I cropped it like this last night but kinda liked the other one better. I wasn't sure?
5/13/2009 8:57:42 PM
^ i like that one much better...more focus on the fox...the blurred tree was a bit distracting
5/13/2009 9:15:32 PM
Well I managed to run three rolls of film between two different cameras and got a few good pics. Both cameras are older SLRs. One is full manual and the other will only adjust exposure. It is hard coming from digital P&S cameras to actually having to focus. I couldn't pass this one up. A double Kiwi crop

^ i really like the tree picture. the road that divides the foreground is a nice touch. the first one doesn't really do it for me though.Jvp7800, i like the cropped fox picture MUCH better. i don't think you've lost anything, and without the distracting tree, all my attention is on the fox. nicely done.]

Now you just have to get a 3 bird picture. We could make it a counting thread with odd angle birds.

Someone just gave me a Nikon N65 film SLR with two cheap tamron lenses. I was thinking of picking up a couple of Nikon prime lenses and building a darkroom in my house. Anyone built a darkroom before? How much do you think this will cost?[Edited on May 15, 2009 at 1:31 PM. Reason : x]
5/15/2009 1:31:31 PM
i don't know much about the cost, but i know when my high school got rid of theirs, they sold off their equipment for really cheap. if you can find some stuff like that, you might can save some money.
5/15/2009 1:35:59 PM
The biggest cost in terms of equipment is going to be the enlarger head, specially if you want a color head. Those are about 500-1000+ new and bulbs in those aren't cheap either. I'm sure you can find a used one for cheap like 100-200 bucks or something, but not sure where to find stuff like that. Even ebay doesn't have much listed on 35mm enlargers. Then you need equipment to process both film and paper, which can add another 100, chemicals, another 50-100. Gets more expensive if you want to process your own color neg or slide films. Then if you want to do color prints, that's just asking more pain and trouble.Honestly, if you want to do darkroom stuff, keep it simple and do b&w. Just let the pro photo labs handle your color film and prints. Even now RA-4 paper and printing is cheap for big labs.
5/16/2009 2:46:19 AM
Ya-I was planning on just doing B&W.

Ok, so I'm very new at all of this! Just got photoshop and opened a flickr account. I'm looking for ANY and ALL advice/recommendations. I have a nikon d40 and use a kit lens along with a 55-200mm zoom lens I got cheap. Advice/suggestions?[Edited on May 16, 2009 at 5:23 PM. Reason : .]

^^Awesome. Super sharp and colorful! Beware of the kiwi crop. Spring = flowers[Edited on May 17, 2009 at 3:35 PM. Reason : sigh]
5/17/2009 3:34:14 PM
I like the Nikon 55-200mm. Its much contrastier and maybe sharper than the 18-55mm.
5/18/2009 12:28:15 AM
Did any of you guys make it out to the Bain Project? If you don't know what I'm talking about here are some pics that others took: http://www.flickr.com/groups/thebainproject/pool/

^i can seriously tell the difference with a quick glace between the crappy 18-55mm and the 50mm 1.8d.Id like to replace this 18-55mm as soon as i get a job. I'll probably get the 35mm 1.8 AFS for $200 next.I want a new body, but it'd be illogical. the 18-55mm is def my bottleneck.
5/20/2009 2:29:25 PM

5/22/2009 7:37:58 AM
5/22/2009 11:18:53 AM
i like it, but i wish that photo was taken earlier in the morning or later in the day
5/22/2009 11:35:47 AM
There was a website (I forget the name now) that was selling refurbished d90s for $699, they went quickly it seems.
5/22/2009 11:37:19 AM
^^ same here. landscape pictures should be taken at dawn or dusk. no exceptions. you need softer light/shadows. these just don't do the grand canyon justice.fwiw, they were framed well.
5/22/2009 1:03:27 PM
anybody in here, or knows somebody, who shoots a mamiya 645af? I have an unused 210 f/4 i'm trying to sell .yes i could have put it in classifieds. but i'd also be cool to know who shoots Medium Format.
5/22/2009 1:47:16 PM
i keep meaning to buy one of these, but i know if i do i'll never use it.sort of like my girlfriend and the vacuum.
5/22/2009 2:13:09 PM
^^ actually, i know someone who does.i would love to, i just don't have the $ for new equipment.[Edited on May 22, 2009 at 2:57 PM. Reason : k]
5/22/2009 2:56:24 PM
irseriouscat made me laugh just nowbut lemme know. the camera isn't all that expensive honestly. I could probably pick one up and start my medium format career.
