Do you think I will be disappointed with Vampire Weekend's performance at DAR Constitution Hall in DC?
1/26/2010 12:03:58 PM
Yes.They're not a very good band and they have the worst stage presence of any professional act I've ever seen. ]
1/26/2010 12:04:23 PM
Hmmmm, I've heard mediocre reviews of the sound at the venue as well. Oh well. I don't know if I'd go as far to say they're not a very good band, but I was a little nervous about how his vocals would translate live.....I guess I might have to get boozed up for this one

i feel like getting a portable record player. but it seems like the only brand i find new is crosley. should i take the risk and buy used? get one of the more expensive crosleys?i already have a stereo with a record player in durham (i'm split from a lot of my stuff until my gf moves up in may) so i want a record player in the mean-time. but also, i want something that i can put on the porch and listen to on an afternoon. anyway. any advice would help. i know someone here (goodlife maybe?) mentioned that they had one that they enjoyed. but i can't find the post to ask what they got.edit: and by portable i mean self-contained with speakers. i assume it will have to plug into a wall.[Edited on February 18, 2010 at 8:46 PM. I'm in Iowa where people are unaware of the valuables they give away. Are there any rare vinyl albums I should look for? Also, how are you, sir?
2/18/2010 8:39:38 PM
To my understand, vinylbandit collects the music he likes, not necessarily rare or particularly valuable pieces.http://www.musicpriceguide.com/http://www.forevervinyl.com/http://www.all-vinyl.com/These are all sites that have auctions and pricing guides that may be of help. The Vinyl Collectors Guides of the most use and incite are not free, and you have to pay for them--it's more a matter of appraisal than anything. Some things to look out for:-Original sleeves. If it's obvious that the sleeve has been replaced, then you're probably not holding an original.-Check for dates. Yea, it might look like a kickin' rad Beatles/Rolling Stones album, but if it's a reprint then it's probably worthless. -"Best Of" albums are generally worthless not just in value but in music--most music snobs will tell you that you don't necessarily just want a band's commercial singles. One of the few exceptions is an early Beatles album (I think they call it the red and white album for short or something) that was a "Best Of" for some early years, I can't quite remember.-80s/90s are virtually useless, even debut vinyls from major artists. Some of the major exceptions are limited edition releases, EPs, and promotional records. I had a Madonna promotional release that got me like 150 dollars that I bought at Edward McKays.-70's are REALLY, REALLY PICKY. Unless they were fucking huge and the album is a rare find, they're not really expensive.-50's/early60's can be more valuable, but you can also find a lot of shit. Knowing old classics that aren't really commercial hits is a talent you just have to pick up, I can't really explain it. Just look out for them.-Do not ignore the stack of 45s in the corner. Some of them are extremely valuable music from the 40s-60s, but they need to be at least in tact--more often than not they're going to be in bad shape.-Price stickers. If you're at one of those places that just recycles large quantities of pre-priced vinyls, then you're not finding gold. Occasionally you can barter a 20 dollar sticker lower and sell it for 50 on the internet, but these kinds of places are meant more for collectors who do so only to have the music and love it.

dear vinylbandithow much to you love The Gossip?dont really care,me
2/19/2010 12:17:05 AM
no clue on a self-contained turntable...i've never seen anything other than the crosley stuff and cheaper variants at big lots, etc.the question on vinyl value was handled already...i don't buy things i don't like unless they're really bizarre, and even those aren't valuable in a monetary sensei love the gossip, though i'm not sure how i feel about music for men. it's a good record but it's too slick. ]
2/19/2010 2:57:59 AM

2/19/2010 11:12:43 PM
Do you expect copyright laws to change in the near future? Will piracy continue to be a bane to industries whose products can be cheaply and ubiquitously distributed?
2/19/2010 11:20:03 PM
bands don't give a shit, because most bands don't make money on records anywaypiracy only truly hurts the record company and the record storeand current distribution methods make a traditional record company more and more useless every dayit does make me worry for badass shops like schoolkids and cd alley, though ]
2/19/2010 11:21:57 PM
could you suggest a frou frou song? I think i like her voice or style but haven't run across a song of hers i like
2/19/2010 11:30:07 PM
is there a better album than Boston's self-titled album?alsowhat's your favorite album cover art?
2/19/2010 11:33:29 PM
frou frou is a band, not a personthey only have 13 songsbut the girl singing is imogen heap, who has a fruitful solo careerunfortunately, i've never heard a song of hers i enjoy"hide and seek" is tolerable, but only because it makes me think of the OC and the associated "dear sister" sketch----^ i can probably name at least 100 albums that are better than boston...which isn't to say i don't like itthe cover art question is too hard to answer...but for starters, i've always liked the kink kontroversy ]
