Welcome to our newest member: bdparsley!
If you have HT, then you can run more than one instance to maximize your production. Just be aware that sometimes the 'virtual' CPU has a hard time giving up CPU time to other intensive applications.

have we slipped one position on the team ranking? I thought we were 95, now we're 96?

Yeah, we are 96 now. We are about to be 97 soon as a few of the teams below us are really cranking through the WUs. It will be a battle to stay in the Top 100.

Also, there is a video of Dr. Pande's seminar about the science behind F@H. It's an hour long (60 meg) and it tries not to be too technical.

^Sweet job recruiting! If we could all do that, we could be in the Top 50. Great work!

^ Good work. I agree. We are increasing our user base and production, but some other teams are just doing it at a faster rate. If you look at the overtake section of the stats, we are out producing several teams above us. The other factor may be how the TINKERS have been reevaluated in points. Teams with more AMD machines may notice a bigger increase in points. The other factor is that our #1 foldered Silver..Krakers whatever is taking a nose dive in the stats. Maybe this has to do with the end of the semester. I'm not sure. It's all good, stay the course, you never know when help might be on the way.

If I get in to work early enough tomorrow, I'll install it on 2 other P4 computers here. I have 4 PCs folding right now, one of them is really slow though. My work PC is a 2.8Ghz P4, then I have my wife's 1 Ghz Duron and my 1.2Ghz Athlon all folding right now. Hopefully I'll be able to hijack at least 2 more, and maybe recruit some other people while I'm at it.

Looks like you are moving on up. Good work! Don't forget to use the -forceasm flag for the Intels to maximize your production.

Here is a good FAQ if anyone is interested:

I thought you would want to do "-forcesse" for Intel processors that were P3 era and newer. I'm under the impresson that "-forceasm" was for AMD processors that had trouble with "-forcesse".

From Stanford:
Quote :
"-forceasm
Instruct the core to use SSE/3DNow assembly instructions if possible, even if it has previously made the determination that the machine may not be handling this well.
-forceSSE
On machines with an AMD processor, Core_78 gives priority to 3DNow over SSE -- this overrides that.
-advmethods
Request to be assigned any new Cores or work units. "

To be honest, I'm a bit lost too. Why wouldn't you always use -forceSSE for everything? Maybe it has something to do with SSE2, where -forceasm is needed. I'm checking around to find an answer.

When I used "-forceasm" on my Athlon, it always seemed to use 3Dnow!, so I changed it to "-forcesse" and WUs finished faster Anyone with an P4 box want to see which "force" is better? I'll probably have a Tualatin Celeron up today/tommorrow that I'll check on.

intel doesn't have 3Dnow, so using -forceasm on intel defaults to SSE anyways, all my intels that i run forceasm, it says, Extra SSE boost OK, everytime

although based on just a couple hours of results, by using both the -forceasm & -forcesse tag it seems to improve my intel times by cutting the time in half almost... not sure how accurate that will be on all my PIII machines tho

Technically we are ranked 99, but that includes anonymous teams and google I believe. We are still 97 here http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php?s= but not for long as there are some heavy hitters coming up behind us. Hopefully we can pick up some more CPU's and stay in the top 100 and possibly move up some or stabilize. The new comps should help.

i knew yesterday was going to be good, but i had no idea it was going to be this good
(^although LeGo's stats are pretty nice )

5 WU = 458 pts, that's ~90pts/WU

someone needs to print out like 100 flyers and put them in the computer labs, there has got to be other NCSU students that are folding, just not for our team...

btw, what's up with these 400 frame WU's and these WU's using the 65 core still, seems like i'm getting a lot of them lately

what are the commands to keep slower machines from getting those damn 400 frame WU? I got a p3 machine which has that and its only giving me 128 points for well over 170hrs of work...

seriously, i'm about to delete the queue and work files to see if i can't get reassigned a different WU

edit: sure enough i deleted the work folder and queue.dat file and restarted fah console and it reassigned me a new WU i hope it doesn't count against me when the deadline rolls around

Damn, you guys are hardcore! Those are some great numbers. I would not worry about getting large WU's for P3 machines. They are all weighted accordingly. If you are worried about meeting deadlines, you can config the client with the G@H preference. This will give you timeless GROMACS WU's with out deadlines.

As for the -forceasm vs. -forceSSE, it looks like -forceSSE only works on AMD systems to prevent 3DNow optimizations (I could be wrong here). In reality, these flags are only used if your system crashes, so it will not defualt to turning optimizations off. I think it will say SSE Boost OK even with out a flag until your system has a crash for any reason.
For Intel use -forceasm.
For AMD use -forceSSE.

Kruz, seriously... more than a week for only 128 pts on a system that can average around 300pts a week? sounds like the shaft to me... I'm happy to have my fast machines working on big units, cause they can do it in a much shorter amount of time, but not my p3, or even the p1 I have running...

The user Loopdomain_NCSU is a PIII 650 and here are it's stats running 24/7. They are a bit inflated since it just returned a 240 pt WU. Below that are the stats for the last few weeks, so you can decide how your system compares.

Last 7 Weeks Production
Week Points WUs
05.23.04 235 1
05.16.04 44 1
05.09.04 239 4
05.02.04 128 1
04.25.04 68 2

Hey, that's some great work. I like the enthusiasm. I know EMIII also has a way to make custom skins and banners as well. I've always used the generic logo for our team.

If anyone wants to make some others, I will post them on the website.

well.... the team is falling behind kinda fast. ya think this is happening mostly because of summer and people not running fah? there needs to be an article in the technician or something this fall semester to push this to others who never venture onto tww, let alone the tech talk section

We just moved up a spot to 97! I think a few members have reduced their production for the summer, but we have added some members that have been putting up some great numbers too. As a team, our production has leveled out. It's not that we are doing worse, I think other teams are just expanding faster than we are.

An article in the Technition would be great! LeGo and I have tried TWW ad banner a while back for F@H, but I think we may have only recruited one member. It's hard to say if that was by chance or due to the banner ad.

some ppl like me have 56k at home and the computer is off commision durring summer. But i got summer school right now and *my* computer is still folding, i think other ppl on my team have similar problems, so that explains my teams slackness. I think Lego will beat us out before the fall semester starts

^That's alright. Just do the best you can. If you are finding downtime between uploads, you can always run the G@H preference which ques up WU's and they don't have deadlines.

as you can tell, im not a big computer person since i never post in tech talk, but i think this is a really cool thing to do. i have no clue who we would even need to talk to, but an article in the technician would be awesome especially with those first few slow weeks when fall semester starts.

Actually add one more computer to the 2 I hijacked the other day. Just added another 2.4ghz machine at work.

I am moving at the beginning of July, so 2 of my systems are going to be down (well, three really, but one is so slow I don't count it) for at least a week or two. I will still have 4 running, all over 2ghz, and one of my home machines should be upgraded to a XP 2400+ soon too. Anyway, my numbers will probably go down for a couple weeks but should be back up shortly thereafter.

Yeah, I am moving in a month too, but it's just across town so I shouldn't see too much interuption. The main problem I have no is M$ Word for some reason is using 100% of my CPU. Since I'm trying to finish my thesis, I'm using Word a lot.

tinker time...

also has anyone ever noticed low scores when running two instances on HT (or not on HT) when the two instances are running the same WU (obviously different folder etc... with -local, but same WU number). I don't get credit for either WU when this happens and my numbers drop like mad, ie now...
