Porsche has made more profit per car than any other manufacturer for going on 20 years. They eat just fine I'm sure.

I have a '00 M coupe and a '07 Outback (each around ~100k miles) so there is no real need for this car other than to have something I can thrash, learn how to paint a car on, more readily tinker, etc. Thoughts? How is it as a deal?

you can thrash and tinker on both cars you already have pretty easily

Subaru's are almost like lego blocks and can be set up to do what you want

M-coupes can handle track duty as well and aren't that hard to work on, just more expensive for parts

^^Seems like the more expensive a manufacturer, the harsher the criticism. Which in some ways makes sense. But it would be biased to bash Porsche for a few well publicized instances while at the same time automakers like Subaru have been fucking over the enthusiastic crowd for years, on a much greater scale.

Car is rumored to have around 400hp, which would put it above the 911 Carrera S performance-wise. Price will probably be around $90-100k, which pretty much means I'll never be able to buy one

It wasn't. This woman is full of crap. Also, the car was on 9 year old tires. Porsche is gonna settle out of court, they don't want any BS media coverage. They'd probably win this court battle easily but not worth it for the public image.

Ya that Cayman really is pretty hot. I don’t understand why more people don’t buy the GT series cars from Porsche. Most seem to agree they’re more fun to drive, and better looking, yet they go and pick out a “loaded” AWD or something.

Carrera GT: That was not the first time somebody has sued Porsche over that car. The lawsuits are sticking around because people wrecking them tend to have money, and several Porsche engineers are on record saying that the car’s hard to control. These are the reasons most manufacturers don’t sell supercars that have soul anymore...

RE: Speed... 94mph at time of impact is a significantly different figure than 94mph at time of loss of control, however, that’s... a lot of speed. We humans can be pretty fragile under the right circumstances.

I was talking to one of my friends who is trauma surgery resident. Deceleration speed at which can aorta can rupture (or even detach) is relatively low...something like 35-40mph if you hit the right angle at impact. They see this day in and day out in car accidents and falls. Scary stuff...

My opinion is that Porsche has become more about Panameras and Cayennes and their respective owner set. Even the 911 has become more GT-oriented (and I mean in the grand touring sense, not the GT2/3/4 sense). The GT3/4 are important vehicles for Porsche to produce for image and identity, just like Jeep needs to produce [progressively less hardcore] Wrangler Rubicons...but they're after the hordes buying mass market stuff.



Oh well, it could be worse. They could be BMW.



My dad keeps talking about buying a Corvette or a 911. There is no way in hell he'd spring for an "S", let alone a Z06 or GT3. An automatic (or PDK) would be all but a certainty. I think I could probably get him to spring for the Z51 package (with an automatic) if he bought a 'Vette. I keep telling him not to even bother if he's going to get the mild-sauce versions, and that he would be far better off with another 335i for his purposes.

A shitload of those cars are sold almost purely on emotional appeal.

Hardly anything like a 3rd-gen RX-7, Evo VIII/IX, S2000, Elise/Exige, etc is produced anymore. Those cars were absolutely focused and weren't even available in lesser trim levels for anyone who didn't really want what those cars were about.

I guess the Alfa 4C qualifies, but it's a good bit pricier and lower volume than most of those others (Elise/Exige probably comparable). Other than that, it's option packages on more pedestrian stuff, and very expensive niche market vehicles and exotics/near exotics.

I heard a rumor that GT4 production would be limited to 600 units/year. Not sure if that's just for the US, the world, or the least bit true. If true it makes you wonder why??? Two fellas over at http://www.s2ki.com already have deposits down though so it doesn't sound terribly difficult to do so, so maybe the 600 figure is made up BS.

Kinda like BMW and the 1M. EVERYONE wanted that car, and the only made 1000 of them. Big head scratcher but given what BMW of today actually represents, it's sadly not surprising

RE: Elise/Exige. I’ve driven an Elise, it was a huge disappointment. It did not feel well sorted, and was totally gutless. I felt the same way about the S2000 btw. It’s supposed to be THE SHIZZLES, but when it comes down to it, still understeers at the limit, and gutless + buzzy. The exception to this is the FR-S (other than being incredibly underpowered), which is a rather well sorted car. I can’t remember driving a car that has shock damping this well matched to it’s chassis before!

