4/4/2009 3:11:42 AM
we're having 'company wide' meetings on monday
4/4/2009 3:23:33 AM
I have a big meeting Monday morning at 8 am. Fingers crossed it goes well.
4/4/2009 5:17:16 PM
Because to receive unemployment you have to meet their weekly qualifications which often include searching for work.
4/4/2009 5:47:49 PM
you're obviously stupid
4/4/2009 11:06:22 PM
^6 because one of the requirements is "are you available for work" for the week. and also if you contacted people about jobs.if you are on vacation out of the country, even if you talk to people about jobs, if they wanted you to start the next day and you couldn't, you wouldn't be available for work and shouldn't get the benefits.[Edited on April 4, 2009 at 11:15 PM. Reason : according to their "rules."]
4/4/2009 11:13:24 PM
that makes no sense at all
4/4/2009 11:25:02 PM
yes it does. if you turn down work, because you don't want it or because you can't be there when they need you, you should not get unemployment according to them.
4/4/2009 11:33:33 PM
but if you're not getting jobs you're not turning down work.
4/4/2009 11:34:11 PM
basically he's saying if he gets a job offer and they ask him-"can you start tomorrow?"if you are out of the country, chances are you can't.job-denied.
4/4/2009 11:35:39 PM
^^ i'm not disputing that, but it is a question on the online questionaire you fill out weekly. so it must have some effect.^ what she said.[Edited on April 4, 2009 at 11:36 PM. Reason : j]
4/4/2009 11:36:23 PM
"can I telecommute?"
4/4/2009 11:44:44 PM
LOL. job training teleconferences.]
4/4/2009 11:46:12 PM
"how about I do my training in the south african office? k?"
4/4/2009 11:51:28 PM
Starting a free class at Central Piedmont Community College on "Job Seeking Skills." Should satisfy the requirement that I be enrolled in classes so I can get my waiting period on unemployment suspended early and get my money sooner.
4/6/2009 7:02:19 AM
got laid off today
4/6/2009 12:10:01 PM
Damn man, that sucks. Best of luck finding a new job. What field are you in?
4/6/2009 12:17:00 PM
Now I get to play the waiting game. Interviewed Thursday...wait until....?
4/6/2009 1:53:45 PM
do you send thank you cards after interviews?
4/6/2009 1:56:38 PM
Yes!
4/6/2009 1:57:12 PM
after you send the resume, whats your protocol for following up? i just want some tips if you dont mind, you seem to be familiar with this process.
4/6/2009 2:00:20 PM
Generally, outside of sending a resume with a cover letter, there isn't all that much following up to do. If they find your resume and cover letter interesting, somebody will contact you about the job (of course). If you contact them the week after, then the week after, and so on until you get a response, they might just ignore your emails and shred your resume (being pesky about it will generally not help with most employers). The real good thing to do is, when they offer you an interview, to make a solid impression and then, after you leave there, send a follow-up thank you note. If you send out the thank you note by email (this works for many employers, depending on how you made the initial contact for the position), send it out the next day in the morning or early afternoon. If you're mailing a thank you note, writing it up when you get back from the interview and dropping it in the mailbox will probably get it there the next day or the day after (and should work just as well). Definitely make sure you get into contact with them in some way after the interview. And as for my news, well, no news = bad news! Still being strung along by the one company that wanted to make me an offer, so I'm applying to all sorts of jobs along the east & the gulf coast. Contacted a recruiter I spoke with at a past career fair today as well, and some of the government positions I applied for close this week (so I should hear back in a reasonable time from now).[Edited on April 6, 2009 at 2:37 PM. A few of my friends were laid off today and they were good at their jobs too. Some other people are getting pay cuts to prevent getting laid off. Things are getting worse.
4/6/2009 3:00:34 PM
http://raleigh.craigslist.org/egr/1109799307.htmlThis just popped up today. I might stop by to see if the people I met at northrop grumman are there. I'm pretty sure most of the openings you find there are going to be for mechanicals and electricals, but maybe some civvies and structural folks will find something.
4/6/2009 3:05:16 PM
^^ i'd say i was good at both my jobs. that doesn't mean shit when the economy is this bad, unfortunately. it sucks. sorry to hear about your friends.^ NG would be fun to work for, i think. they sponsored my senior design project. (although they just gave us our money and never spoke to us again. they didn't even come back to judge our work.) and thanks for that link BTW.
4/6/2009 5:00:50 PM
I wasn't working in anything that I really wanted to be in/related to my major. I graduated last May from NC State with a degree in Business Management - Supply Chain/Operations.

ACS Raleigh office is hiring 240 people for iPhone tech supporthttp://www.wral.com/business/story/4920489/i've heard mixed reviews about working at ACS, though...
4/9/2009 5:16:32 PM
^^ good luck.^ as have i.finally got my first unemployment check yesterday, along with the $25 bonus! woohoo, finally some income!
4/9/2009 5:28:59 PM
How does the unemployment office know if you are fired or layed off? I am getting laid off at the end of the month and want to know if I need to get some kind of paperwork saying I was laid off due to economic reasons.
4/9/2009 6:26:48 PM
I just wrapped up hour 9 of my 10 hour day. I am missing unemployment.
4/9/2009 7:00:31 PM
4/9/2009 9:17:30 PM
4/9/2009 9:28:21 PM
Well that presents another problem, I live in NC but the company I work for is in Illinois. I have been paying IL taxes for the last 2 years. When tax time comes around I end up filing a non resident form for IL and get a credit for the taxes I paid them and pay the difference to NC since taxes are higher in NC. I really hope I dont have to make a trip to Chicago to file for unemployment, that would suck!
4/9/2009 9:33:23 PM
gonna apply for a position within my current company...its in wilmington so i'd have to move but if i get it, that would be really awesome...figure i gotta have a leg up since i'm already in the company
4/9/2009 9:34:33 PM
^^ Hopefully that won't be the case, since you are working in NC.
4/9/2009 9:44:51 PM
Well thats the thing, I am not actually working in NC. I been working in various other states. I guess I just need to find the time to call the unemployment office.
4/9/2009 9:57:36 PM
4/9/2009 9:57:46 PM
anyone??
4/10/2009 8:03:35 PM
not me.
4/10/2009 8:21:04 PM
is your former employer paying your unemployment or the state?
4/10/2009 10:01:08 PM
I think employers all pay "unemployment insurance" and then the state pays the benefits. The reason to contest unemployment claims though is, like any insurance, the more claims you have the higher your premium.
4/11/2009 1:27:45 PM
^ that was my understanding as well.
