actually to clarify, adjusting for Level 1 messages did nothing...or maybe it was in conjunction, but i had to change it for "Messenger - New Messages"

Are you talking about PIN messages, or BlackBerry Messenger messages?

how does a curve handle a media card? just picture/video/etc storage? no contacts/messages on it?

correct. I don't think any BB can store more than media on the card stock. This is why people find their messages suddenly deleted when the memory gets too full. It does seem like someone came out with a program last year to make message storage on the card possible but I don't remember what it is since I've never needed or wanted that. Crackberry would probably be the best place to find out if it still exists though.

You can store apps on a card, too. You just can't run them from a card.

i've been a double BB user for going on 3 years now, and i still have NO idea what a PIN message is. i meant how to alert a new BBM message, and i got it working approximated from your instructions.

Glad you got it working, all a PIN message is is when you edit someone's contact info and there is a field for PIN...when you have someone's PIN and you go to that contact, in addition to being able to call them, email them, MMS them, etc, you also have the option to PIN them. PIN messages are free and independent of your carrier.

that sounds exactly like bbm. just not within the bbm application.

I believe BBM uses up your data quota/count while PIN messages do not. PIN messages don't count against anything AFAIK. They're kind of unnecessary now due to all the messaging abilities, but were once useful for sending messages without a 3rd party app and not using up text messaging. of course with so many messaging apps, unlimited data, and unlimited texting (and the like), texting, google talk, BBM, etc are no issue, thus PIN messaging isn't as important

I've got a 8330 with V4.5.0.160 with verizon. I don't have a tethering plan, but I've always used the BT workaround with *99#. However, I can't now, because my BB won't stay connected to my laptop via BT (they have successfully connected in the past). They will connect for a few seconds then disconnect...

I've googled - no solutions, yet.
I've deleted/repaired multiple times
I've rebooted multiple times

?

yeah on the old monochrome non-color blackberries back in the day they didnt have BB Messenger, but PINs are the same concept, they just predated BB Messenger...but for some reason they have different notification options in your profile, go figure

I'm pretty sure they're both free and independent of your data plan...again they both use the same technology (PIN as opposed to MMS, Email, etc) but maybe I'm showing my "Blackberry age" by referring to PIN messages

^I dunno

technically, to tether, you're supposed to get a plan from your provider. however, there are multiple ways to tether without getting a tethering plan.

PDANet has has a blackberry app for about $30 and offers a free trial. There's also something called tetherberry but it costs 50-60.

I used the free trial for PDANet when it initially came out for the storm and tried out tetherberry when it was in beta. They were both about the same performance-wise so I'd probably go with PDANet since it's cheaper.

if I have a Sprint Blackberry with a SIM card + data plan, can I put that SIM card into a netbook like the Acer Asspire One and somehow get wireless data? I'm thinking I'd need some sort of mini-pci card or something...

Quote :

RIM just bought out some mobile web development company that stopped any and all development for Microsoft. It's the biggest issue bberry has...the OS and web browsing. I'll be interested to see how much better 5.0 is vs. 4.7

per: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/08/19/rim-planning-on-including-full-flash-and-silverlight-support-in-browser/

and

yeah, i saw that... it can't happen fast enough, imo.

also, do these things offer true IMAP support? i've seen tons of conflicting info on that point.

I tend to avoid using the web browser and instead using things like Google Mobile App although I do use the default browser for ESPN and a few other sites

Opera is nice for accessing flash or java sites although its somewhat tedious

BB's main issue is definitely browsing...they were pretty much made for email but they need to do something to improve browsing

^ tried a battery pull?

If you've viewed the call log, it shouldn't be showing up anymore. It seems like there's something that you can do to clear your notifications also but I can't remember for sure now.

^^try going to your messages screen and hitting the blackberry/menu button and going to "Mark Prior Opened" (i think thats what its called) and see if that does the trick

to do this i think you need to highlight the current date (at the top of the message list)...i dont think the Mark Prior Opened option will come up if you just have a message/call highlighted

missed call notifications show up in your messages? I only get vm notifications in my messages. All missed calls go to the Call Log. Is that an older OS thing? I don't remember it but it's been awhile since I was running anything other than a Storm & at least 4.7.

sweet, the new 5.0 OS for the storm has flick scrolling but it lost the tabbed browsing and hitting the camera button is an automatic reset. Works pretty well in place of a battery pull.

I had four storm replacements in 4 weeks before they switched me to the tour.

Now the trackball on the tour is giving me fits.

Maybe I should drop verizon and get an iphone?

haven't had a single problem with my storm since I bought it in march. Keep switching out the tour and maybe they'll give you the Storm 2 in October.

I'll say this...I bought the phone in March as well...no issues until I started using it for work. it would run out of memory, crash randomly, etc., but typed well.

The second didn't click...at all.

The third did the same as the first.

The fourth didn't register some of the letters in landscape mode.

The Tour has been flawless up until the trackball stops working at random times.

yeah, memory was pretty much awful unless you were running one of the leaked OS's and then some of the apps still ate it up until about .151. The new 5.0's are great but still a little buggy(no facebook and most of the apps are a crapshoot and work sporadically) but it's speedy and stable. I've put about 3 squares of sticky notes on the battery door in front of the sim card and the clicking is a lot better. The storm 2 is rumored to be out on Oct 14th and it should be a lot better.
