eh, there's two schools of thought there. some say let it flex as much as it will, etc... the more flex the better.there is the other school (which i'm a fan of) is to limit suspension travel. there's a few reasons:1. once that spring becomes unseated, that tire isn't doing anything. sure, you've got the unsprung weight of the tire/wheel, but it's really doing nothing. you've lost any down pressure the suspension offers.2. suspension geometry becomes terrible. if you're flexed on a climb like that picture shows, it's just going to bounce BAD from the anti squat. not only will you not get up, parts start breaking. you also get bad axle steer, which is not only annoying for holding a line but causes broken u joints/suspension joints, torn bushings, etc.3. front/rear balance. while one end is working it's ass off, the other isn't doing anything. limiting downtravel (and uptravel) can help force the other end to work, giving an overall more balanced rig.4. sidehilling. if you're flopping the body over like that on every little rock, you're taking a lot of weight off that side. keeping the body more centered give both wheels better traction. roll center plays a big part here too. 5. unloading. when a suspension unloads in off camber or uphill/downhill situations, bad things happen. usually a flop or roll. limiting straps help control that. hell, many people use small winches just to cinch down the front or rear suspension even more for climbs/descents.you'll find that 99% of people who REALLY 4 wheel, all the comp rigs, etc. limit their travel. you have to find a happy medium. flex has become terribely over rated by the mall crawler crowd.downtravel is also better than uptravel. not only does it help you keep the vehicle lower, you're forcing the opposite side tire onto the surface (more traction) vs. just pushing the other side up.this is why i keep telling you to quit hacking away every inch of your fenders and lower your bumpstops. the rear of your truck flexes more than enough.i went through the same thing with my ram, and experimented a lot. the rear flexed its ass off once i did a shackle flip, but the front never would work that well. finally, i wised up and put straps on it. i was rewarded with a much more stable and capable truck. it still had the shortcomings of a leaf sprung suspension and it had terrible weight bias, but it was much much better.do some searching/reading over in the general tech section of pirate4x4. you can read for hours on this exact subject.even if you're of the opinion more flex is always better, that truck is still a poor example of it. it needs taller springs with either a lower or progressive rate and different links.[Edited on October 14, 2007 at 7:34 PM. OK did some calculations, looks like 10.6 to 12.7 MPG. Driving at least 200mi weekly is draining me. Im spending $200-300 monthly on gas.
11/10/2007 3:00:55 PM
Yeah, that shit happened to me when I lived in Wilmington. Thats why I got a Saturn. I was tired of working half a week each month just to pay to go to work.
