I've been looking to try something dessert-ish in the crockpot...I might have to give this a shot
10/25/2011 12:50:42 PM
wtf is baking mix?
10/25/2011 12:56:30 PM
baking mix = atleast that's what I remember my grandma using as "baking mix" i'm sure there are others that aren't Bisquick]
10/25/2011 1:08:47 PM
I have to admit I've never had Bisquick in my life. My mom was a hippie and made stuff like pancakes from scratch.
10/25/2011 1:14:54 PM
I dont think I've really used it much for pancakes, just as a baking mix
10/25/2011 1:16:46 PM
I'm guessing it's just flour, baking powder, and baking soda? Maybe some salt?
10/25/2011 1:19:29 PM
Think I'd prefer a more graham cracker type crust with that anyway
10/25/2011 1:42:08 PM
My mom makes this dope oatmeal crumble topping for her cobblers. I need to hit her up for the recipe.
10/25/2011 1:51:25 PM
should I flip the roast in the crock-pot or just leave it? And when I should I add the red potatoes, carrots, and celery? Or does it even matter?
10/25/2011 3:12:28 PM
I usually put those sorts of vegetables in at the beginning. Stuff like cabbage I'll wait to put in. And I don't bother with flipping the meat though that doesn't mean you shouldn't
10/25/2011 3:14:02 PM
bisquick has shittons of shortening in addition to those ingredients, and it's loaded with trans-fat as a result
10/25/2011 3:14:16 PM
Cool, I'll go put in the veggies now then. 5 hours should be plenty of time. Should I buy cooking bags? I guess it could help with clean up, but its not like it makes a huge mess anyway.
10/25/2011 3:17:04 PM
I don't bother with cooking bags. It's not that hard to rinse out the ceramic once done.
10/25/2011 3:18:02 PM
thanks!
10/25/2011 3:20:07 PM
I just got stuff to make the pumpkin turkey chili on the last page. Except I'm actually using chicken.
10/25/2011 3:33:49 PM
I feel like there should be a bit of cinnamon and/or nutmeg added to that as well...
10/25/2011 7:12:40 PM
10/25/2011 7:40:37 PM
Ah I was looking at the link on the previous page, just found the recipe on page 7
10/25/2011 8:03:41 PM
I'm confused. The recipe you linked didn't have cinnamon. So did you make the one you linked, or the one on p. 7?
10/25/2011 9:27:22 PM
Woops...i definitely made the one on page 7. My bad.

12/19/2011 8:30:52 AM
12/19/2011 9:09:31 AM
^just use chopped shallots instead of onions and you won't have that issue
12/19/2011 9:33:10 AM
oh yeah? thanks for the tip!
12/19/2011 10:10:19 AM
Bisquick: We sell an inferior product with 4 ingredients and 4x markup.
12/19/2011 11:50:11 AM
i've only ever made pumpkin turkey chili in the crockpot and it's deelishus
12/19/2011 1:09:22 PM
^did you use the exact recipe i quoted? i'm going to make this tonight (with some mods)
12/19/2011 1:16:59 PM
oh, and do you cook the veggies before crock-potting?
12/19/2011 1:22:31 PM
uh yeah, considering i'm the one that posted that recipe in here initially yes that's the recipe i always use. and the only thing i cook before putting everything in the crockpot is the turkey ]
12/19/2011 1:32:51 PM
haha well i guess that makes sense!
12/19/2011 1:37:07 PM
i don't cook the onions and peppers first because i don't want them to be mushy at the end. in fact, if you're cooking on Low for 8hrs and want the veggies to stay slightly crunchy (or just not mushy), i would suggest waiting an hour or two before adding them
12/19/2011 1:41:11 PM
I'm probably going to use my stick blender to puree this down pretty good anyway.
12/19/2011 1:48:49 PM
now i'm resisting the urge to make crockpot pumpkin turkey chili tonight thanks buddy!
12/19/2011 1:49:22 PM
don't resist... let it happen.

Any good crock pot recommendations? Considering buying one for the gf as one of her Christmas presents.
12/19/2011 2:06:49 PM
There is an awesome commercial for a crockpot with a lid that latches on such that it wont spill in a car. Totally convinced me to buy that brand. But I don't need a new crockpot, so I won't be buying it. That said, only get your gf a crockpot if she's okay with "appliances" as gifts. Many are not. This is the spill proof version with the awesome commercial: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=16499773This is what I have, and it works just fine. I would like to have more control over the timing options, but that's been my only complaint thus far: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=18067536[Edited on December 19, 2011 at 2:10 PM. definitely go for the big one, i think it's 6qt instead of 4qt. that way your chilis and soups and stuff can be big batches, perfect for freezing leftovers
12/19/2011 2:12:05 PM
My boyfriend got me a triple crock pot as one of my gifts last Christmas. He got a lot of BJs for that one.
12/19/2011 2:13:14 PM
oh god don't say thati gave my mom one for her birthday and now i'm all skeeved out for some weird reason
12/19/2011 2:14:30 PM
12/19/2011 2:15:40 PM
upon further inspection, it was not a crockpot. it was a roaster oven.no more skeeves. carry on!
12/19/2011 2:22:44 PM
the pumpkin chili is in my dutch oven
12/19/2011 5:18:33 PM
