i shot some clay pigeons the other day...FRAGILE AS EGGS
3/4/2008 1:05:22 PM
gunbroker.com and auctionarms.com have tons of barrels, ebay wont sell anything that is pressure bearing or fire control. mossberg barrels shouldnt cost much
3/4/2008 6:33:33 PM
Finally got myself a couple handgun purchase permits.
3/4/2008 6:52:53 PM
what kind of grouping should i have at 7 yards? what is considered "good"
3/4/2008 8:15:31 PM
6" would be great if you are starting out.
3/4/2008 8:33:30 PM
im left eye dominant, so im used to shooting long guns with the wrong eye. I tried shooting with my right eye closed but when i just left it open and aimed with my dominant eye all my groupings were under 6". Ive noticed that i tend to lean to my right so im trying to open up my stance to fix that. What are some good guns to try for a beginner? [Edited on March 4, 2008 at 8:44 PM. Reason : .]
3/4/2008 8:41:57 PM
If you're left eye dominant then use your left eye to aim.Good guns to try...-A striker fired gun like Glocks, S&W M&P, Springfield XD. Try 9mm first.-A DA/SA semiauto like a Sig, CZ, H&K-A double action 38 special/357 mag-A single action such as 1911s or Browning Hi Power. If you shot one of each style then you'd have a pretty good taste of the overall handgun market.[Edited on March 4, 2008 at 8:59 PM. yeah, i was always using my left eye to aim. but since i was so used to having to close my left eye to shoot a long gun right handed i started out closing my right eye to aim with my left eye. when i just left my right eye open i did better. i used a ruger 22/45

3/4/2008 9:27:25 PM
28" is the most common, but many who shoot trap a lot like longer barrels. Most people use cylinder, skeet, or improved cylinder for skeet shooting.Improved cylinder, modified, or even improved modified and full for trap.Have you thought about getting a second shotgun?A new mossberg 500 barrel with 3 chokes will be $140 after shipping.http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=742385&t=11082005OR you could spend an extra $100-120 and get a whole new Mossberg 500.Heck, you could get a Maverick for ~$200[Edited on March 4, 2008 at 11:32 PM. got my grouping under 3" at 7yds - 10yds with the Ruger 22/45 so tried out a 9mm. Shooting the Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm I kept shooting low and left. When i pulled my finger off the trigger some my grouping moved back up and to the right. at 7yds and 10 yds I was getting about 6" grouping but they were back to where I was aiming.
3/5/2008 8:21:01 PM
Well, ordered my GP100 in 6" stainless. I'm $569 lighter now.
3/5/2008 8:31:46 PM
^^http://home.earthlink.net/~potomac008/Pistol%20Wheel.htm^Shit, is that how much a GP costs now?I got my stainless 6" GP-100 for $300, like new with only 12 rounds fired...my friend needed some cash. You should get Wolff hammer strut and trigger return springs. The lightest ones usually aren't reliable, but any of the other lighter ones will make the trigger real nice.[Edited on March 5, 2008 at 10:40 PM. Reason : ]
3/5/2008 10:39:00 PM
just got a new glock 19 today
3/5/2008 10:51:41 PM
Have they changed anything on new Glocks compared to the gen 3?
3/5/2008 11:12:31 PM
i havent heard of a new gen being out to market yet, i know mine is a 3rd gen.........
3/6/2008 12:19:57 AM
oh.I had heard something about some changes in at least a couple of models so I didn't know if they had a 4th gen out.
3/6/2008 1:49:43 AM
i know there were some rumors, but i think they were unfoundedi do know that there will be some single stack glocks coming out ~ this summer
3/6/2008 8:50:20 AM
ive heard that too, but wasnt sure whether or not to believe it. if so i may just have to get a single stack to go with my g26
3/6/2008 9:34:05 PM
Yeah, GP100s aren't cheap. From what I hear, they are some of the strongest, most accurate, and reliable .357s out there. I can't wait for it to get in, probably Monday or Tuesday.
3/6/2008 10:01:34 PM
They're definately built like tanks. They'll handle a steady diet of full power 357, more so than a S&W 686.Of course...the S&W trigger/action will always be nicer. You can make a Ruger smooth and light, but you can't change the inherent goemetry.
3/6/2008 10:48:44 PM
ok so this is the deal.ive got a springfield armory ultra compact 1911 .45got it with one factory clip, one colt clip, and i went out on the limb and bought the chip mccormick 10 rounder. this was couple years ago.now the 10 rounder jams, its suppose to be guaranteed not to, but screw all that.my problem is this, the factory clip doesnt jam, but when the round is done, the slide doesnt stay locked back like its suppose to.and the colt clip is starting to jam, im thinking the spring is weak because it doesnt eject the cartridge in time.so how can i fix the slide problem? when we bought the gun it was barely used. i clean it pretty good after we shoot a lot of rounds through it and also oil it up.
3/6/2008 11:48:56 PM
You should get replacement springs for your magazines.Weak springs are most likely the cause of all those problems. Also, make sure you clean the mags too and don't over lubricate them. Hell, don't lube the mags at all. Oil in the mags tends to attract carbon and unburnt powder. To clean the inside of the mags I'll put an oiled patch over a nylon bore brush. As far as the McCormick...I have one and it was the most finicky of all of mine. I own Novak's/ACT, Kimber, Wilson Combat 47D, and that McCormick. The follower sucks in the McCormick. Mine has stovepiped live rounds on the last round because of the crappy follower.Tripp Research makes replacement followers and springs for 10 round mag bodies. You could get those.Couple questions:-Is the factory mag the only one that won't lock the slide back?-When you say the Colt mag doesn't "eject" the cartridge in time, do you mean it doesn't push the next round up fast enough for the slide to catch it? Or do you mean the empty cases aren't ejecting?[Edited on March 7, 2008 at 12:30 AM. Reason : ]
3/7/2008 12:29:06 AM
on the S-A.com website, they have replacement mags. 7 and 10 rounds.. i was interested in those.from what i can remember the factory clip wdoesnt lock the slide back. i want to say the colt locks the slide. i gotta take it back out and check the gun out againthe colt clip: after i shoot a round, the cartridge ejects, but not fast enough because the slide catches it on its way to load the next round. i dont remember if it does it with all the rounds in the colt.[Edited on March 7, 2008 at 7:30 AM. man, my sig is so boring. no problems or nothin.what is the general consensus on using militec grease on the slide rails? i''ve got some left over from another project and was wondering if it really did reduce wear?i currently use synthetic oil on the rails.

