Having to plan a convention with a colleague (we're all volunteers) who seems to be systematically ignoring some pretty important instructions.
This is pretty much what our committee has had to deal with
Commitee: We need quotes from downtown hotels for block rates for 50 rooms the first weekend of October 2015
Dude: Here's the Marriot rate for the second weekend in Sept. at the rate we wanted.
Committee: Dude, we need the first weekend of October
Dude: Got it, the rate is $140 a night the second weekend of September at the Marriot
Committee: Come on man, we need the first weekend of October, if they can't do that talk to one of the other hotels downtown
Dude: (ignores us for a few months): I need to get this contract signed for the Marriot the first weekend of September if we want to lock in our rate.
Committee head sends him a nasty e-mail to fuck the Marriot: talk to the other hotels and look for something else that weekend.

Today, 2 months later:
Dude:I need to get this contract signed for the Marriot the first weekend of September if we want to lock in our rate.

At this point we're going to get fucked and need to reschedule everything else because he can't listen to simple instructions.

He got an email from me this morning since our comittee head is out of state dealing with death in the family.
In very polite terms I told him he has to have quotes from the 4-5 main downtown hotels by the end of the month or give someone else the project.
The 2014 convention is in Denver this year, and these have typically been thrown together very last minute. Our goal, since our Raleigh chapter is so active, was to have all the big stuff in stone when we got to Denver. So far we have a meeting space and without a hotel we can't even start to schedule speakers or sponsors.

Its not anymore. At the beginning it was a fairly big task since we were submitting an RFQ to the convention bureau (?) and they were going to pull together some packages for us to include room blocks, event spaces, meeting spaces and networking venues.
Everyone else has done their part to pull together the rest of that info on their own while we wait on the hotel info, so at this point the "project" has been whittled down to a few phone calls and follow up e-mails.

And normally this dude is on top of things and has done a lot for our local group in the past. However he seems to have his heart set on staying in the Mariot, refuses to call the Sheraton because he thought it was too shabby when he went, and left it to the bureau to contact the other hotels, all of which were given inaccurate information and rejected the RFQ or suggested dates outside of the ones we requested.

One of our PMs is a little too jumpy about our new customer and keeps trying to get us to contact people outside of our company outside of their normal working hours and to get stuff done within an hour of our office opening. The customer has their office personnel split across three or four time zones and usually takes half a day to get back to us.

It also appears our director has maybe oversold us to this new customer and we've gotten 17 sites assigned to us in four business days when the max we were supposed to get hit with in a week was 10 (should mention this is a small company). I hope we weren't planning on doing further business with our other customers!

I'm developing and trying to move toward 'big picture' in my personal career growth (i.e. actually being the manager I'm supposed to be)....everyone else in my branch is stuck in the details, the "muck & mire". For instance:

-VP (1 level of management above me) worrying me about hole centers on a shop-fab item. This turned into a multi-meeting, 30+ minute time investment.

- I have a draftsman (directly under me) who explains his component design methodology to me EVERY SINGLE TIME we discuss a new project.

Unfortunately I can't get away from it because the lack of true management is rampant. Everyone has grown accustomed to 'teamwork' to the point where many do others responsibilities in the sake of getting things done. If you argue, you're not being a team player

We have a vegan on our floor.

She also doesn't microwave. She'll microwave water in a Pyres dish and then she'll use some kind of aluminum Chinese steaming thingy to warm up her food. Everytime I'm in the breakroom, I get this alot "Wow you eat all that?" or she'd gasp, "that's a big chicken."

No shit, you're 90lbs.

Yes, the vast majority are useless. It's just a job interview, not a source of productive work.

In fact, most employees below the age of 25 are useless.

Dude from above has been avoiding emails, calls and texts with everyone.

I told Mr. committee chair today to just ask him for the contact info for everyone he's been dealing with so we can hand this project to someone else, like me.

Also, the president of our National Non-Profit called me last week and asked if I wanted a seat on the board as treasurer since someone from the board abruptly resigned, and the treasurer is also resigning after September. I turned him down. He then asked if I thought Dude would be a good treasurer?

I've never had a female boss before, and I hope I never will. I can't imagine what that would be like. There just aren't many of them in the Sciences. But the ones that are, do act a lot like men. They have to be assertive and strong...'bitch' and 'batshit crazy' is what I hear. You have to be, it's a male dominated field.

^^My department has a sub-department that is headed by an assistant manager who is a female but reports to my boss, who is the department manager. My boss is very cool and laid back as long as we are getting shit done. The assistant manager (who is not over us) is super controlling, nosy, and pretty much a bitch which causes constant problems for her team and can annoy the shit out of us. Personally I get along with her fine, but professionally she is the single worst thing in our whole department.

My workplace annoyance for the day is when two members of the crew decide to roll out for lunch on Franklin Street together and not even fucking say anything. I don't even care if they don't ask the rest of us but we provide on-call support so if folks go out, they need to let the rest of the team know so we can plan around our lunches around that shit. We do it all the time and take turns leaving a person or two behind, but they just snuck the fuck out and left the rest of us hanging.

Today's workplace annoyance is time zones.

I basically just sat around waiting for 11 AM, when California vendors open so I could make all the calls I needed to.

When I saw my lil' bit I have to say when I answer the phone, and then the client says, "Yeah I want to talk to someone in service.". I AM SERVICE......and you would know that if you listened to what I said when I answered the phone.

That, and the fact that my manager quit during our first week of training. But I like the new manager a lot and I LOVE my new job.

Fucking coworker who is habitually late (been happening off and on for a year!) doesn't even bother to let anybody know what is up until after 10 am, when he is supposed to be in at 8. No calls, email or anything. Then he messages around 10 am to say he's going to work at a remote location (one floor below us) and not come by the office to check in or let us know he's in and to not contact the boss (who is off today) and tell him. The rest of us are so fucking tired of this. We have already pushed his scheduled time back from originally 6:00 am at hiring to 7:00 and now 8:00 and he still is late sometimes by hours! Our boss is really laid back and as long as we make him look good and get shit done he doesn't really give a fuck. 99% of the time this is great. But when you get an irresponsible motherfucker who abuses that privilege it fucks it up for the rest of us.

He's now stonewalling us on a bunch of other shit too. If he was an employee I'd fire him, if he was a coworker, I'd have a sit down with his supervisor. Unfortunately he's a volunteer and otherwise active in our group with a lot of friends, so I've got to have a talk with Committee Head about how we can politely ask him to relinquish his responsibilities without pissing him off.

dude thinks it's a great idea to do a bunch of database calls, one by one, to pull data from a table for a list of items that he just queried. I suggested he just, you know, use one query to pull all that data in one fell swoop. Local asshole from my group says "hey man, don't tell the server guys how to implement their stuff! They know better than you, and that's not our job"

I, as politely as I could, replied, "fine, do it in the dumbest way possible, bring our application to a screeching halt, and I'll just file this in the "I fucking told you so' bin for when it happens."

considering that this functionality hasn't been implemented yet because we're still in the planning stage, no. We're talking lists on the order of 10k items, and users will hit this multiples times a day, often around the same time. I've already got a test scenario entered into QC to break this on the first go.

^holy shit.

We have a sign on our fridge that says something like "all items in fridge are personal items, do not take anything that isn't yours" but I have never had any issues with people taking food. And I've never heard of anybody doing that. There's like 10-15 people that use it, and I trust all of them.

It kinda blows my mind that people do that type of stuff.