Anyway, back to the 90s focused sports cars... I present to you the 3000GT base, transverse engine, FWD, yuck. Also, there were cars like the Supra, if there was ever a Japanese pony car, that’d be it. Sure there’s been exceptions like the EVO and the RX-7 turbo, but then there are exceptions out today also (FR-S, 4C). The best drivers cars are no longer made by BMW or Mazda, but somebody still makes good cars.

RE: Porsche, BMW, agreed completely. I think the GT4 and cars like the upcoming GT3 RS buy Porsche more time, but I am not thrilled about their future either. That said, I’m just tickled by my 996 GT3. A lovely car in every sense of the word. While we’re at it, here’s a spy shot of the GT3 RS;

My first S2000...I don't remember the handling balance details exactly, and it had dramatically different and significantly staggered wheel/tire sizes.

My second S2000 was all stock, and there was NOTHING understeer-y about it. It easily oversteered under throttle, and probably even easier with throttle lift. God help you if you touched the brakes while wrapped up hard in a corner. It would have been more work to induce understeer than oversteer.



Sure, there are great (albeit fat and huge due partly due to government regulation) cars made today, but they are either megabuck exotics/near exotics, or heavily upgraded versions of much more pedestrian vehicles, not serious sporting vehicles built from the ground up with pretty much one singular purpose.

It's not that the 3000GT wasn't a pig or that the Supra wasn't a Japanese pony car/GT...it's that there is nothing really analogous to an S2000/RX-7/Evo VIII or IX/etc out there now that I can think of.

^ Lulz, totally agree. I never found throttle induced oversteer all that easy to bring about on command with the s2k, but any throttle lift or braking just let the rear end float. I still maintain it's a fantastic car, I miss it quite a bit. If it wasn't for the hassle of a convertible in Cincinnati and flashbacks of my friend crashing mine, I'd sell my (z3) m coupe for another.

I've never driven an elise but I'd love to.

I mean, the S2k may have been easier to lift throttle steer compared to say.. a Mustang, but that hardly is a good metric.

I’ve owned a first gen Boxster S. It was a great car, sounds and feels great, very light on it’s feet but composed. Also sounded great. Finally, it sounded great as well.

I’ve driven two AP2s. I don’t recall ever driving an earlier example... I’ve also instructed in at least one if I remember correctly (Pat). I respect the car since it’s reasonably focused as a drivers car, yet I can’t help but be disappointed in Honda that they didn’t put something more powerful in it. A shame considering they had several engines that could’ve been massaged for the purpose. Same problem w/the Mazda RX-8 for that matter. :/

Didn't Honda change rear wheel width on AP2 to reduce oversteer because of all the filed complaints how easily it rotates...or they changed suspension geometry...something like that. I never tracked one, but if there is one thing I don't associate S2k with is understeer.

I've only driven one AP2, and it was not in anything even close to anger.

Everyone says the AP1s are significantly more aggressively tuned, suspension-wise. I believe it; my stock one was probably the most tail-happy thing I've driven, other than my 7.

Power-wise, it's fine for me, for what it is. It's definitely not a power car, and it doesn't bring much at all to bear below 6k RPM. After having a supercharged one and a stock one, I don't think I'd ever spend the money to supercharge it myself. It just doesn't add enough fun to the car to be worth it. Maybe a turbo or an MP62-blower based SC, as opposed to the centrifugal unit that was the thing to have back when I had mine, would be better.

And yet around almost any track chose an AP2 is faster than an AP1

The AP1's rear suspension geometry is set up for toe out under lift conditions. Makes the car incredibly nimble but a disaster when in the hands of some teenage schmuck driving his first sports car.

The AP2's rear suspension did away with that, as well as yes, has wider tires.

AP1 tires: front: 205/55/R16 rear: 225/50/R16
AP2 tires: front: 215/45/R17 rear: 245/40/R17
CR tires: front: 225/45/R17 rear: 255/40/R17

^^ I can see an AP2 being marginally quicker around most tracks.

Good to know about the rear suspension geometry. I never knew the details; I thought it was just blunted steady-state handling balance. That totally is in line with my observations, though...an AP1 car will have the back end step out quickly and significantly with any lift.

I always said that my stock S2000 was much more intimidating and more likely to kill a novice driver than my Z06 was.
