I'm with Scottrade, but there are some things I don't care for about it (for one, it's a pain in the dick to withdraw money from your account). It was the hot deal when I opened my accounts due to it being cheap, at $7/trade, with all of the basic functionality you need. There may be better choices now--I haven't compared brokers in probably 6-7 years. I've thought about looking into other brokers, or just moving everything to USAA to keep everything in one place, but I haven't bothered with it, yet.

^ really? i just call my local Scottrade office and tell them i want a check mailed to my house, and its there in days.btw, my MRVL isn't moving, but i made a few points on MU (trail-stopped out of it)

i tried to tell you MRVL is a dog and a huge insider name. the deck is stacked against the casual investor

yeah - i'm right at breakeven. i'll put in a tight trailing stop..

AAPL

Sigh

Maybe an elementary question here:I own a position in AAPL and have so for the last four years. If I purchased additional shares now, would it make my entire position subject to short term capital gains if I sold next month, or would my initial position still fall under the long term bracket?

You can sell the shares in different manners. FIFO, LIFO, or specific tax lots. Basically if you want to specifically sell the shares you bought four years ago you can indicate that when you place the trade and still qualify for long term cap gains on the shares you've held more than a year.[Edited on December 17, 2012 at 12:30 PM. Great, thanks. Is this an "ad hoc" trade i need to route through an office rep or do most online interfaces (Scottrade in my case) provide this option?
12/17/2012 12:32:25 PM
Scottrade will allow you to do this but it can be kinda screwy and you have basically only from the time you make the trade till it clears to change from your default strategy.
12/17/2012 12:36:44 PM
Is there a more efficient way to navigate? Perhaps opening up a separate account under my wife's name?

I think most default strategies on Scottrade are FIFO so lets say you have 10 shares of aapl and buy another 20. So long as you sell 10 shares it is going to sell those first 10 shares you bought by default. Now if you buy 20 shares and want to sell 10 of those then you have to go in and manually tell it which ones you wanted to sell. Other brokers I believe have it setup a little better as far as selling specific lots but that has been my experience with Scottrade.

Got europe correct. Japan hasn't happened but i said "may".Got the fed bailouts correct. Got countries moving away from the dollar correct, although it hasnt happened en masse yetBank of america hasn't failed yet, though you could argue they are still receiving the same bailouts all banks are and of course basel continues to get delayed indefinitely (as it always will)Got gold correct as it continued to climb for the 11th consecutive year, though this was the first it didnt reach double digits

Do you have moments of clarity or is it all one long drunken delusion?
1/5/2013 12:37:12 AM
Yeah, I'll enjoy my double digit growth from last year while you hold on to gld.
