NRR- My 16" regular profile S&W M&P15 with free float tube and scope has done 3 shot groups around 1/2" at 100yrds. It will do that a few times, until the barrel heats up and then they open up to around an 1". I had a bull barrel 20" for a while, I hated it. It was hardly more accurate than my M&P, and was horrible to walk around with.If I were to do it again, I'd look at a 16" bull barrel (DPMS) or something like a heavy sporter Bushmaster varmint.[Edited on November 23, 2011 at 7:31 AM. Reason : You can also polish the mating surfaces of the trigger group for a smoother pull. ]

well went to PDHSC today to do some shooting... i thought I was in a warzone. i got hit by shrapnel no less than 10 times. guy beside me got hit with a piece of mine and it left a pretty good scratch on him. time for them to clean up their range i guess. i'd never before experienced that amount of shrapnel coming back at the booths there. on huge piece grazed through my hair and made a loud thud on the back glass. yikes anywho, my LCP still had some feed, fire, & ejection failures via 3 different magazines and 4 different types of ammo. I wasn't blocking the slide or anything. it also has trouble chambering the first round, which I previously forgot to mention (slide gets jammed and must be forced forward. off to ruger I guess.

What is the "regular profile"? Same as govt profile? I think I want at least 18" for the extra velocity and therefore flatter shooting. Idk what will suit me best. I'm just looking at various coyote and predator ARs for ideas.
11/23/2011 4:28:33 PM
My go take out some deer and/or pests this weekend with my AR-10 Headed to my parents ranch not too far from San Antonio, TX. Tons of deer and the occasional coyote and bobcat.
11/23/2011 5:25:22 PM
The standard/regular profile is the government profile. The jump in velocity from 16" to 18" is pretty big IIRC. The jump from 18 to 20" isn't as big, so yeah, you'd probably want 18.Pay attention to the twist rate too as it can have a big impact on accuracy depending on the ammo you plan to shoot. You'll probably want 1:9 unless you want small critters to explode with light bullets (1:12) or you want the best accuracy from the heavier weight bullets and plan to shoot past the 200 yard mark (1:7 or 1:8).
11/23/2011 5:31:58 PM
^4 I went with a friend(guy that sports talk knuckleheads think I have an obsession with) and his wife and we were very surprised at how many fragments there were. One piece inbound was close to dime size...
11/23/2011 5:55:53 PM
In 22-250 I like 55 or 52 gr bullets. For this I was thinking I'd like to be able to shoot 55 to 69. Can 1 in 9" do that range?
11/23/2011 6:31:37 PM
^ yeah, 1:9 would work. It's the most versatile in 223.

11/24/2011 5:58:50 PM
Yes.
11/24/2011 7:48:53 PM
did a bunch of shooting today with 2 marlin 30-30s, ak and mosinall shoot beautifully and i'll be damned if i didn't put a bullet all the way through the dead center of a ~16" diameter poplar tree with that mosin (after blowing up a jug of water sitting in front of it) from about 75 yardsthat's just insane. but it's that old steel-tip russian sardine-can ammo so i s'pose that's what it do
11/24/2011 8:34:47 PM
^ I picked up two more cans from North Raleigh Guns and met the store owner. REALLY nice guy. Got about 1100 rounds now for my mosin. Looking for a m38 or m44, but ones I have found are much more than I care to spend...Glad you've had fun with your Mosin. If it wasn't for you posting a picture of your mosin, I would have never looked into one.
11/24/2011 9:16:14 PM
well when you're out shooting it make sure you've got more than mid-size trees as a backstop i was dumbfounded]

http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-20-SAM-R-SS410-Barrel-with-Rifle-Length-Gas-p/bcm-ss410-samr%20brl%202.htm opinions on this barrel? think it'd be too heavy to carry around a little?
11/24/2011 11:40:00 PM
it doesn't list a weight, but from what i see for similar barrels it should be around 2.5-3 lbs.
11/25/2011 12:15:25 AM
So I shot my friend's glock 23 yesterday. Wow. I shoot this thing so much better than my H&K. Might be time to trade it in for a G23 with a .357 barrel..357 SIG P2000SKs are rare as hell, I wonder if I can make a profit off it...[Edited on November 26, 2011 at 3:52 PM. Reason : .]

Ended up getting a remington 597 Vtr at the show today for $300. Not a super great price, but it'll work.http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/rimfire/model-597/model-597-vtr.aspx
11/26/2011 4:05:04 PM
that gun is hideous
11/26/2011 5:24:30 PM
Yeah, its definitely "tacticool", but I kinda like the way the freefloat looks on it.I really like the weight of the barrel, and with a larger mag it has a similar profile to the AR. I was out to find one with a proper rail on top and a forearm, so it was either this or a 10/22 with an archangel kit, which would have been the same price.
11/26/2011 7:13:57 PM
why?
11/26/2011 7:21:04 PM
Bash it all you want, but this is going to be a fun gun to hunt squirrel and target practice with. I just ordered a tree style metal target, and a couple of different style resetting ones too.
11/26/2011 7:31:58 PM
how large are the "larger" mags?
11/26/2011 7:34:07 PM
the 597 i had was not accurate enough for squirrel hunting and it jammed with pretty much all ammo

11/27/2011 7:54:05 PM
Seems to be. Mine is about 3-4 years old.
11/27/2011 8:01:25 PM

sheriff's dept. found 4 of my stolen firearms in an Alamance County pawn shop i have been thoroughly impressed with Person Co. sheriff's dept in all my dealings with them. when i went in to pick up my CHP after transferring it up here, they were very helpful and knowledgeable. Person Co. doesn't stamp the sheriff's signature on the back, the sheriff actually signs it, so the girl was giving me a spill about having to wait for him to sign it, but he actually walked through the lobby as i was talking to the girl at the window, overheard the conversation and stopped and signed it right there on the spot. i thought that was pretty cool. when the deputy came out to do the incident report after the break-in, he was extremely courteous and helpful. he even came back the next night after my wife noticed some possible fingerprints and tried to pull prints from the surface where some jewelry was laying. pretty unheard of these days. now they actually followed through with checking pawn shops in the region for my serial numbers and have made getting my guns back very easy, just come by and pick them up. it's rare to find a law enforcement agency that actually works for the people who pay them.
11/30/2011 10:24:29 AM
i just had to post this...i'm so stoked:
11/30/2011 10:36:06 AM
