It's pretty amusing at how they blatantly ripped off a lot of Touchwiz. Looks like a good phone and was the only other LTE phone besides the Thunderbolt that I was considering but too bad it has Bing. Would've been nice to have replaced the Revolution with a G2x with LTE.
5/25/2011 11:14:40 AM
So what are the advantages of the Revolution over the Charge?[Edited on May 25, 2011 at 12:09 PM. Reason : typo]
5/25/2011 12:09:32 PM
It's not Samsung.That's a pretty big one.
5/25/2011 12:25:53 PM
Nothing really other than it not being Samsung and will maybe get timely updates. Charge wins with the Super AMOLED Plus screen and hummingbird processor. Believe the battery in the Charge is slightly bigger (1600 v 1500). Touchwiz in itself really isn't that bad and is probably the second smoothest UI under HTC's Sense but they have such deep hooks into the google framework that development is a pain in the ass and most developers dislike samsung due to lack of updates/source code. Not sure how deep LG's UI ties in or how they'll handle OS updates so I guess we'll see how that goes.
5/25/2011 12:31:21 PM
I believe this is also LG's first top-tier android smartphone, so take that for what it's worth. I don't like the design of the Charge...at all. Also, cheap plastic FTL.
5/25/2011 12:33:26 PM
Are any other LTE devices on the immediate horizon for Verizon?I got burned last time on a new phone when I bought a Storm 1 about three weeks before the Storm 2 came out. Do NOT want a repeat of that scenario to play out.
5/25/2011 1:03:16 PM
The only other LTE device expected soon was the Droid Bionic/Motorola Targa/Nonexistent Amaze-a-phone.It was delayed for "enhancements."And no one's seen it since.
5/25/2011 1:26:32 PM
Droid Bionic this summer. I'm pretty sure they're going to add a docking feature like the Atrix.[Edited on May 25, 2011 at 1:30 PM. Reason : .]
5/25/2011 1:30:06 PM
Depends what your definitions of "immediate" is. 3 of the 4 phones of the phones shown at CES will be available tomorrow. It all depends on what you want. The Bionic from CES was scrapped and redesigned so it's still probably at least a couple months out. It'll be slightly more future proof than the others since it's the only one with dual core and has a significantly larger battery but it'll still have Motorola's locked bootloader and blur. No word on any other LTE phones. The Thunderbolt has a huge following and already has a stable leak of Gingerbread. Would've been nice to have the hardware from the Sensation though but I'm definitely happy with it.The Charge has a nice screen and probably the best hardware out of the bunch but Samsung's lack of US software updates may annoy you over 2 years. You may have Gingerbread by ChristmasAs Senez said above, LG is relatively unproven in the high-end android market. The low-end Optimus line did well and the newer Optimus line has a ton of potential. The LG G2x on Tmobile will likely be up there with the Galaxy SII as one of the best phones of the year. Too bad the Revolution is just a toned down single core version.
5/25/2011 1:33:54 PM
Holding out for the Galaxy SII on Verizon, who knows if it'll be this year
5/25/2011 1:35:44 PM
yeah, I considered waiting just for the hardware but figured Verizon would figure a way to cripple it and who knows how long unlimited data will be around.
5/25/2011 1:42:27 PM
I think my G2 is fucked upBought it in January, within a month I noticed that it was randomly powering off. Didn't seem like it was overheating, and I couldn't tie it to any application or process. Only happened once a week or so, and unlike my Curve it doesn't take 20 minutes to boot, so whatev. Between then and now I've rooted and flashed CyanogenMod. Powering down still happened, but not any more or less frequently. About a week ago it started happening multiple times a day, and yesterday I picked it up off my desk and it was hot like fire. Now it's powering off every hour or so. wtf help me.

Anyone in raleigh with vzw signal issues feel free to pm me your 10 digit number to be added to my trouble ticket. I have about 12 numbers so far. Do so even if you've opened a ticket. Tech reps have had trouble findng related tickets for this issue so having all the numbers could help link them. Also, I was told that the 4g install wouldnt cause these issues... I don't know if I believe that, but even if true they'll keep hearing from me until the problem is fixed.
5/25/2011 4:56:58 PM
So VZW has officially said Droid X will get the gingerbread update this Friday. Take that with a grain of salt.

w00t. HTC to no longer lock bootloaders
5/26/2011 9:27:23 PM
does that mean that one-click rooting will be available for it? I don't know much about the development, but i was able to root my DX easily but it was a bitch to do on my sister's EVO4g and never really finished it (required more than a one-click approach)
5/26/2011 9:41:17 PM
It probably won't make rooting any easier but it should speed up and reduce the risk for rom flashing. For the Thunderbolt, it'd still be a pita process of flashing older firmware to gain root since they haven't managed to exploit the present firmware but you'd no longer have to worry about the developers finding and engineering bootloader or doing the impossible of actually cracking it. No comment on if/how they'll treat existing devices like the Thunderbolt or Incredible 2. Also probably too late to redo the software on the Evo 3D and Sensation so who knows if they'll do it via an OTA or what.[Edited on May 26, 2011 at 10:09 PM. Reason : ]

HTC has just won me over for life.
5/26/2011 10:31:40 PM
one click rooting is already available for some HTCs. I was unbelievably surprised how easy rooting my incredible was.
5/26/2011 10:56:09 PM
is all i need to do to download and install a Verizon OS update OTA onto my rooted phone unroot it in z4root and re-root after the update?should i need to back up any data?actually i guess its just a system update, not an update from Froyo, should i even bother?[Edited on May 26, 2011 at 11:08 PM. 5/26/2011 10:57:44 PM
I got sick of my piece-of-shit Thunderbolt, switching to the Droid Charge next week.Much better screen, better camera and better battery life. Since it's easy to root the Charge, I'm not worried about Touchwiz or the lack of updates from Samsung.
5/27/2011 3:56:16 AM
ha good luck with that. Samsung is a joke.
5/27/2011 7:28:23 AM
The Samsung Galaxy S II is going to be a joke?

Not hardware-wise, software-wise is yet to be determined.
