I've always been a fan of P-Basses above all others...if you can find a used Japanese one you'll be really pleased. With that said, Robert Sledge played an Epi Les Paul bass in Ben Folds Five for years with no problems.

got all of the rest of morbid angel's cd's the other day. i'd definitely been missing out Trey's riffs are monster.probably the most evil music i've ever heard. makes me think of existing in diablo 2. supposedly Trey has an instaGIB sticker on his guitar based on playing Quake lol.]

let's talk amps...Orange AD30Orange Rocker 30 combosomething from Mesa...I've played a couple of them that I liked, but I don't know their amps well enough to really narrow it downor maybe even a Fender Hot-Rod Deluxe (probably the one with the optional upgraded speaker) or Vox AC30any thoughts on or experience with these? I've played a Hot Rod Deluxe, but it's been a while. Anything else I should look at?[Edited on July 4, 2008 at 4:39 AM. Reason : asfdasd][Edited on July 4, 2008 at 4:40 AM. Reason : sadfasdfasd]

Oranges are totally fucking fantastic (the tube models at least, never bothered with the SS).I assume you're looking for a gig amp? All of these would be too loud to use at normal house practice volume...you wouldn't get any breakup in the power tubes before shaking the walls. The new Vox reissues, the AC30CC2s, are crap. The older AC30CC is okay, but the handwired AC15 reissues they are making now sound awesome. If you want an AC30 sound, I recommend the handmade Valvetech Hayseed 30, which can be had for about the same price as the Vox but is made in the US.All of the Hot Rod series Fenders are good amps, and they benefit greatly from a speaker upgrade, be it the factory Jensen upgrade or otherwise. With that said, I think any 1x12 combo, even with a quality speaker, is going to sound boxy at higher volumes.
7/4/2008 6:53:10 PM
see, that's the thing...i want enough horsepower to rock out with a band, even though I'd be playing at home 99% of the time (I have a Peavey Triumph 60w combo right now, so it's not a problem I won't be used to).
7/4/2008 7:40:33 PM
i know i'm behind the curve herebut apparently Martin has started outsourcing some of their models to Mexico.this saddens me greatly.
7/4/2008 8:01:26 PM
i wish i had alot more money, i want to try out a few stoner/doom amps. Some orange and some sunn o)). I know Josh Homme in his kyuss days played through a bass cab to get a deeper, ballsier full bass sound.
7/4/2008 9:46:28 PM
You can do plenty of stuff in that realm without any out of the ordinary equipment, though. It'd be kinda silly to get a special amp for that unless you were REALLY serious about it.
7/4/2008 10:26:06 PM
i've seen a few cheap sunn amp heads on ebay like under $200 shipped, but i'm not spending money on a bass cab fuck that. I think right now my musical tastes are waaaayy too wide to buy anything else outside of a 5150.
7/4/2008 11:42:23 PM
if i was in a band that had more than 2 halves of 2 different songs, i'd probably know what i should invest my money in.
7/4/2008 11:57:49 PM
I just picked up a fender blues junior. My first tube amp.I'm still getting used to it and have a few mods in store for it like adding bias trimand tone control mods. It's the tolex one, not the tweed with the jensen speaker. So far though I like the size and the tone.
7/5/2008 10:14:17 AM
IMO a speaker upgrade will do way more for the sound than a tone stack mod will.
7/5/2008 11:29:57 AM
agreed.but I like to tinker.
7/5/2008 12:23:00 PM
Word.If you really want to tinker, get a Valve Junior. There's enough room on that chassis to triple the power, let alone mess with tone stacks and extra knobs.
7/5/2008 12:46:50 PM
haha..some kid tried to show off to me this wknd because he could play Smooth by SantanaI def sight read that shit almost right first time
7/5/2008 1:53:25 PM
buy my digitech rpx400.
7/5/2008 3:09:33 PM
^6So I did those mods today, but instead of just replacing the components I installedtwo little toggle switches on the panel that would let me select between stock and mod settingsfor both the tone and the bias current. I like the sound of the mod, but can always switch back now without having to pull the rig apart
7/6/2008 6:08:25 PM
just brought this baby home yesterdayi love it.
7/6/2008 6:33:26 PM
i still need an acoustic.also, when it comes to SGs, are the "faded" models slightly lower in quality? seems like I remember that being the case
7/9/2008 10:18:35 AM
the finish isn't as nice, obviously, and they have dot necks and no bindingbut the actual build and component quality is the samethey save money on fancy appointments, but that's about itbtw, i'm considering selling my reverend if anyone's interested:
7/9/2008 1:32:55 PM
^ word. I mean bindings are nice but I dont get that hyped over them and I actually really love dot in lays.Ive seen some used epiphone g400s (the sg clones) for dirt cheap used (like 200) but Im guessing the quality is such that it is worth trying to find a used sg faded even with a professional setup and better pickups? Im trying not to spend TOO much as I wouldnt use be using this guitar for shows etc. at the moment since its not going to be for metal, however I have played long enough to be annoyed by playing poor quality guitars so I dont want something that is not a comfortable play.
7/12/2008 1:25:07 AM
the second guitar i ever owned was a G400 that was made somewhere around 1996...they ran around $400 back then, and now new ones run for about $250i thought that was interesting, and i picked a new one up, and the quality is way down from my G400between then and now there's been an explosion in korean guitar factories, and i think now there are even cheaper options as far as labor goes than there were in the '90swith all that said, like an korean model, it's possible to find a really nice one for a good price if you try out a dozen of them. i still have my G400 and love it, though it has been stripped down to nothing but a Duncan JB in the bridge, one volume knob and a kill switch
7/12/2008 12:20:38 PM
is there any other multi-function pedal you guys would recommend over the GNX4? I like it and all that it does but it's blatantly digital sounding with some effects. looking for something with less of the drum machine/recorder/etc in exchange for better soundsi assume my best bet is probably something not digital, eh?
7/12/2008 12:29:50 PM
well anything that's multi-function is going to be digital, other than perhaps a bbd-based pedal that could do delay and some sort of chorus/flange/pitch vibrato
7/12/2008 12:52:17 PM
^^^ i hear ya. overall i feel that guitar quality has been going down myself (at least in a lot of the models I try out the few times I end up in guitar center). but unfortunately i think the % of people who care about a cheap price is > % of people who want better quality instruments problem is I cant tell from 15mins in a store if it is laziness on the setup that can be fixed fairly easily or just overall craftsmanship being poor.[Edited on July 12, 2008 at 1:37 PM. 7/12/2008 1:17:08 PM
basically what i worry about as far as cheapies go is body resonance and pickup quality
7/12/2008 2:20:33 PM
i guess pickups are something im usually not that worried about as I tend to want to change them haha. not always that great of an attitude since that means I spend more money but meh.The neck is a big one for me. some necks on cheap guitars are just crap to play on
7/12/2008 2:24:03 PM
well i guess what i mean is just checking on microphonics and whatnotyou can always make guitars sound better with pickup upgrades, but if it's totally unusable at mid-gain levels with stock pickups, i don't even bother
7/12/2008 2:27:35 PM
i'm in the market for a looper. atm i'm looking at a boss rc-20xl. trying to get some shoegaze type background loops. it has a reverse function. from what i've played it is pretty decent. i'd like other suggestions in the 200 dollar range.also, I played the new classic players jazzmaster and i really like it. what do you guys think?
7/13/2008 1:19:42 AM
duke,Im telling you man. Get a marshall 1959slp reissue, run it through a 1960B slant cab. using a les paul black beauty with a Boss GT6 effects unit attached. It is awesome! Althought it is very very very powerful. the last gig my band played, I kept the volume knob on 2......it was a small club....100 watt marshall amps dont do well in small clubs!
7/13/2008 2:39:37 AM
selling my rickenbacker, black, brand new, in great shape1300 if anyone is interested. selling because i have a gibson and a ric, and i need to sell one, kind of like my custom shop gibson better.
7/13/2008 5:20:36 AM