Went out to Range One today in Lillington. I couldnt believe it when I got there and saw what this guy was shooting. Everyone in this thread SHOULD know what this picture is of, but if you dont, it's a Barrett 50cal. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. I mean it rattled my teeth. Fucking unreal. Here's me shooting my WWII, 7mm Mauser [Edited on March 8, 2008 at 6:06 PM. Reason : .]

So its open again? Sweet.I'm calling in for Wednesday.

3/9/2008 9:14:19 AM
how much is a booth/range time there? never been, seems kinda far.
3/9/2008 10:46:09 AM
Non-member range fee is $15 for use of the range all day. If you use one of the two bays, it is $5 / hour. The advantage of the bays is that you're not restricted to one lane of fire. Anything pointed in the right direction is acceptable, allowing you to practice drawing and shooting while moving off the X.
3/9/2008 10:49:34 AM
so in addition to the $15 it's $5 every hour. cool. working on my draw is very important right now.
3/9/2008 10:50:59 AM
So for three hours: two of range time and one of bay time, you're looking at $20.That really isn't bad.
3/9/2008 11:18:10 AM
no it isn't. that's pretty damned good. I need a lot of time to work on a consistent draw. Practicing with snap caps at home in the mirror sucks for real life anything. I need the loud noises.
3/9/2008 11:24:13 AM
Don't underestimate the value of practicing at home. Learning that muscle memory at the range is a waste of ammunition, time, and money. However, you're right, you can't replicate the bang. The great thing about Range 1 is that, as a member, you can reserve it any time during the week and shoot in the bays after dark. There are few places that will let you practice that.
3/9/2008 11:51:11 AM
How long is their range?
3/9/2008 12:28:21 PM
^ Pistol range is up to 25 yards and then they have a separate course for "plinking." The rifle portion extends for 100 yards. The guy that runs the place is real nice too. And for 15 bucks to have a 100 yard range to shoot at aint bad at all.
3/9/2008 12:53:31 PM
3/9/2008 8:33:07 PM
^thanks for the advice
3/12/2008 11:01:44 AM
No problem. With 1911 details about failures are extremely important. The guns are so finicky that one problem may appear to have a cause but the real cause could be something completely different.Check the extractor and if it needs to be adjusted then I can tell you how.

Would a Sig 229 ever be comfortable in a IWB holster? Should I just get a OWB?I have ordered a IWB for my P7, b/c it's decently small and thin, but the 229 is crazy big for any concealment.I canceled my order for the smart carry, as I figured it would look funny in my pants/crotch.I might just have to wait 6 mos for a milt sparks or 2 years for the del fatti holsters. The del fatti holsters look a bit better than the sparks (on the internet), but I have no real life world usage. No kydex as it is too hard and that's bad for me.Either way I'm looking at a long time before I ever get to use it.Any other suggestions are welcome.
3/13/2008 1:02:06 AM
I carried a 229 IWB, but it was a little tight. To do it comfortably, you'd have to get a new pair of pants ~2" bigger than your normal size.
3/13/2008 1:13:36 AM
I carry a 228, but I'm a bigger guy. Bigger pants is definitely a good idea.
3/13/2008 6:32:28 AM
Yeah, I guess I'll have to pass on getting all new pants 2" larger.UNLESS... goodwill to the rescue!

Got my GP100 today, it's a great gun. I shot 30 rounds at the gunshop to about 10 yards. After the first couple shots, I was surprised I hit the target at all. The muzzle flash from a .357 is much greater than that of a 9mm automatic, but it could just be the cylinder gap. The operation is great, loads and unloads quickly. The handling is good too, my GP100 shipped with the Hogue rubber monogrips on it. Seems to be something that Ruger is switching to as mine was just manufactured last month.I think I love this gun. Now I only have to get handling down to a reflex. Loading and unloading are the most difficult thing as hand positions have to change so much.
3/13/2008 11:12:07 PM
i gotta say, hogue grips are damn nice
3/14/2008 12:02:09 AM
^ orly? i've been thinking of picking up a set for the 229, but the SHP had just cleaned out lawman's when i was in there last week
3/14/2008 8:20:19 AM
i've got either Hogues or Pacmeyers on most of my handguns...whether it be screw on molded grips for something like a S&W Model 60 or a Ruger MKII, or just slip grips on some of my larger caliber semi autosgood grips on guns are like good socks for running...underrated but important]
3/14/2008 8:22:33 AM
I tried the hogue grips on my 229 in store, it made it harder to pull the pistol out of the concealed holster.i doubt it would be a problem for something on the outside of the pants.http://web.mac.com/timetravelfoundation/The_LAMP/Call_of_the_P7/Entries/2008/1/17_P7_notes.html
