Yeah, as happy as I am to never have to see that video again...it was a rite of passage and it was fun telling people that all 350,000 other concealed handgun permit holders in NC had also seen the same boring video. They're putting a new one together and last I heard, it would be ready in February/March and since Reese is no longer with us, the guy who's doing the new one is a lot more energetic. I just have to find two hours of filler material in the meantime.

Just applied for my FFL Type 3 License. Wish me luck!

What do you plan on doing with it?I take the GLOCK armorers course on Tuesday next week.

^ Yes; Collector of Curios & Relics. Process (unless I'm gravely mistaken) is real easy. AFT Form is online( http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-5310-16-notice.html) , fill out the PDF and mail first copy to Bureau of ATF and the second copy to local CLEO. $30 fee for 3 year license.^^ I want to start a Mosin Collection. For about the price of one FFL transfer, I can have this license and continue collecting. I may pick up a Garand, but I really don't care for them aside from the WWII American nostalgia. At least having the license helps open up possibilities.I considered taking a Glock Armour's course, but I really couldn't justify the cost. I can purchase a Glock via galleryofguns.com for nearly the same price (including cost of attending armour class) and have a lifetime warranty. I've more or less taken my glock apart (aside from firing pin assembly located in the slide) on my own and understand how they work. Lifetime warranty negates needing to ever replace parts at my own cost. Besides, if I do need a glock part, I now know who to call [Edited on December 7, 2011 at 10:07 PM. Soooo, I couldn't resist and picked up 2 more Mosin Nagants.Top to bottom: 1944 Matching Stamped Serials Izhevsk Round High Wall Receiver M441941 Matching Stamped Serials Izhevsk Round Low Wall Receiver 91/301936 Matching Stamped Serials Tula Hex Receiver 91/30 (My First MN)Got a heck of a deal on them, though I had to drive 90 minutes one way to Biscoe to get them They are indeed in pretty good shape, with the "biggest" exception being the condition of the metal on the bolts. The M44 has it the worse than the Izzy 91/30, but really it's mostly discoloration/tarnish with very minimal pitting. I've compared the M44 bolt to my 1936 Tula Bolt, which came in pristine condition straight from the crate. Is it going to take a heckuva lot of elbow grease to get the M44 bolt to look like my Tula, or is there a trick that will help me out? Perhaps 600 grit sandpaper? I'd like to avoid sanding, but a quick Google doesn't turn up any other alternatives... I recall a vinegar or baking powder solution but I can't remember if it's for helping remove corrosion on steel/metals or something else.
12/9/2011 10:59:31 AM
Im not sure if you are supposed to use it on gun bolts, but I have used naval jelly to remove corrosion very successfully in the past from parts like that.

This may have already been covered (in the last 124 pages of this thread), but what are everyone's estimates on how much it would cost to purchase the upper and lower for an AR-15 or variant before you can get shooting? The only reason I'm looking at the AR is because they seem to make so many accessories for this firearm. Thoughts?
12/9/2011 1:47:21 PM
that's a loaded question. Do you want a POS plinker just to say you have an AR, an extremely reliable setup that's fun to take to the range and good insurance in case of a national crisis, or something extremely accurate for varmint hunting?[Edited on December 9, 2011 at 1:54 PM. Entry is about $600, decent is $800, and then the prices can go way up.

^^Fair enough.I don't want something that sits on a table that I take pictures of, post online, and act like a gun nut. I'd like something that actually works. I just bought a Mossberg Silver Reserve 20 gauge o/u shotgun for myself from Drye's Gun Shop in Bahama. His wife spent a lot of time with me and fitted me properly to it. I have short arms so they are going to have to modify the stock a few inches to fit, and have offered to take me shooting. (I'm too big for the youth and too small for the regular size). She even showed me her (rather extensive) gun collection. Yay for wimminz with guns!

MaximaDrvr, good call on the stubby p-mag from pxmidwest. i got one stubby 10 rd and a regular 20 rd.do the p-mag dust cover things serve a purpose other than keeping dirt out of the mag? i saw where it said to keep the cover on there when storing the mags loaded. is that really necessary or what?
12/11/2011 5:51:10 PM
It keeps the rounds from pushing up on and deforming the feed lips, and supposedly makes the mags last longer. I have heard a few stories of mags starting to split at the mold line, but I don't put a lot of weight on those reports.