7/14/2008 1:54:30 AM
^^ i like that.PS Gibson SG Faded in Worn Brown on ebay for $400 buy it now..thats the lowest price I have seen for a used on on craigslist or ebay in the past 2 weeks. seller has over 100 sales with 100% positive feedback. hmm... probably will go faster than i can decide though
7/14/2008 11:01:22 AM
i meant to mention this earlier...be aware that all SGs are neck heavy. add a decent set of tuners (grover, sperzel) and it gets even worsenot a huge deal, especially if you're not going to use it for shows anyway, but let go of the neck and the headstock will take a serious dive.
7/14/2008 1:06:42 PM
yea ive read that about them :/ I just like the way they look but of course I also know them to sound pretty good.
7/14/2008 2:38:07 PM
yea they are HEAVY HEAVY. i was very surprised the first time i played onebut damn it sounded good
7/14/2008 2:42:50 PM
the problem is that when they first changed the body style on the les paul from the normal LP to the SG, they didn't figure in the weight difference between the slightly thinner slab mahogany body and the thicker-and-mapled-capped body
7/14/2008 2:47:09 PM
right. whenver I get one its going to feel pretty heavy around my neck compared to my paper-thin Ibanez Sabers haha.http://tinyurl.com/6rqyptwish it had better pics[Edited on July 14, 2008 at 3:04 PM. Reason : ]
7/14/2008 2:57:47 PM
nice deal.. if i hadnt spend my stimulus money on an xbox 360 i'd seriously buy it right now
7/14/2008 3:15:04 PM
yea heh, i have some fear that something is going to be wrong with it when I get it like a neck crack which is about the only reason I havent jumped on it. It seems like a great deal though...just gotta convince myself.
7/14/2008 3:20:42 PM
the other thing to note about SGsyou're going to have to switch to those little screw-in leather straplocks, because the strap button is on the back of the guitar and a traditional schaller/dunlop lock will annoyingly poke you in the abdomen all day
7/14/2008 3:27:06 PM
I fell in love with a Martin D-15 todayunfortunately I don't have enough to buy it and my lack of credit is keeping me from financing it right now
7/15/2008 2:04:47 AM
i guess nobody else in here plays a Firebird.

I do!

I played a Robot SG today.Holy fuck, as if SGs aren't headstock-heavy as it is...that thing is fucking ridiculous. ]
7/15/2008 10:49:53 PM
does it work pretty well though?
7/15/2008 10:58:28 PM
7/15/2008 11:07:46 PM
^^ Sure, but so does my hand. It makes the thing a pig, plain and simple.
