remember chris wanted to pursue film before and now he realizes what he missed by not being a part of the industry, the pampering, the gifts, the prestige.

"Artie finds himself, but Christopher's losing his way

Monday, April 24, 2006

WARNING: This column contains major plot spoilers for last night's "Sopranos" episode.

My thought process while watching "Luxury Lounge" went something like this:

"An entire episode about Artie? Did they learn nothing from season four?"

"Hey, maybe they did. This isn't bad."

"Holy (bleep), did Christopher just punch Lauren Bacall in the face?"

Yes, "Luxury Lounge" spent most of its attention on the one character who historically gets less respect (from fans and wiseguys) than Bobby Bacala. Yes, it was fairly slow and quiet. No, it didn't move any of the season's major storylines forward much, if at all.

To put it in Artie's language, the first six episodes of this season were like that buffet at Da Giovanni: one amazing dish after the next, always something to savor and chew on, and to analyze exactly what the ingredients are. An all-Artie episode could have been a pit stop at Arby's for a roast beef, but it was better than that. Not the bountiful feast of the season so far, but a tasty side salad to let the stomach rest before the next course.

"Luxury Lounge" had the same starting point as "Everybody Hurts," one of the low points of the already low season four: Artie gets a crush on the sexy new Vesuvio hostess, she winds up costing him a lot of money and he tries to play tough guy to get revenge. But where "Everybody Hurts" wallowed in what an ineffectual joke Artie was, "Luxury Lounge" worked because it took Tony's oldest friend seriously.

For the first time since the season one finale (which got referenced both with Artie's hunting rifle and Tony's story about Vesuvio being his port in that storm), Artie wasn't just the clown good for nothing but making antipasto. He was the honest man in the dirty town, the guy who struggles trying to do things the right way while his pal Tony is rolling in crooked cash.

Artie's no saint, as evidenced by his yearning for Martina and then the way he dogged her when he realized she was with Benny. But in that scene in bed with Charmaine and the one at the Bing with Tony, you saw a man who had gone past midlife crisis (remember the earring?) and into existential despair. When he tried to beat up the French con man in "Everybody Hurts," he embarrassed himself, but I believed he was able to smack around Benny because this time Artie wasn't scared -- he was enraged. (It helped that, in their previous TV lives, John Ventimiglia played a lot of tough guys and Max Casella played Doogie Howser's sidekick.)

The episode also worked on its own modest level because it fit in with one of the big themes of this season: characters bumping up against the restrictions of the lifestyles they've chosen. Last week, it was Vito fleeing to Gay Heaven (a k a Dartford/Boonton, where he remained unseen last night) to find the happiness he couldn't get as a capo. Last night, it was Artie finally making peace with his fate as the law-abiding grunt in a wiseguy world, letting go of all the complaining and attempted shortcuts, and just trying to rediscover his love of cooking.

Which leads us to that final scene in the kitchen. As movies from "The Godfather" to "Big Night" -- not to mention this very show -- have taught us, there are few activities that are always as cinematic as cooking. The flames, the colors of the ingredients, the steam rising off the pans ... it's always simple and beautiful.

Artie's usual feeling of inadequacy compared to the mobsters paralleled neatly with Christopher's latest Hollywood humiliation. Christopher has always viewed himself as a top-of-the-food-chain kinda guy, but when he got a look at the kind of bling available to movie stars, he realized he was a guppy, not a shark. Basically, Ben Kingsley is to Christopher as Tony is to Artie. Kingsley was a great sport, playing the symbol of Hollywood decadence (his delivery of the f-word on the plane sounded like it had 17 syllables), but he wasn't a patch on Bacall.

Here you had one of the last of the great movie stars, the lady who taught Bogie how to whistle, a woman from the days when Hollywood had dames, and she agrees to do a scene where Christopher hits her in the face to steal her $30,000 gift basket? That, ladies and gentlemen, is a trouper. And could there have been a more perfect target for Christopher's wrath? On the one hand, she symbolizes the kind of classic screen glamour that Chris wants to be a part of; on the other, she's given in to the same ridiculous perks that made him so jealous of Sir Ben.

So of our two characters at a crossroads this week, only Artie seems to have picked a direction. What's Christopher doing? He quit the show biz dream after the Jon Favreau episode in season two, but, like the booze and drugs, it's an itch he keeps needing to scratch. No good can come of this, or of his constant invocation of his "sacrifice" of Adriana, which even Tony had to call him on. If Christopher was willing to storm into the Bing with a gun when he just thought Tony had slept with his fiancée, how is he going to respond after years of stewing over how she got killed because of the boss?

Some other random thoughts:

# RIP, Rusty Millio. After playing Dick Cheney to Little Carmine's Dubya, you didn't have much purpose once Carmine went back to show biz. But did Johnny really accomplish anything here? Rusty may have been a thorn in his side when he went to jail, but Phil's the real threat now.

# I know HBO says it doesn't take product placement money, but how many of you were gripped with an urge to go shopping at the end of the Luxury Lounge scene?

# On the flip side, does HBO have to pay a residual to the Ojibwe every time James Gandolfini says the "Go about in pity" quote?

# Before he started going all Tony Montana with the coke, Chris' punchline streak continued when he told Carlo he and Tony had just been talking about "La Cage Aux Fat."

# Did you spot David Chase in the last scene? He's across the aisle on the plane from the two hitmen. The last time he was on the show, in season two's "Commendatori," he played a Naples native who wasn't impressed with Paulie's attempt to throw around the lingo. Like the shooters, he's apparently flying home from a trip to America.

"Sopranos" and "Ghostbusters" fans may not overlap that much, but I doubt I was the only one who watched Artie yank off that tablecloth and immediately said, "The flowers are still standing!" "

aside from the two very good zingers mentioned already
"Fha-auck"
"Plus we saw Lindasy Lohan, TOTAL piece of ass"
"I'll give it back to the bank before I turn it into a fucken IHOP."
and, of course: "I could bury my cock in those fucking titties"

I wish Artie would have finished Benny like that rabbit, I hate that prick. People say he is losing his mind. All things considered I'm suprised he hasn't gone on an all out killing spree, starting with that Albanian princess.

Hope I'm not the only one who thinks it would be great if the mediocre mid-life crisis cook took down half the mob with his rabbit rifle
