Devil May Cry no longer a PS3 exclusive

FFXIII exclusivity "under discussion"

If both of these games hit the 360 and the oft-rumored MGS4 does as well, I think I'll just pick the 360 up and skip the PS3.

Probably won't be as good since it will be a port. Those games are being made specifically for the PS3 right now to use the cell, so I'm happy either way. The developers do what they have to do.

I would be very surprised if Final Fantasy XIII makes it to the 360. The main Final Fantasy series has always been exclusive to a single console per generation. MGS, not so much, and probably will be on the 360.

Final Fantasy XI is on the 360, although that's different from the rest of the "main" series.

This shows the progress that has been made on the next Naughty Dog (of Crash Bandicoot / Jak fame) project called Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Looks like they are making a ton of progress.

The creators of the game have also assured that there will be no loading screens, so the gameplay will be continuous."

I would be surprised if the new FF makes it to the 360, but for a completely different reason. A lot of Japanese game developers bypass the MS console since it is pretty much an abissmal failure in Japan. I think that the XBox 360 sold even less units than the GBA in Japan over the holiday season.

If it makes it way there, it will be a port to the system half a year to a year after the PS3 release. Not too unlike the RE4 from GC to PS2. And, of course, the Nintendo console will pick up the quirky offshoot a a FF game.

^Yeah it is weird. I think some look better and some look worse. They have definitely changed the lighting a lot so I believe that may be why. Certain shots are enhanced by the light and some look worse. I think probably the biggest difference can be seen in the tree shot.

you're missing the point. the screenshots are not there to demonstrate artistic merit, they're there to demonstrate the amount of processing power being used in the game. all of the 2007 pics clearly demonstrate far more computing power, so theoretically, assuming that the screenshots were merely bad angles/lighting, the game is progressing well.

^^ The short answer is, no, it does not matter (or it won't matter in any circumstance that the PS3 will ever see). This is because it is a digital signal (either on or off) so either your PS3 will get the signal completely or not at all. So you want to buy the cheapest HDMI cable you can find. The cheapest place on the net is http://monoprice.com/home/index.asp. But if you have to have a cable right now then get the $60 one.

Well I think its safe to say, looking at all the news, that the Australian and Euro launches did not go to Sony's plans.

Oh a brighter note, If I had been in London, I would have gotten a PS3, Sony bribed every at the launch by giving them free cab rides home and a 42 inch hdtv. btw, the guy who was first in line for that, only waited in line for 36 hours

Sony shipped so many units for the European launch that you could preorder one and be guaranteed to get one. I don't know what would motivate anyone to camp out. Maybe they should have shipped 300,000 (360 euro launch) or 325,000 (wii euro launch) instead of 1 million and be guaranteed to sell out.

Also Sony did not bribe anyone. It was completely unannounced and was a surprise for all of the people at the London launch.

Thought this was pretty interesting:

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=osstats

Really shows how powerful the cell is. I really underestimated it. I figured that whole "games are currently only using 15% of the cell's power" thing was just some bs, but now I actually believe it.

I read somewhere that this entire project would be finished in 1 day if everyone with a PS3 ran Folding@home. Pretty amazing.

I still don't know what folding proteins means...

Kinda like how Sony only shipped 52,000 to one country? (can't remember who got that paultry amount) This was Sony's 3rd round of launching (after Japan and America) and they did so later than the other 2 consoles.

And I will go for the obligatory "PS3s are collecting dust in many countries after their launch, which gives them a greater supply for launches in other countries, while Wii is selling out everwhere in the world and they need to spread shipments accordingly." Sorry, had to take the cheap shot .

You misread my statement (possibly poorly worded on my part).

I was saying that one country on the Asian launch only got 52k units. I had originally thought this was Taiwan since I know they got shafted, but I was mistaken.

Japan got something like 80k units? I couldn't find the exactly numbers. For the most important launch, thats insulting. Taiwan actually got 500.

So lets not compare launches when the most important launch was completely fucking tanked.

i would totally buy a 360 if they were reliable...it has some games i'm interested in...but some of them are already being developed for the PS3 (like Saint's Row) and others likely will (Dead Rising). I fail to see why I should spend 400 bucks on a system that's already half a generation behind (720, no HDMI, etc)

As for the wii, it looks cute, but like the gamecube, there just isn't anything worth buying unless you like short party games.

