22-11

this was a young team, expectations will be high for next year

on the bright side, lesser teams go 8-20 in their "down" year

They'll bring in 7 McDonald's All-Americans next year, 6 of which will ride the bench for the next 4 years. They'll be a "young team" again, underachieve, and we'll do it all over again.

i still can't buy the NIT argument though...the winner of the NIT still wasn't good enough to make the ncaa's...we need to stop using that as a crutch...any player would choose a tourney bid

^^haha you are such a loser.

http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=430267&page=5 is where you said "Duke will not make the Sweet 16" - but there is nothing in there of me saying they will or you calling a first round collapse.

duke totally choked at the end of the year though, most teams play better as the year progresses, duke was the exact opposite. as long as kansas, texas, florida, and memphis don't lose in the first round...my bracket is still solid...i thought duke would beat vcu, but after that i didn't have too much confidence in them.

That is exactly how UConn was. It was tough to watch I'm sure for you too. Both teams were so young though. I fully expect both of them to be Top 5 teams in 2 years at the latest..

[Edited on March 15, 2007 at 8:53 PM. Reason : duke played A LOT better team defense which won them a lot of games compared to UConn..]

well if they didn't call a foul a punch we woulndt have had to play the worst possible matchup first round. Doesn't really matter to me because losing in the sweet 16 is nothing new and thats most likely what would have happened anyway.

And its just tough being duke and not being great because every other team is going to bring all they got and nobodys gonna ever sleep on you.

This team hasn't been able to make clutch free throws all year and that was clearly the difference. Vcu made about all of em. you simply can't win if you can't knock down late free throws especially when your best shooter is taken out of the game by cheap shots.

either way. paulus was nasty im proud of him today and next year we will have more depth and 1 on 1 threats.

NyM410...i thought about how tough it must have been for you when i watched some uconn games...duke was the best team in the country in certain 5 minute spurts, and then in other 5 minute runs they could lose to meredith college. now i'm pulling for all acc teams minus unc and for general havoc for everyone's bracket

one positive for duke fans...mcroberts had a really good game, but i don't think he'll go pro after missing key free throws in the stretch and losing in the first round...

oh and where the heck did demarcus nelson go for the last half of the season? he had a big layup in the end but fell into the shadows.

he is really fun to watch in person, but i'm not thinking about next year yet...i still have the rest of the tourney, ncsu in the nit, and football season rolling around

It seems like 80% of Duke's passes this year made me nervous, let's hope that gets better next year

Getting the ball to a teammate shouldn't be such a chore

the team played the same pretty much all year. they lost several close games in the regular and didnt learn much from any of them. As soon as i saw it was going to come down to one posession, i got worried.

and wtf was scheyer guarding maynor on the last posession? that was mismatch city

scheyer is a better defender than paulus according to the coaches...and he has more stamina than anyone on the team...duke didn't have a shut down guard this year though. no dockery, wojo, etc.

next year they will have one of the best defensive players in the country, nolan smith (derek smith's son). any team with a quick guard gave duke fits this year [see marquette, unc, uva, vt, gt, and fsu]...nc state was the only team that beat duke this year with slow guards...

i thought the only reason he was on him because they were gonna double him early and get the ball out of his hands but that never happened

it was the typical

-get a big lead
-lose a big lead
-miss fts
-fall apart down the stretch
-other team makes incredible plays down the stretch and executs almost perfect

only difference here is that vcu took cheap shots on duke players during the game every shot they got. paulus might as well be in on the football field. 4 players bloodied today and so many hidden cheap shots.

^If I was a ref, Paulus woulda been ejected.

One where he took a charge that wasn't there and fell on the floor like a little bitch, endagering the other players.

Another time when he was coming down the court and made a decent move to the right of a defender but also put his left arm up and clipped the defender in the face.

And then again when he bumped a player outside of play and tried to start a fight.

I liked Paulus. I thought he was scrappy. But he's really just a nasty little bastard.

Quote :
"Duke Loses Heartbreaker In First Round Of NCAA Tournament

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Despite career highs and a combined 47 points from Greg Paulus and Josh McRoberts, the Duke men's basketball team ended its season with a heartbreaking 79-77 loss to VCU in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament here at the HBSC Arena. Paulus finished with 25 points and McRoberts recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

McRoberts added five blocks and four assists while Paulus tied his career high with five rebounds and added four assists and three steals in a gutsy performance. McRoberts played 40 minutes Paulus, under full-court pressure the entire game, played 38 minutes. No other Blue Devil reached double figures in points.

McRoberts and Paulus become the first pair of teammates to both score 20 points this season, the last time it was done ironically was the first round of last year's tournament when J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams both had 28 points in a first round win over Southern.

The two teams played the first couple minutes even and with the scored tied at five all two minutes in, Duke surged on a 17-4 run to holds its big lead at 22-9 mid way through the first half. VCU then clawed its way back into the game and broght the lead down to three after a 14-6 run and the Blue Devils held a 28-25 advantage 15 minutes in. The two teams combined for 25 points in the last five minutes and after VCU used a 6-0 run to tie the game at 38 all, Paulus hit two free throws with :03 left to give the Blue Devils a 40-38 halftime edge.

VCU quickly tied the game at 40 all before a Paulus triple put Duke back up by three. VCU went on a quick 4-0 run to lead 44-43 before Duke rattled off seven straight to open up a six point lead less than four minutes into the second stanza. VCU pulled back to with a basket twice at 50-48 and 52-50 before Duke used a 9-0 run to push the lead back to double digits at 61-50, hoding VCU scoreless for five and a half minutes. VCU then went on a 18-6 run to take a one point lead at 68-67 with five minutes left. The last few minutes saw the game tied at 70, 72, 74 and 77. VCU was up two points with 16 seconds left when DeMarcus Nelson took a missed free throw the length of the court to tie the game at 77 apiece with just 12 seconds left.

VCU's Eric Maynor hit the game-winning jumper with 1.8 seconds left and a Paulus desperation shot fell just left of the basket at the buzzer for the 79-77 final. Maynor finished with 22 points and eight assists to lead VCU.

For the Blue Devils, it marks the program's first NCAA Tournament first round loss since 1996 and breaks a streak of nine consecutive Sweet 16 appearances, which was the longest streak in the NCAA by seven years and the second-longest in NCAA history.

Duke finishes its season at 22-11."

does duke have a true PG in their recruiting class for next year? because these guys could stay for all four years and never do much better without someone who can actually play PG

^^did you not see paulus break the press for 38 minutes?

nolan smith can play point, but i wouldn't call him a "true" pg. king can handle as well, but not point (more mcroberts like with redick's shot). singler is duke's top recruit and a great post player.

duke's only other MAIN target is a very powerful forward...patterson. duke just needed a third scorer tonight, that's all there is to it.

this guy called it though: http://tinyurl.com/2q9b8w

Duke's offense is one of the ugliest things I have ever seen.

Most of the time it's just paulus dribbling around and taking the worst shot he can.