Where might I find a 10-round 9mm H&K USP magazine in Raleigh? I've got a range qualification test on Saturday, and seem to have misplaced one of my old (empty) magazines. I've already got 2 15-round and 1 10-round, so I'd like another 10 just for an even half of a plinking box. I already called PDHSC and Eagle One, and they don't have 'em.

Anyone get a response from SECU?I walked out of one carrying $4k for a car. I was sure that I gave no indication of why I was there or that I had the cash, but I nearly got cornered by some very aggressive beggars afterward in the parking lot. My gun was sitting uselessly in my car, waiting for its law-abiding owner to come back. All money and no gun makes Jack a dead guy. My tale and the request to respect my rights has not been answered.^^^^No worries there. I hate when people do that. this is a pretty broad question but-i just got a ruger no 1 in 45-70 with a 26 inch barrel. i am currently building a 100 yard range to shoot it at and was hoping for some scope suggestions.like i said, 45-70 and 100 yards tops. budget is $500 tops, but would like some "best value" suggestions. i like leupolds, but this is based only on handling some friends' scopes, their reputation, and the fact theyre made in america (i think)?i want to utilize the scope to its fullest, so i dont want a 3x9 that's constantly sitting on 3x.handloads will be pretty varied... 350 grains @ 1200fps up to 405 grains at near 2000.thanks in advance! feel free to ask me anything else that will influence your suggestions.
12/15/2011 7:57:49 PM
2-7x Leupold. You need a quality scope for that kind of recoil. a leupold just looks classy on top of a classic rifle like that. there's also the new redfield scopes made in oregon by leupold. i hear they're good, especially for the price.good article: http://www.chuckhawks.com/scope_magnification_rifle_caliber.htm[Edited on December 15, 2011 at 9:38 PM. I agree with the ~2-7x range. This would be nice:http://www.opticsplanet.net/leupold-vx-3-175-6x32-riflescope.htmlMy boss has an old 2-7x Vari-X III (which is roughly the same as a VX-II) on his 458 Winmag and I think it's the right magnification range for those types of guns. One day I'll get a 6x FX-II/3 or a 2-7x VX-II/3 to replace the 3-9x40mm VX-I on my Tikka T3. That gun deserves nicer glass that is lighter weight.[Edited on December 15, 2011 at 9:55 PM. Reason : ^Chuck Hawks is an idiot][Edited on December 15, 2011 at 9:58 PM. http://www.chuckhawks.com/critical_look_T3.htmHe's bashing manufacturers for producing cheap guns when that's where the market is.It's not fair to compare a $500 T3 to a $700 700 BDL. If you want a nice gun, you have to pay. If you didn't pay, don't gripe.I like how he says the two piece T3 bolt is a horrible design. There's no way in hell you'd break the handle. Yeah, it costs less than welding it on, but did he look at how much better the machining in a T3 is compared to a 700? The bolts in T3 fit waaaay better in the actions than any factory 700. You can take a T3, hold it horizontally, and give the gun a tiny shake forwards or backwards and the bolt is going to smoothly ride along in the raceways until it opens or closes. You won't do that in a 700.It's just an old man reminiscing about the good old days when the 700 was high tech and ranting about shit he doesn't have first hand experience with.[Edited on December 15, 2011 at 10:09 PM. anything other than his opinion on the T3 that makes him an idiot? i'm not saying the guy never gets anything wrong, but his articles usually present some good information and decent opinions.i've got a T3. it shoots great and it was relatively inexpensive, but it's cheap. lots of T3 owners get upset when folks call their guns cheap. i don't know why.unrelated:i think i have decided on a 20" RRA coyote rifle upper for my AR. any scope suggestions? thinking it might be nice to have some kind of BDC or mildot reticle to make quick shots at varying ranges a little easier.[Edited on December 15, 2011 at 10:30 PM.
