I should've prefaced my comment with something along the lines of "this album isn't for me". I've listened to it a couple times at a friend's house, and it just seemed generic. The best moments seemed way too derivative of Stevie Wonder

^^^ i thought that the lyrics for multiple songs on this album are terrible. and i'm not a Frank Ocean hater either, i still listen to the lonny breaux mixtape quite a bit, however lyrics like:

Quote :
"I know what I was on, I had a Pilot Jones
She took me high, then she took me home
Pilot Jones, Pilot Jones"

and

Quote :
"Forrest Gump you run my mind boy
Running on my mind boy
Forrest Gump

I know you Forrest
I know you wouldn't hurt a beetle
But you're so buff, and so strong
I'm nervous Forrest"

make me want to throw the cd out the car. i mean really he made a forrest gump song? that and the crack rock song...

(pyramids and pink matter are enjoyable though)

^^^two pages about best coast and you just now think of moronic lyrics? Best Coast is the worst shit i ever heard in my life. Well that's not true, but they severely overhyped and completely suck

i'm usually near the front of the line to mock Pitchfork, but i think they actually got it about right with Frank Ocean. maybe a little high, but not by much.

it's not a 9.5 in most years, but it's definitely a good album and a 9.5 with what we have to choose from this year. "sweet life", "bad religion" and "pyramids" alone make it worthy of a high score.

i like the new dan deacon track that popped up a few days ago, but i find whatever those played-in-reverse-sounding vocals that come in at certain points to be really irritating.

I've never really been a fan but they were all nice guys the few times we played with them. I streamed a few songs on youtube from this new album though and I have to say that I think they took a big step back. Their guitar players were/are actually pretty good but most of that doesn't show on the new stuff and the new drummer is super boring.

^^^^I talked to one of the guitarists about the new album the other day. They just apparently wanted to do something that was pretty different from LOL. They really liked what they did with LOL and it was a very good album IMO, but they were tired of it and wanted to do something different. I told him that I really respected instead of blindly making more music that sounds the exact same to try to get more album sales, they made something they enjoyed making. He said there's like a 99% chance whatever they do next will sound completely different.

The guitar parts aren't as exciting, and the new drummer is definitely nothing special IMO. They also cut out the "clean" vocals. Haven't really dug into the lyrics yet, but they seem to be on par with LOL on first listen.

I think LOL was a better album, but there are a few good tracks on this one, and it's worth a listen if you're into that kind of music.

Also they apparently had production issues and had to leave off one of the songs they were using to promote the new album.

From the sounds of the first two tracks the upcoming Lupe Fiasco sounds like a return to form after the mess that was Lasers. I don't know if he'll ever get back to where he was with The Cool and Food and Liquor but at least it sounds like he's not got the label fucking around with him any more.
