So how do you go about making a lake or pond in the game?Every time I lay water down, i get wierd currents, etc... I just want it to fill up an area i carved out.

Nevermind, figured it out.

To do a pond or something, you need to make a checkerboard of holes.Like this:+-------------+|OXOXOXOXO||XOXOXOXOX||OXOXOXOXO|+-------------+Where O is the holes (or X, doesnt matter).Fill each of the holes in with water, then carve out the non-holes one at a time. When you carve out a block, make sure that it has water on at least 2 sides of it before you carve it. You will get currentless water. If you want it more than one level deep, make sure you start at your highest level, once you have a complete area filled with water 1 level deep, you can carve down without causing currents.
10/10/2010 7:55:47 AM
Not reallyYou can just dig out an area and keep filling it with water
10/10/2010 7:57:36 AM
Just pouring water in never worked for me, it always kept evening it out to be a filling current/infinite spring.
10/10/2010 9:39:13 AM
To make infinite water you need two buckets of water. Dig a hole 3x1 wide. Fill each end with water. It will stop flowing and become solid water. Then you can take out the middle block of water infinite amounts of times.
10/10/2010 9:43:48 AM
Thats what I did when I started moving to larger areas, made a small pool nearby so I could get my water from there for the larger grid.I made an olympic swimming pool for god sakes
10/10/2010 10:21:41 AM
You can also make a 2x2 square and put a bucket of water in two opposite corners... then you can take water from anywhere in that pool
10/10/2010 12:49:09 PM
Nope. None of these water are suggestions are working...
10/11/2010 9:03:35 AM
Do you want me to take some screenshots of how I did it?If you want to see the final product, head over to the "Wolfmarsh Recreation Center" on the TWW server. Not nearly finished, but pretty good for what I've got so far.
10/11/2010 9:46:43 AM
Screenshot would be great, step by step. Tried everything. Water dissappears after three seconds.
10/11/2010 10:31:02 AM
checkerboard for water definitely works, been using it for a while.
10/11/2010 10:31:16 AM
Does the material matter? As in, will it work if the pond is dirt, not stone? Is there a server flag regarding "water stay?" Nothing works.
10/11/2010 10:35:57 AM
Nope. Ive done it in dirt, sand, and stone so far.Ill take some screenshots tonight when I get home.

^The next step for those people is to try and recreate the Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar video.
10/11/2010 12:29:13 PM
^You know I was thinking just that when I was watching that video. Someone REALLY needs to do that. I love Michel Gondry videos.
10/11/2010 12:56:37 PM
I'm actually thinking about starting back up (of course). Are people spawning materials on TWW server? I'd hope not.
10/11/2010 3:05:08 PM
Underwater building is getting annoying. Having to stop to breath isn't too bad, but it's almost too dark to see anything. Mincraft needs underwater lights.
10/11/2010 3:36:18 PM
^glass tube+lava=underwater lightsand I'd just like to go on record as saying that I mined every single block for my buildings by hand, no spawning here[Edited on October 11, 2010 at 3:40 PM. Reason : pew pew]

Let's see some pics of stuff everyone is working on.
10/11/2010 4:22:10 PM
On the server you don't need to worry about being underwater. You won't take damage or die. Same goes for Lava...you catch on fire but that's about it.[Edited on October 11, 2010 at 5:18 PM. Reason : first hand experience]

Looks like minecraft.net is down... is anyone able to connect right now?

Step 1, dig the checkerboard.Step 2, fill all the holes.Step 3, Begin to carve between the holes, 1 by 1.Step 4, Remove the center block.[Edited on October 11, 2010 at 8:11 PM. Reason : .]

Shit is laggy as hell. And what's up with that giant elevated waterfall?
10/11/2010 8:25:20 PM
I cant even connect at the moment.
10/11/2010 8:28:57 PM
wolfmarshYou could dig that 3x3 hole, dump water in three of the corners and be done with itNo need for the checkerboard stuff
10/11/2010 8:40:00 PM
I tried that numerous times and it didnt work.
10/11/2010 8:43:19 PM
I just did it on my singleplayer file to make sure I wasn't full of shit. Worked fine.Is this multiplayer you're talking about? I noticed some weird things happening with water there.
10/11/2010 8:44:15 PM
Yeah, its completely different in multiplayer.
10/11/2010 8:44:46 PM
Is anyone else able to log in to the TWW server?
10/11/2010 9:11:35 PM
^^ What's different in multiplayer? That's what I've been asking about. I cannot get water to stay in multiplayer...screenshots didn't help, but thx.
10/11/2010 11:41:29 PM
What are you trying to do with the water?
10/12/2010 6:39:37 AM
grr minecraft crashed while I was building my glass skyway... feel free to connect your towers to it if your tower hits the ceiling, I already connected to the huge tree.

^^^ Trying to make a simple pool. Tried a 2x2, checkerboard, 1 x 5 row, and others. After dumping the bucket of water, there is water for 3 seconds, and then it vanishes.I am not in or anywhere near the spawn zone.New: davidkuntuu told me there was a third party fix required in order for water to work correctly in multiplayer. Perhaps it has not been implemented in the server I'm playing on.[Edited on October 12, 2010 at 12:27 PM. Reason : ]
10/12/2010 12:26:34 PM
I thought I already said this??
10/12/2010 1:12:17 PM
Well, I'm now officially done with Minecraft single player.I have all the materials I need, a ludicrous mining operation, and built a fort that unless Notch introduces flying enemies, is impregnable.Hell I even went back and made the lower walls from obsidian (which I actually created and mined legitimately). Maybe multiplayer will make it more fun in the future.
10/12/2010 1:37:23 PM
start over on a new map... duhh..
10/12/2010 1:45:45 PM
^^ You should be messing around on the TWW server, there are no monsters, but its pretty fun with the crazy shit we have going on there.
10/12/2010 3:13:20 PM
^^^ 1. Start a new map2. Build a boat first thing3. Spend a full 2-3 days just sailing away in no general direction from the spawn point4. Start building, knowing if you die you might never find your way back again5. If you die, repeat steps 2-4Optionally, if you manage to get far enough along to build a compass in your new location, you can build a series of markers back to your spawn[Edited on October 12, 2010 at 3:30 PM. When building underwater, is there a trick for displacing water from underwater rooms other than filling them with blocks and then removing said blocks?
10/12/2010 5:21:50 PM
Fastest way I've heard of is to use dirt or rock for the outside layer, then fill the inside with wood and burn the wood. But yeah.. same principle, just a faster way of clearing it.
10/12/2010 5:34:42 PM
I never thought about burning wood. That would be much faster.
10/12/2010 6:06:40 PM
don't think you can burn the wood in multiplayer though[Edited on October 12, 2010 at 6:13 PM. Reason : as in, I think we have it disabled on our server]
