the 'need a tablet' bug

so...is gingerbread for the thunderbolt supposed to be released tomorrow? how does an update work...will it prompt me or do i have to manually update somehow?

also, i haven't rooted it, yet...will updating to gingerbread make it harder, easier, or have no effect whatsoever?

also also, is it generally accepted that the thunderbolt doesn't have an NFC chip and does that really matter?

I'd go with 0% chance of there being an update tomorrow. I'd just root now and install one of the custom roms and not worry about waiting for Verizon updates. Plus there's already gingerbread based roms available.

well, i was only waiting because i thought it'd be released tomorrow (not that i care one way or another...as my first smart phone, i'm still pretty bad with it)

i only really want to root it so i can use it as a mobile hotspot without paying extra for it...i see the icon for it on the phone and i was told that verizon offers a free trial of it, but i didn't want to activate it yet since i want to use it in a few weeks (assuming that the trial starts when you give it permission to, that is)

not sure what other advantages there are to rooting it

Droid X has been discontinued for about a month or longer, so you'll likely get a refurb...or you might get something newer, I'm not sure how that part works.

Interesting. This is the first time I've ever had to make a claim on a phone with the extended warranty. I was going to run by a Verizon store sometime this weekend, but should I be going through Asurion instead?

^ yeah, no doubt...but i plan on utilizing LTE when working away from home AND the office, as well as when i travel and don't have internet available (like in a couple of weeks when i'm at the beach)...if LTE is available (and even if it isn't, 3G will do), i'll tether my phone and use it as a wireless router, so it'll be plugged in (to my computer or to the wall charger)

Is your warranty through Asurion? I thought they were just insurance, but I could be mistaken.

Either way, you can ask bmel but I believe that all Verizon will do is dial Asurion's number for you. I did an insurance replacement of my device and I just talked to Asurion over the phone while in a Verizon store.

It's not all that bad as long as you're in a good signal area and not constantly downloading. Standby really doesn't seem to be any worse from the time that I've used it.

no...i'm not sure if they're even on the same towers, but even if they are, Sprint's 4G signal doesn't go as far as 3G (not sure if that's true for the other "4G" options out there)

The Samsung Infuse is a VERY nice phone but it's $200.

However, the HTC Inspire is a great phone for $100.

That's because wimax is crap and on a higher frequency which kills building penetration.

Coming from the same towers, Verizon's LTE "should" be a little better than EVDO Rev-A since it's a lower frequency. That's not to say you won't have a 3G tower closer to you though.

The Infuse is the nicest all around Android phone I've had experience with. I deal with quite a few of them for my job and our company has several (Evo 4G, Inspire, Atrix, Droid, Droid 2, Droid Incredible, Infuse, Fascinate, and Droid X). That phone is incredibly slick.

Just did my insurance claim with Asurion. No mention of a DX instead of the DX2. I will be pretty annoyed if a used DX is all I get for a $99 deductible...

They did that with the OG Droid. Ran out and started giving out Droid 2's. Had my radio crash a couple days later and had a warranty phone sent and of course it wasn't a Droid 2. A guy at AC who had placed a call the day before I called ended up with a Droid 2. Just my luck I guess.

Filed a claim yesterday because mine fell out of my pocket and in the toilet (yay!). Didn't know about this X2 switch. Got a brand new Droid X in sealed retail box this afternoon.

Sooooo, there's that.

Google Music will sync mp3s (actual files as well as playlists) between Windows and Android.

I think Amazon's Cloud MP3 app will do it as well. Google Music is getting mixed reviews and I have no idea if a solution other than your own VPS/Dropbox/Streaming hack was in place before either of these services.

Once you root your device you don't take any OTAs otherwise you're going to lose it.

so are these like security patches or could this actually be gingerbread?

thanks for the heads up...i would assume that you can always re-root it, but it generally just takes some time before the community gets around to making a new root?
