^^^^Pike referred to him as 'that russian prodigy' or somesuch
5/9/2009 2:45:35 PM
They didn't really emphasize the fact that Pike gave the Romulans the defense codes to Earth, although they referenced the brain-worm thing when they brought him back on the Enterprise with the medical team's attention.

in the original series, was Pike captain or admiral, b/c at the end of the movie it sounded like he had been promoted to admiral

^CHANGED TIMELINE

So give up the Federation defense codes, get promoted to admiral. Got it.

When Kirk was trying to see the ice creature I said "Obi Wan?"

admittedly......as a non trek chick, not knowing anything more than "I know these characters b/c I haven't lived under a rock for the past 26 years"....................I went for Zachary Quinto and the whole notion of, "this looks really good; I like sci-fi and I'll be damned if I'm gonna miss this movie"I walked out thinking, "HOLY SHIT!!! that was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"I went to IMAX's 7:00 showing tonight, and I guarantee I will see again at another theatre before it leaves the big screen. That was badass...effects--AWESOME. I was sold and emotionally involved from the very beginning. Fight scenes weren't too long, but weren't too short...they were perfect. Good dialogue with some key one liners and one liner actions (ie, kirk slapping spock on the shoulder) that were perfetto! loved this movie...A+++everyone go see it.[Edited on May 10, 2009 at 12:05 AM. Out of curiosity, does anyone know if Sulu was actually a badass swordsman in the original series?
5/10/2009 1:49:49 AM
I never watched Star Trek and thought the movie was pretty good.

George Takei in real life is a badass swordsman, and he proves it in every project he works on.
5/10/2009 10:22:29 AM
nastoute, that was a question, not a doubt, I'm not that familiar with the original show, and I was just curious if Pike was admiral in the original series
5/10/2009 10:47:16 AM
The answer is I guess both. Pike was original Captain of the Enterprise in the scrapped pilot. He later appeared in the original series with Kirk and Spock as a crippled former Admiral in a wheelchair. So basically the movie just kinda condensed that transition for him.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Pike_(Star_Trek)Actually I guess according to wiki he was promoted to "fleet captain" not Admrial.[Edited on May 10, 2009 at 10:58 AM. According to canon, Pike was the second captain of NCC-1701, after Robert April. Not sure this ever made it into an episode though.

sooo its like LOST now... all the previous star trek storylines never happened because they changed time?opening up the door for many more episodes with this new crew to relive the star trek storyline.I just want my NEXT GENERATION storyline kept in tact somehow
5/10/2009 1:07:15 PM
so they used the term "alternate reality" which to me means that all of the original trek stuff is still there, as well as this new stuff in an alternate timeline. (somehow)

So.............How did Nero's mining ship know where to find Spok after they went through the black hole. It didnt seem like it was the same location where he came through. so he somehow figured out where it would be.And since when do black holes not kill the fuck out of everything going into them? And, um, didn't it show Nero essentially coming out of the black hole when "entering" into the past? Or was that just a "lightning storm" in space........Ice Monsters = unnecessary and gay.Opening fight sequence = freaking amazing

AndyMac with an EPIC WIN
5/10/2009 3:49:28 PM
Yeah, so using the Back to the Future example, in Star Trek now, arguably they could fix the problem and return to their original timeline if they can somehow stop Nero from ever going back in time to begin with.
5/10/2009 4:13:46 PM
They couldn't go forward to stop Nero from traveling back in time, because they are on an alternate branch already. Nero traveled back from branch A, they are ~25 years into branch B, and can't reach branch A. To fix the timeline, they would have to go back to where the split happened and somehow destroy Nero as soon as he arrives in the past.[Edited on May 10, 2009 at 4:19 PM. Reason : [.][.]
5/10/2009 4:18:31 PM
They could go back to before the split and then go forward.
5/10/2009 4:20:24 PM
^^ ahh, very true^ i don't think that would work because going back before the split would not stop the split from happening. Nero would still enter their timeline and cause the shift causing them to still arrive in the alternate time line[Edited on May 10, 2009 at 4:22 PM. Reason : ]

I felt like it was implied that their division was created as a reaction to Kirk, so they weren't in TOS and wouldn't have been anywhere to be found here. And yes, all of TOS, TNG, DS9, and Voyager are wiped from the books. The only thing that remains is Enterprise.Of course, it could very well be that the timeline will operate in the same way. At the end of the day the key players are exactly where they would have been otherwise, so the possibility of the same events occurring is there.Except for anything and everything that happened on - that planet - . And even then it was said that a suitable replacement could be found and perhaps named after the original, so even those events might be preserved in the new continuity. It was fun, saw it at IMAX on Friday. It wasn't a Star Trek episode which some people were wanting, it was an action movie. It was designed to pull in all the casual Star Trek fans from the last 40 years. The rednecks who loved TNG, the dorks who loved DS9, the old folks who just wanted to see Kirk bang some green chicks. It's Star Trek for the masses and minus the preachiness, at least for now.[Edited on May 10, 2009 at 5:35 PM. I hate to break it to ya'll but regardless of whether the timeline still exists there's not going to be any more movies tv shows that continue from the other Trek Shows (I'm sure they'll continue novels or comics or something). You should thank Rick Berman for that not JJ Abrams.

i seem to be in the minority here, but i didn't think it was that gooddon't get me wrong, i ENJOYED it, but things like the 200+ year old corvette and cadets given command of the federation flagship just annoyed me a bit*shrug*
