^ The Giants may actually need Bell if Wilson is out of the rest of the season. Maybe they'll trade Beltran to the Padres

Really cool tidbits. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AtYm6PMUXtuMB6z_oQOdo9sRvLYF?slug=jp-passan_25_things_you_did_not_know_about_baseball_0825112. Two players haven’t popped out this season.Nearly 650 times, Los Angeles Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick(notes) has swung and made contact. Not one of those balls lingered in the air before settling into an infielder’s glove.Texas superutilityman Michael Young(notes) is at more than 750 contacts without a popout. Only twice in the past decade has a player qualified for the batting title and not popped out: Larry Bigbie in 2004 and Joey Votto(notes) in 2010.It’s a staggering feat of skill mixed with a healthy dose of luck. The numbers back the skill part. Over the last six seasons, Young has popped out 21 times in 3,683 at-bats. Kendrick’s 2,350-at-bat career includes 11 popouts.3. Votto’s ability to avoid popouts might be more impressive than Kendrick and Young’s.The reigning National League MVP is following his perfect 2010 with a near-perfect 2011. He had the temerity to pop out once this year, giving him one in 1,010 at-bats over the last two seasons. It’s doubly noteworthy because Votto frequently drives the ball in the air, accumulating 130 extra-base hits during that span. The king of popouts in 2011, Arizona Diamondbacks centerfielder Chris Young, has 38 in 472 at-bats. The player to whom Votto’s offensive numbers best match up, St. Louis Cardinals superstar Albert Pujols(notes), has popped out 13 times this season – a huge outlier. Pujols pops up more than the gopher at Bushwood Country Club: 261 in 6,186 at-bats.Votto has 10 in 2,089 at-bats.]

^^ Interesting read. Those guys are amazing to be able to stay on pitches like that. Michael Young has had pretty damn stout career but nobody seems to notice. Wonder if he can keep it up for another 4-5 years if he'll get some HOF love. Got a slim chance to get to 3000 hits (he about to turn 35), has over a .300 career BA and has played the entire infield extremely well over the course of his career. If nothing else he should definitely be around 2500 hits, .290ish BA, ~200 HRs, ~1300 RBIs and runs scored. Plus he had 5 straight seasons of 200+ hits. Playing in steriod era during some of his best seasons won't help.

Greg Booker just got called up to the nationals as the new pitching coach.
9/6/2011 10:26:29 PM
Surkamp 5 innings 3 runs tonight in his 2nd start. In line to get the W right now up 4-3 in the 7th.
9/7/2011 12:07:50 AM
I'm as big of a baseball fan as anyone, but good God this season sucks with no playoff races outside of the Rangers-Angels. I'm glad the Braves have the NL Wild Card all but clinched, but it sucks that there won't be any late season drama in the NL at all and very little in the AL either. Damn you Julio Lugo!
9/7/2011 8:26:04 AM
I really hope the marlins win all the rest of the games this month.

Surkamp 4 and 2/3 only 1 run but 6 walks and 4 Ks.Still 2-0 and at 2.95 ERA.....looking good maybe he makes the team rotation full time in 2012.

New logo for the Miami Marlins?Posted from http://ht.ly/6AMeT

Can't wait for the coral alts. That logo is Miami as fuck.[Edited on September 21, 2011 at 3:10 PM. Reason : Marlins text at the top looks sort of Giants-esque]
9/21/2011 3:09:24 PM
Wow that new Marlins logo is horrendous. I guess they are trying to appeal to the gay fan. Are they going to wear uniforms with those colors? They can just buy some old 70s Astros uniforms and change the letters.
9/21/2011 4:47:51 PM
just change their name to the "Gators" or the like by 2015 and BTTF2 would have gotten it right

9/27/2011 1:21:25 AM
^^^, ^^ bad news on both counts.
9/27/2011 1:43:30 AM
^^ ESPN is a good source for sports information as well as the AP. Don't tell anyone. Also the idea of expanding the MLB playoffs is dumb as hell. They should keep it at 4 teams per league and start the season earlier so that baseball is done before football kicks into high gear.
9/27/2011 6:56:31 AM
9/27/2011 7:00:07 AM
^ It has taken two unprecedented, epic collapses to allow both the Cards and Rays back into the playoff race. Yeah it was a premature statement, but no one saw either the Braves or Red Sox imploding like this.
9/27/2011 7:48:52 AM
^ True...but that doesn't stop it from being humorous. To non-Brave fans of course.

i went to the astros/cards game last night, because i'm a baseball fan, the game had importance in the scheme of things, and i have a friend or two who are cardinal fans and wanted to go.this was the lowest attended game of the four i went to in houston this year. ended up scalping tickets for $3 that included a hot dog / chips / soda combo. that was pretty sweet. ended up migrating to about the fourth row behind third. it was a very entertaining game.the astros as a team and an organization are in a pretty sad state.