Information about three new exclusive titles from Cellius (the merging between Namco and Sony).

http://paintedover.com/uploads/show.php?loc=0703&f=famitsu1.jpg
Brave Arms
A third person action game where one man takes on an oppressive regime in revolt.

Chain Limit
A spy adventure action game.

Second Season 01
A first person drama/sci-fi action title.

Quote :
"The 3 games represent very different narrative genres (action, survival, investigative)

All 3 are QTE-fests, with all the gameplay involving selecting the available targets on screen and pressing buttons to do different actions to change how the scenes play out"

Translations of the scans:

Quote :
"Brave Arms - Heroic Experience Zero Distance Battle Action
Brave Arms is a 3rd person adventure in which you seemingly have no ranged weapons, so you attack by getting in close and fighting at ultra-close range with context-sensitive attacks. You can see a "guide line" of your enemies' attacks that tells you what they're about to do and if you react with proper timing you can counter it by pressing the Juggle Button at the instant it would hit you. So it's about getting in close, then it becomes a context-sensitive fighter. It sounds quite similar to Cipher Complex, actually.

Chain Lim!t - Target Link Crisis-Solving Adventure
CHAIN LIM!T uses the Target Link system, which is SORT of similar to QTE, but far more advanced. It looks like you use the two sticks; the left stick chooses areas you can interact with in the environment while the right chooses your action. In the middle shot of the first page, the guy is choosing "Bite" and the tape on his girl's pants. But he could choose to throw some other object or combine two other objects or whatever. Not exactly a linear QTE sort of thing. In the airplane engine thing, we're seeing three scenarios. One where it looks like he dodges a falling box that hits the guy holding his legs, one where he messes up and dies, and one where he selects "remove" while targeting his own belt to drop his pants along with the guy holding them. So theoretically, you can choose any option at any target point, giving you 20+ possible actions. So instead of simple QTE multiple choice, you can combine your options in creative ways.

Second - First-Person Realtime Investigation
Second is an investigation/adventure game with multiple game modes. One is exploration, one is shooting, and one is selecting voice responses in realtime, which is very similar to Indigo Prophecy. The modes can happen on top of each other, so you can have gun shooting while choosing voice responses. So in the shooting scene they show, you can either blow the target away with your gun (by physically doing it, not selecting it as an option), or try and negotiate with him by selecting your dialogue. You can always change the camera with the right stick, and the options/voice commands change based on what you're facing."

There has not been any confirmation of where the images originated from (supposedly a leaked Famitsu scan) or that these are being produced by Cellius (although the Project Aces / QTE info seems to imply that). The actual publisher line reads Bandai/Namco Games, and the platform box is empty. More information will probably come out in the next few days.

New information on Game Republic's next PS3 project
Quote :
"Unknown Realms begins in a very bright and beautiful field of pink, purple and yellow flowers. It's in stark contrast from the hero of the game, who's rather dark, to the say the least. Sporting a drab, brown jacket and thin spectacles, he looks more like a librarian than a monster hunter. Either way, he's able to devour the spirits of the monsters he defeats and, in turn, can use them against other monsters. To capture a creature, players have to shake them up enough so that their spirit starts to float out of their body -- then they just need to press L1 to start the capture process. The controller's tilt mechanics come into play here as well, since once an enemy has been weakened enough tilting the controller upward captures it. If you happen to imprison the same monster more than once, you can strengthen its powers even more."

New Ninja Gaiden Sigma Interview
Quote :
"What do you feel your biggest competition is going to be when Sigma comes out the door?
We don't really have any competitors right now. When our game comes out, it's going to be the undisputed king of action games. We have a lot of games behind us that are gonna try to play catch-up, but nothing right in front of us that we could call a competitor. I think that Ninja Gaiden Sigma is gonna set the bar that games that come after are going to be compared to.

Moving along those lines, have you seen Devil May Cry 4? Do you have an opinion on it?
I have seen Devil May Cry 4, but it's basically a totally different philosophy from what we do. If you look at their trailer that they have online, you'll see that none of the enemies attack you. None of the enemies attack whatsoever. That's a game where the enemies only exist to provide a target for all of your combos, and they don't really do anything else. For us, we're a combat-action game; our enemies are alive, they think, they attack you, and if you don't actively defend yourself, you're going to die really quick. So it's a basic difference in philosophy. We're an action game, they're kind of a "let's see how stylishly we can show off these combos and get a high score" kind of thing. So if the people playing think that's stylish, then more power to them."

