Form Concord, NC this evening

Trees down all over the damn place. House cut in two on wake forest, and north towards Franklinton has lots of trees down. Parts of I40 and I-85 have trees sticking into shoulder or lanes.

That shit was crazy in Charlotte today. I thought it was several hours later until I looked around and saw that everyone was still at work.
6/13/2013 10:18:22 PM
That storm was far from impressive in South Raleigh. I sat outside on my porch drinking a beer the whole time, and my only concern was getting dust in my glass.

^ And then the one time it verifies you will pay the price. It is always a dilemma. This is exactly the scenario that occurred with Sandy. When hurricane Irene headed for the NYC metro the hype was off the charts. For them it was a dud. When Sandy came along many didn't take it seriously because of Irene's failure to deliver. This includes Bloomberg who downplayed it. Obviously many paid dearly for that mistake.[Edited on June 14, 2013 at 11:31 AM. Reason : .]

we had 70mph straight line winds that took down many trees and branches. it didn't last very long, but that's still not something to ignore.
6/14/2013 11:33:37 AM
^I'm referring to my area, a few miles south of downtown. I was outside sitting on my porch the whole time. No winds even close to that strong here.^^Agreed, I thought all that hype was ridiculous and stupid. Though in hindsight Sandy was a HUGE event mainly b/c of the timing. Full moon high tide fucked that shit up. If it had hit at low tide the damage would have been a fraction of what it was.Now...whenever there's any risk of hail I don't drive anywhere. Car stays in the garage![Edited on June 14, 2013 at 11:36 AM. Reason : just saying]
6/14/2013 11:34:10 AM
i get that, i'm saying that the warnings weren't an over reaction because our area did have damaging winds
6/14/2013 11:47:37 AM
fair enough. but i feel like severe thunderstorms are fairly common and yet ppl got all up in arms about this one. That's all

20 year-old girl died in downtown chapel hill when a tree fell on herhttp://www.wral.com/share/page/1896337/?d_comment_order=forward&id=12553284#comments_block(it was the craziest windstorm i've seen in a while, saw multiple trees and branches down on my 10 minute ride home from work. people still don't have power. i understand the "hype")[Edited on June 14, 2013 at 11:57 AM. that storm was nothing to fuck withit felt like my car was being lifted off the ground when I was heading home thru downtown
6/14/2013 12:15:55 PM
Hurricane Fran was the only other time I've personally experienced winds like that (of course I'm not equating a multiple-hour hurricane to a 2-minute burst, but the wind speeds looked similar)
6/14/2013 12:18:32 PM
Wasn't very windy inside my office where I stayed the fuck insideI'm Krallum and I approved this message.

The problem with thunderstorms is that the severe weather associated with them can be incredibly localized. Someone can be sitting on their porch, listening to the thunder, enjoying a beer, and down the road all hell can be breaking loose. Even within a squall line, where the wind will impact more people, gaps in the worst weather still exist. Anyway what happened yesterday is being labeled a "low end Derecho". It didn't live up to the expectations of a PDS watch (particularly dangerous situation), but it still caused problems for alot of people. Last year's derecho farther north would be more on the order of a PDS type of event with widespread hurricane force winds. A PDS tornado watch (as opposed to severe thunderstorm watch) would be more on the order of what happened on 4/16/11 in NC and Tuscaloosa in AL that year.

^agreed and agreed:

a row of townhouses near me lost shingles in the storm. Also saw several large uprooted and snapped trees in the woods adjacent to my neighborhood. after I got out of my neighborhood damage was minimal. There was definite localized straight-line wind damage throughout town though.my friend near lake wheeler lost a tree in his backyard as well.
6/15/2013 2:31:20 AM
^^ Well also in severe thunderstorms the severe weather usually doesn't last more than a few minutes in any one given area since they are smaller scale events. There are exceptions but for the most part it is pretty quick.

^ The power goes out off Kaplan when its not even raining.
6/18/2013 6:26:04 PM
Hmm there hasn't been one all day in that system.
6/18/2013 6:32:17 PM
I'm OFF KAPLAN and lately the power only goes out when it's NOT storming. During the "derecho" we kept power despite almost all the other surrounding grids losing it for hours. We were honestly very surprised. I wonder if they've been beefing up the Kaplan stuff since it goes out after a light summer breeze.

I was at Crossroads Ford in Wake Forest from 5:00-6:45 or so. We were standing around outside when this really black cloud rolled overhead. I saw a lot of circulation and some pretty decent rotation in the storm, but it did not look organized at all. Then I get in the car and hear we are under a tornado warning. Driving back to Raleigh we were riding down Capital Blvd in a fucking monsoon. That was fun.

6/19/2013 3:12:36 PM
Really awesome gust front moving over Carrboro right now. Sat outside for a bit watching the rotation in the clouds. Cool stuff.
6/26/2013 6:46:10 PM
Hotdamn is it raining hard OFF KAPLAN.
6/26/2013 7:26:54 PM
I have been seeing a few pics of an awesome shelf cloud on FB.

6/26/2013 7:42:50 PM
it rains every fucking day at my house
6/26/2013 7:45:08 PM
Weak storm but a nice good soaking that will keep my grass wet for another day or two
6/26/2013 8:06:49 PM
Carrboro/Ch Hill about to get as well areas north and east of Durham. After that North Raleigh. Raleigh itself may also get some of the action but it remains to see how bad it will be there.
6/28/2013 6:04:32 PM
Yep windy is really blowing the trees and rain around right now in Carrboro.
6/28/2013 6:10:44 PM
6/28/2013 6:14:57 PM
Morrisville about to get hit with a nice core of wind. Some of this could eventually clip Raleigh itself.
6/28/2013 6:28:31 PM
getting close...
6/28/2013 6:43:42 PM
It looks like the highest velocities are now on their way into Apex. The ones headed for Raleigh itself don't look as robust. Of course the beam is pretty low there so that may be a factor as well.
6/28/2013 6:45:05 PM
Whatever came through West Cary was weird. The worst of the storm arrived after it brightened up outside.