^That seems to be a theme for this round of systems. A lot of stuff is going mutli system. That is bad for Microsoft because they don't have as many first/second party developers dedicated to 360 (Bungie + ???). Thats bad for Sony because they need as much exclusive content as they can get to try to convince people to buy a $500-600 system. Doesn't really hunt Nintendo so much since they primarily rely on first party releases.

This is mostly good for consumers.

"Capcom responds to fans' rage
Exec makes statement on the official forums after PS3 fans send petition slamming the decision to take Devil May Cry 4 multiplatform.
By Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK
Posted Mar 26, 2007 5:10 am PT

Last week, Capcom joined the latest in a string of announcements from various companies when it said that one of its upcoming games, Devil May Cry 4, would now be going multiplatform.

Devil May Cry 4 is set to be the latest in a growing list of titles which will be appearing on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, after being previously slated as format-exclusive to one or the other.

The result of its announcement may well have taken Capcom by surprise. PlayStation fans chose to hit out at the Osaka, Japan-based company, which has produced such games as Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and the Resident Evil and Breath of Fire franchises. The fans even went as far as setting up an online petition, stating that "the undersigned" would boycott Capcom's products unless it reversed its decision and kept the game exclusive to the PS3.

In response to a thread on the official Capcom forums titled "What are you thinking, Capcom?", the company's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, has said, "We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes."

He continued, "At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying DMC4 to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers." He later locked the thread, stating that it had "run its course, gone off course, rolled down a cliff, hit a cow, and then exploded."

The full petition, available on the Petition Online Web site, reads, "To: Capcom, We (The people that have signed this petition) feel very left out in your decision to make Devil May Cry 4 a Multi-Platform title, and hereby agree to boycott your sale of Capcom affiliated games. This is due to your decision to turn your back on your most faithful gaming company. For years we have enjoyed games, we have reaped the benefits of your committment [sic] to Sony. We find it absolutely demoralizing for not only the gamers, but also Sony itself. We want you to know that will not, and should not stand for your actions, and therefore withold [sic] our option of buying your product."

The petition had, as of press time, received a total of over 7,500 signatures, though with samples including, "This petition is retarded," "This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen," and "I got a big ****," it's hard to gauge how accurate a judge of outrage it is. "

i cannot believe that people actually are pissed like 5 year-olds over this, lol. its not like devil may cry, or any other at-one-time-only-ps-exclusive is becoming exclusive to another system. we all get to play it. in this case, xbox 360 fans are like modest, patient republicans, and ps3 fans are like rowdy and unruly democrats.

oh, and for the record, i think that having an online petiton for DMC is retarded, but the fact that the company responded to it makes capcom even more retarded

Namco Bandai plans PS3 arcade board
Quote :
"Officials from Japanese publisher and arcade manufacturer Namco Bandai have announced that the company is developing a series of new arcade games which will use the Cell microprocessor, according to a new Reuters report.

The new arcade hardware will also use the same Nvidia designed RSX graphics chip as the PlayStation 3, which will make conversions between future arcade titles and the PlayStation 3 relatively easy.

Namco Bandai's Tekken 6, the latest iteration of its popular fighting game series, will be the first game to debut on the new hardware, due out later this year."

IGN: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Review

IGN finally got around to reviewing Oblivion and gave it a 9.2, looks like they did a good job porting it to the PS3.

PlayStation 3 becomes UK's fastest-selling home console
Quote :
"Chart-Track has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that UK consumers snapped up 165,000 PlayStation 3 units in the two days following the console's launch.

That makes PS3 the fastest-selling home console in history, beating the Wii - which shifted 105,000 units during its launch weekend - and Xbox 360, with 70,000 sold"

^ Interesting, didn't know it was doing so well over there.

Pretty cool about Namco too. I'm sure the PS3 will pretty much get whatever titles they come up for arcade.

Yeah man, I bought Oblivion, but I haven't started playing it yet. I'm still getting a lot out of Motorstorm, and honestly, Oblivion intimidates me a little.

^Out of curiosity, doesn't that just mean that all the systems sold out on release (aka as they always do)? Sony just released more over there?

^^ Probably, but that is not the point. Everyone has been saying because no one camped out, the European launch was a failure. However now that numbers are coming out it is obvious that is not true, especially for a non-holiday launch.
